Allegany County Courthouse Open House

Big Success!

by Ron Taylor

Robert Christman, Allegany County Clerk, invited the citizens to come and come they did.

Around 150 people took advantage of a nice sunny Sunday afternoon to visit Belmont and the Courthouse in search of information and see what documents were on file and open to the public.

As the doors swung open at 1:00 pm, over 75 people were there and ready to start their quest for genealogy searches, land title lookups, census, wills and all the great things that make the hobby of family hunt so interesting to many.

Cider and donuts awaited those in need of refreshment and Rob invited his guests to look at all the documents available with only one request, no photos of the documents.  Rob explained that he was the only person who could certify a documents and didn't want any "uncertified" documents out circulating in public domain.

Several key citizens gave up their Sunday afternoon to help guide the researchers from book to book to give them a great experience learning the ropes at the Courthouse.

Below shows some of the crowd as they looked through the archives.

11/11/07 was a great time for guests to look up information at the archives in the Courthouse at Belmont........

Above at left is the racks storing Census and Miscl. documents open to the public....

Land title documents & deeds are always of interest to researchers and are being viewed here...

Guests in the "Wills" look at probated records that are released to the public.

A great time was had by all and Rob is talking of his next open house!!

Thank you Rob, for a great afternoon.
