Original Question:
"Car #30 who are you?"

Below is a picture of a beautiful old coupe that raced at some of the old tracks and is an unidentified driver that help is needed to identify.

If you can help identify this racer, contact the Webmaster or Ford via email: Webmaster    or    Ford Easton  and give us the details so we can share them with everyone.

Del and the 30 car with some of that Lancaster Speedway clay on it

Photo #1 provided by Ford J. Easton

"I have attached a picture of "Our 50's unknown Modified driver and his car". To date no one has been able to ID this driver. Picture was sent to me sometime ago. Picture was taken during the 50's but not sure if he ran in NY or PA or both.  Car # is 30. That has been determined."   Ford Easton

BELOW ARE THE RESULTS:

Car Identified!!!

(From backside of photograph)

The 30 car at Cuba Lake Raceway in the 50s

Photo #2 provided by Larry Woodruff

Email received:

"This picture is of me , Larry Woodruff, taken at Cuba Lake probably in the late 50s. I'm certain it is the same car as in your unknown driver page.  I'm wearing the same helmet that the driver in your picture is wearing!  The driver of this car is Doug Yochum who was one of 3 brothers to race at that time. The other brothers were named Don and Del. The writing is from back of the photo. I am currently the starter at Dunn Tire Raceway Park    (Lancaster)."

UPDATE: 3/28/08

Thank you Larry Woodruff for the second picture of car #30; Also, thank you Larry for stirring up the question about who the driver of the car actually was..... Ron Taylor

From Ford Easton comes a report that he has been in contact with the brothers - Doug & Don - and received a phone call which should put the question of the driver of the car #30 to rest in his original photo:

"I sent the two pictures shown --- to the living brothers that were part of the great 3 that raced together as the 3 "D"s.  A call from one of the brothers, Don, this morning confirmed that the unknown driver is Del Yochum (Dellus Frank Yochum).  Del passed several years ago and doesn't know his picture has been seen by thousands across our land.  Don drove the 31 car, Doug the 3D car and Del the 30 car.  The brothers would sometimes switch the cars they drove to many winner circles back in the 50s and 60s.  Don thinks the picture of our unknown driver and car was taken at Lancaster Speedway when the track was dirt(1959 - 62 or 63)."....Ford Easton.

summary......

Picture #1 supplied by Ford Easton is probably Del Yochum as he raced at the dirt version at Lancaster Raceway between 1959 & 1963.

Picture #2 supplied by Larry Woodruff is possibly a "switch driver" of Doug Yochum driving the #30 car of his brother, Del at Cuba NY Raceway.

Both pictures are of the same car......

For 100% certain, it has been a fun time discussing the question of an unknown of the greatest time in racing, the 50s and 60s including ALLEGANY COUNTY NY's contribution to the sport!  Ron Taylor

Below defintely identifies car #25 which ran in the Perry Raceway, thanks to Keith Day for spotting this proof in column of Andover News archives.

Keith says,

"Ron,
This article is the first year I raced in 1964 and Sonny Drake was my driver for 2 races and then I put Dick Ferrero in the car # 91.  The article shows #25 Don Daniels in the same race giving positive identification of the #25. I hope this confirms and clears up any discrepancies on # 25. Keith."
