Bates Cemetery is a well kept cemetery located on Fitch Farm Road, south of
Route 3 east of the village of Centerville. The following list was recorded
by Margaret Hodnett in 1978 and transcribed by Mary Rhodes in 2005.

From the Files of Margaret Hodnett

The land, now the site of the Bates Cemetery was purchased March 23, 1824 by a group of people who assembled and formed the “Centerville Hume Burying Ground Society”. The following is a copy of excerpts from the minutes of the original record book.

Centerville, March 23, 1824 – At a meeting of the inhabitants of town of Centerville & Hume for the purpose of establishing a site for a burying yard for the benefit of said Society, James Lyon was chosen Chairman and Joel Lyon, clerk. Resolved: That the site should be on North West corner of a lot of land now owned by Wm Weaver. It is likewise agreed by Wm Weaver that the said land (namely) one half acre of land ten rods on the road leading to Higgins Mills and eight rods east should be now and here after for the benefit of said Society for the purpose aforesaid.

Resolved: That the said Society meet the 27th. Inst. For the purpose of chopping and clearing of said ground.

Resolved: That Wm Weaver shall hereafter have use of said ground for pasturing sheep and calves only.

April 27, 1827 - Resolved: That the price for digging graves be one dollar each for all sizes.

April 30, 1828 - Resolved: That those that have not done any work on the burying ground shall pay one dollar per lot. The money to be used in repairing the burying ground.

Resolved: That Daniel Wight, Morris Stickle, Sam Hatch and Wm Weaver be a committee to attend and regulate the funerals. (12 years later a deed to the land was procured)

May 3, 1838 - Resolved: That the clerk and sexton are to sell lots at three dollars each. Terms – pay cash down or give a note.

Resolved: That John Bates stand as Clerk during good behavior.

Amos Bates was the first chosen Sexton, followed by J. W. Cudworth, Sam Crowell, Chilon Stickle, Wm. Crowell, Geo Gilman, Myron Stickle, Benjamin Wight, Orison Bean, M. W. Weaver, Erwin Stickle, Frank Lincoln, John Stapelton, Adelbert Goodrich, Joseph Cudworth, J. D. Cudworth, Giles Bean, Nelson Keyes, Geo Armison, Earl Sawyer, Orvill Hotchkiss, Bert Hamer, Walter Hotchkiss, Albert Watson, Ernest Hotchkiss, Will Gillette. At the present time, LaVern Wolfer is care taker of the cemetery.

The first time the minutes refer to the cemetery as “The Bates Cemetery Association” is June 4, 1921.

A GRAVE STONE under a large pine tree on the Weaver road, in the south part of town, is said to be the first marked grave in the township. The inscription is as follows:

In Memory of M. John Hopkin who died Feb 19th 1813 aged 61 years.

"Behold a tender husband gone
A much loved parent fled
Entered his long eternal home
And numbered with the dead"
