Allentown School

finally will close

Ending 140 years of education

THE ALLENTOWN ALMA MATER AS COMPOSED IN 1911

In the hills of Allegany

By the rippling rills,

Stands our live progressive High School

Sheltered by the Hills.

Short the time we spend in school days,

Long the years to come,

May our hearts keep ever turning

To our old school home.

The melody or tune was taken from the Cornell University Alma Mater and submitted by Ethel Lafferty McCutcheon, a graduate of Cornell and assistant to the principal, John Chassin, at that time.

......and believe it or not we had a girls' basketball team in 1911-12 of which I was one of the players.  There are still a few others still living who played on the team....white middy blouses and navy blue bloomers were the costumes or uniforms.  I don't remember that we played other teams or posed for a year book picture.  I am not sure who coached the team.  We played in the old school building that was located where our Post Office is now.  That building was moved from this site.

----- by Mrs. Kathryn (Kittie) Cleveland.

(We are sorry that this did not get into the "book"....Please insert this and also Howard Palmer's.)
