SHONGO CEMETERY #28.3
(2 Adjacent Cemeteries make up Shongo Cemetery....)
The following record of the Walden Cemetery was created by Robert Ackerman in June 2006. Mr. Ackerman explains..
"The Walden Cemetery, in Great Lot 27 of the Willing Tract, is purportedly the older of two adjacent cemeteries. The second is called the Jenison, Hawks, Stephens or Peet Cemetery. This
second cemetery is located in Great Lot 28 of said Tract. According to Hazel Shear, Town of Willing Historian in the mid 1900's, an argument occurred back in time which caused a division
between the two cemeteries. Consequently, a wire woven fence was erected to separate the cemeteries. In reviewing the Beer's Atlas Map of 1869, the dividing line is located on the Great
Lot lines of 27 and 28, and also appears to be the property line between L.A. Jenison on the south, and A.W. Stevens (sp) on the north. Field evidence of the Great Lot lines is old trees
and a fence west of NYS Route 19....According to a type-written paper (not dated) by Hazel Shear, "several bodies were taken from the Walden Cemetery and moved to the Stannards Cemetery
about 1890".
