Wallace Hugh Johnson brought the Johnson
line to Bolivar.
Born in East Hamburg, NY on August 27, 1832, he was a descendant of
Captain John Johnson, who came to the United States
from England in
1630
(see:
http://kinnexions.com/kinnexions/johnson/rr01/rr01_496.htm#P11172).
Wallace was educated at Hamburg and Fredonia Academies, and later
learned wagon making. He married Jane Vanderwater
on September 18, 1858
in Hindsdale, NY, and the couple settled in West Randolph, NY. After
serving in the Civil War, Wallace resided briefly in Franklinville, NY.
In 1866, he moved to Bolivar with his wife and their son, Jasper, who
had been born in Machias, NY on September 18, 1859. Their daughter,
Katherine, was born in Bolivar on September 26, 1867.
Shortly after moving to Bolivar, Wallace bought the R.L. Andrus wagon
shop, which he owned and operated until 1887. He then went into
partnership with his son and became a dealer of wagons and carriages.
He
also served as Bolivar town clerk for two terms, and as the census
enumerator.
Wallace died in Bolivar on March 25, 1914, and was buried at Maple Lawn
Cemetery in Bolivar. His wife died on February 16, 1921, and was also
buried at Maple Lawn.
Jasper Johnson, in addition to dealing wagons, had
a shoe business in
Machias. He may have been married to Jennie Akin. He died in Bolivar on
August 29, 1929, and was buried at Maple Lawn.
Katherine Johnson married Harry
Alfred Cudding on January 2, 1885. The
couple lived first in Bolivar, then lived in Rochester, NY; San
Fransisco, CA; Chicago, Ill.; and Buffalo, NY before returning to
Bolivar in 1933. Their son, Harry Wallace Cudding, was born on November
17, 1889 in Chicago.
Harry Alfred died in Bolivar in 1933, and was buried at Maple Lawn.
Katherine died in Bolivar in July 1958 and was buried at Maple Lawn. At
the time of her death, she was the oldest living Bolivar native still
living in Bolivar.
Harry Wallace Cudding, his wife
Augusta Barbara Mischka, and one of
their daughters, Katherine Cudding Loughlin, are
all buried at Maple
Lawn.
The Johnson/Cudding family home at 171 Olive St. in Bolivar was
destroyed by fire in January 1959. No one had lived there since the
death of Katherine Johnson Cudding six months earlier.
