 "Near Swains"
These photos were taken on Swain Road / County Rt 24 just south of Swain, NY. As the road has a sharp bend it was called the Horseshoe Bend, as photo #1 is labeled, (taken
looking to the North)
Looking to the South, Photo #2 was taken after high water had washed the bridge out, (year?) Sometime after that the road was changed so the creek is on the opposite side.
I have the originals if you are interested in using them.
The people in photo#1, L-R Gladys Gelser, William H Gelser (my Dad) & Grandmother Gelser of Wiscoy, NY. (taken 1906) Jim Gelser. |

Question asked: Is it Swain or Swains?
| Answer: Grove was once known as Swainsville after originally being Brewer’s
Corners. It eventually was changed to Grove and the hamlet of Swain remained as an honor to it’s early settler Samuel Swain.
This all said, in the 1896 History of Allegany County (Minard) I quote: "The village of Swains is the business center of Grove."
The 1879 History of Allegany County continually mentions "Swain's" in referring to the community. i.e., Swain's Station,
and Swain's as a village.
The current "official" Allegany County Public Works map refers to SWAIN.
You make the choice whether there should or should not be an "s".
Perhaps there is no right or wrong! |
