About The Cemetery.......
Woodlawn Cemetery is located at the southern edge of
the Village of Wellsville NY, on Route 19 (South Main Street). It is an
active, well maintained cemetery, governed by a nine member board of
directors. Known as the Farnum Cemetery prior to 1905, it became the
Woodlawn Cemetery at that time. No record of burials exist prior to
1905, except the many old monuments and markers in the cemetery itself.
The cemetery consists of an “old” section, filled with family plots and
old monuments amid tree lined lanes. There are three family vaults and
many old statues and large monuments commemorating the families of the
area.
The oldest burials are found in Section A, the Shingler’s, and the
Sayre’s are found there. Young John Shingler was the first burial in the
cemetery in 1835, his grandfather, Nathan Sayre, a Soldier of the
Revolutionary War, followed John to the grave in 1841.
The newer part of the cemetery holds a mausoleum which was built in the
1930’s. The mausoleum is governed by a separate association.
The 26 acres of the cemetery is the final resting place for over 9,000
people, with room for 6,000 more.

How to read this list........
This is an alphabetic listing of interments in the cemetery. When a
spouse is evident on the marker, the man's first name is in parenthesis
after the woman’s name. It is/was common practice to bury a spouse with
his or her first husband or wife, so in many cases a woman is on a
headstone with the name of her first husband.
After a name, you will see a location expressed in alpha numeric terms.
A3, means the grave is located in Section A of the cemetery, plot 3,
etc. Location markers are not always evident in the
cemetery. Be aware that people in the same location are NOT always
related to each other. Use the accompanying map to explore the cemetery
and help locate graves. |

About the Map......
The Woodlawn Cemetery Association
uses this map to help guide visitors through the cemetery. It is a
section map which relates to the burial plots. It is not an
official "legal" map, rather a guide offered here for your assistance in
finding family.........
