 Baldwin Block, Main Street, Wellsville,NY
Interesting stories exist regarding the pictures of the Baldwin Block. As you note in the picture above, the sign "Last Call" denotes location of a Fire Sale conducted by Otis & Day
off premises of the actual fire. The fire was in 1901 as Jan Pinney has proven from her database of newsprint articles. "In June 1901 the Otis and Day Hardware Store building
burned. It was at 31-33 North Main Street in I.W. Fassett’s Fireproof Block [the Burrous building – I.W. Fassett built the Block in 1871.] After the fire, Otto Engelder purchased the burned
portion of the Block and rebuilt. This building [the Engelder Block] is next south of Pizza King and has a 1901 date on its front." A picture below (reprint of Remember When from
Wellsville Daily Reporter or Pennysaver) shows the Otis-Day Fire Sale Sign, apparently a little earlier than the top picture. (Jane Pinney is currently President of Thelma
Rogers Genealogical & Historical Society and a contributor to this website.) (For additional information on Charles Day,
