WHO IS THE MAN?
I received this
1915 Souvenir Badge & Ribbon representing the Portage Bridge Reunion of the 1st NY Dragoons (formerly called the 130th Regiment of Infantry) from a viewer
of my website. With all the interest in Civil War History I (we) are in hopes someone can recognize the Man in the Picture. Organized at Portage and recruited from Allegany,
Livingston, and Wyoming Counties, the 1st Dragoons originally mustered in as an infantry regiment, the 130th Regiment, in September 1862. One year later the
regiment converted to cavalry and officials re-designated the unit as the 1st Dragoons. I personally find the regiment of interest since I had a Great-great-Grandfather who
was a member of Company G made up from Angelica and several Livingston County Towns.
"Thought you might be interested in a photo of a GAR ribbon of the lst N.Y.Dragoons. Also I
thought some of your website readers, might help me identify the soldier on the ribbon." David Stewart Bedford, TX. DStew23318@aol.com |
RESPONSE RECEIVED 7/17/07:The soldier in the picture on the ribbon and badge on the Allegany county usgennet website is James Lemen
from Nunda. He is my great, great grandfather. From his New York State Civil War Record: James Lemen was 47 years old when he enlisted 16 August 1862 at Portage. He was mustered in 3
September 1862 as Capt., Company I, 1st Dragoons. He was mustered out 30 June 1865 as Capt at Clouds Mills, Va. Remarks: Wounded at Trevillian Station, Va, June 11th 1864. Rejoined for
duty Oct 13th 1864. NYS Record Commissioned Captain Nov. 1 1862 with rank from Aug. 16, 1862 Original. He is buried in Nunda and I have several other pictures of him. The picture used
would probably have been taken during the War. My copy is in my great grandmother's album which is stamped on the cover Aug. 23, 1861.
Thank you for posting the picture. If you want any other info on him I would be happy to give you what I have.
