The list below was
transcribed by Mary Rhodes from D.A.R. Record Archives of The
Catherine Schuyler Chapter.
From the D.A.R.
Record:
“This cemetery is located on
Lot 59 in the town of Scio on the town road on the west side of the
river. The southern portion of the lot was owned by W. H. Nickerson
when the 1869 Atlas of Allegany County was published. This is how the
cemetery came to be called by some, the Nickerson Cemetery. There are
only five Nickerson burials in the cemetery and they are not as early
as the Knight graves. Polly, daughter of Silas Knight (son of Joseph)
was the first birth in the town of Scio in 1806. Her death was also
the first death in the town. Since the earliest graves of other known
members of the Knight family are in this cemetery, it seems logical to
believe that Polly, first to die in the township is also buried here.
The grave of Joseph Knight has been marked by Catherine Schuyler
Chapter DAR.
Mrs. Chris Kruger (Muriel
Church) and her mother Mrs. Raymond Church (Ina Sherwood) copied this
cemetery on August 1, 1962. Although it has been recently somewhat
renovated, it is still in rough condition and they reported that it
was somewhat difficult to read many of the markers.”
