Lorenzo D. Straite
Lorenzo D. Straite was born in Wellsville, NY, July 3, 1844. He
was the eldest of five children born to William and Sarah Rhinbuls Straite.
He enlisted in June 1862 in the First New York Dragoons Co. E and was three
years in the service. He spent about six months amid the awful hardships of Libby and Andersonville prisons. During his war experiences he had malarial fever which left him a legacy of chills and ague which have troubled him ever since. The bronchitis which he
contracted then has been followed by occasional hemorrhages in his subsequent life. It was one of these hemorrhages which ended his life very suddenly May 16, 1906.
Coming home after the war in 1865 he was married to Emma Green. Of their
children Rose and Ola remained to care for him. In the closing years of his life. After the death of his first wife he was married in August 1881 to Amelia Crandall of Andover, who died five years later. He then lived with his children until August 1893 when he
married Ophelia Lindsley, who survives him.
His health has been poor for many years and the tenure of his life was
uncertain. On the day preceding his death he was caring for his sick daughter all day long, refusing to allow anyone else to do for her anything which he could do himself. At 6 o’clock that night he was driving around town to find a nurse for her, then was by her
bedside again until within an hour of the time when he passed away.
Services were held from his late residence May 18th, conducted by
Rev. L. C. Randolph, D.D. of Alfred. A delegation from the GAR was present and the body was bone to its rest by the Sons of Veterans.
