OIL WELL SHOOTING - 1893

This well was located on the Fritz Lot, part of the original Richardson lease.  It was drilled by John Moran, contractor for the Richburg Discovery Well, during the spring 1882, in the midst of the excitement.  The well was located near the Bolivar-Richburg highway.  Mr. Moran had acquired the lease from Miner & Wellman in 1881.

From Left: Evelyn Moran, Aileen Moran Haely, Raymond B. Moore (later a prominent Bolivar citizen), Evangeline Moran Mooney, John Moran, Jud Olmstead, Martin B. Moore (holding pole and was the shooting contractor), E.G."Midge" Williams (pouring the shot), Geneveive Moran Hogan (half of her face is hidden by the ladder), Philomenia Moran McCarthy (wife of Dennis V. McCarthy), Leo Moore (peering through the ladder), Ermon Moran (behind Philomena), Belle Smith Herrick (behind Philomena's shoulder), and Olive Moran.

The man in the right foreground was a notable field roustabout named "Rattlesnake Pete" Emerson.  Legend has it that to amuse spectators, he would tack a long hand-cut spike into a timber at a height as high as he could reach.  He would then seize a sledge hammer in one hand, and with one mighty stroke, drive the spike fully into the timber.
