CYNTHIA F. GRIDLEY

Wellsville – Cynthia F. Gridley, 90, a life long resident of Wellsville, died Tuesday, Jan 19, 1999 at Jones Memorial Hospital.

 

Born Apr 9, 1908, in Wellsville, she was a daughter of Lee and Jessica Fassett.

 

She married Daniel P Gridley on Nov 16, 1935 in Elmira.  He preceded her in death on Oct 26, 1985.

 

Mrs. Gridley was a life long resident of Wellsville, She had graduated form Robert’s Beach, Prep School at Cantonsville, MD in 1926, and from Groucher College at Baltimore, Md in 1930.

 

Mrs. Gridley was an original benefactor to the Jones Memorial Hospital.  She was a descendant of William F. and Gertrude F. Jones after whom the hospital is named.  In 1948, Mrs. Gridley turned over her share and interest in the estate of Gertrude F. Jones to the Village of Wellsville with the stipulation that the new hospital was to be constructed on that same property.  Mrs. Gridley later served a chairman of the hospital board during the 1950’s.

 

She was a charter member of the Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Twig and a member of the Hemlock Twig, the Wellsville Country Club and St. John’s Episcopal Church.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Lee (William) Dibble of Little Genesee and Samantha (Clinton) Gilkey of Wellsville; two grandchildren, Christopher (Mary) Minges of Rochester and Sheila (Kevin) Murphy of Wellsville; and three great grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel P. Gridley Jr. In 1935.

 

Friends may call from 7 to 9 pm today Jan 20, and from 10 to 11 am Thursday Jan 21 at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. Wellsville, where funeral services will begin at 11 am Thursday Rev. Doug Carroll will officiate.

 

Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

 

The family suggests memorials be made to Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corp, Jones Memorial Hospital‘s building fund, or to St. John’s Episcopal Church building fund.
