Wellsville Daily Reporter - April 21, 1882

Death of an Old Settler

Wm Knight died at his home in Scio Tuesday, April 18, aged 80 Years.

Mr. Knight had been a resident of the county longer than any other man in all limits.  His father, Joseph Knight was the first settler in the town of Scio, coming there from Oneida County in 1808.  William was three years old when his father moved to this county, and has always resided upon the farm which his father took up at that time at the mouth of Knight’s Creek.  It is interesting to think of the changes that have come to this section during the residence of this veteran in that one place.  At the time of the Knights first settlement there, Angelica was the nearest Post Office, and Caneadea furnished the nearest grist mill.  At that time this portion of the State was in the county of Genesee.  The first road from Scio to Belmont was cut by Jos. Knight through the woods to enable him to get communication with the outside world.  As far back as 1834 and 1835 William Knight served his town as Supervisor.

Mr. Knight was an honorable citizen and upright man, highly esteemed by all who knew him, and though his death comes in the fullness of years, he will be sincerely mourned. The funeral took place today.
