"Remember When" photo from Pennysaver

This building has been gone for many years.  The Fresh Water Ice Company was located on East Madison Street, Wellsville.  History of property to the right of the Madison Street overhead bridge states that it was owned by several of the Fassett family from the 1800s. In 1919 Harry Breckenridge became the owner of the property at which location he manufactured and sold ice under the name Acme Ice Company. The horse barn from Frederick W. Fassett's retail lumber business was converted into the engine room for the ice plant. One of the last of Wellsville's deep water wells is located there.  Following the death of Mr. Breckenridge, his daughter Susan carried on the ice business until it was sold in 1938 to W. Arthur Davis of Bradford, Pennsylvania.  At some point in time, the business name changed from Acme Ice Company to Fresh Water Ice Company.  This little building has been photographed with both names on the signboard.  The building was located just to the left of the current Florist Shop, presently parking spaces.

"Remember when the City Hall and Fire Headquarters stood on the site which is now the intersection of West Madison and North Main Streets? This picture was taken at the height of the fire, April 1, 1954, which gutted the structure and brought about the change in our downtown look. (Schwalb Studio Pic, loaned to Pennysaver by Brown & Stout Insurance Agency).  Shared by Bob Lehman 1968 Saw the Congregational Church of Main Street meet the wrecking ball.  The 8 snapshots which are shown here were from Lewis Swarthout family collection submitted by his daughter, Cindy Swarthout McCraine.
