Above, Captain Alexander K. Thorp, namesake of this G.A.R. Post.
# 86 - Belfast - Chartered May 14, 1879.
Captain Alexander K. Thorp, Co. F., 1st NY Dragoons. Born 1828; brother of Thomas J. Thorp, Lt. Col. of 85th NYSV and Col. of 1st NY Dragoons; joined at Portage as 2d Lt. Aug.
1862; promoted to Captain Dec. 1862; KIA Sept. 19, 1864 at Winchester, Va.; buried in the Short Tract Cemetery, Granger, NY.
I think this is a piece of Belfast history that should not be forgotten.
The attachment is a photo of Captain Alexander K. Thorp, who the GAR post in Belfast was named after. Alexander K. Thorp was killed at Winchester VA., Sept. 19th 1864. I found
this photo in a civil war era album along with his brothers Thomas J. Thorp and Simeon M. Thorp. Thomas J. Thorp was the Colonel of the lst NY Dragoons and brother Simeon Thorp
was a state senator from Kansas and head of the state education system during the civil war. Simeon was killed by the guerilla Quantrell during his raid on Lawrence KS.
