Biographical Sketch
Dr. Elijah B. Jones
Dr. Jones was born in Plymouth, Vermont, Oct. 4, 1798, whence he removed in the year 1805, with his father's family to Upper Jay, in Essex county. The country was an unbroken forest, above Ausable Forks, and here was spent his boyhood and youth, amidst all the hardships and privations incident to early pioneer life. In boyhood he developed great love of study, and a passoniate proclivity for the medical profession that bordered upon the intuitive. At the age of nineteen he was enabled to enter upon his long coveted career as student of Medicine, with Dr. Seth Clark, of Johnson, Vt., where he remained for three years, at the expiration of which time he came to Plattsburgh and entered the office of Dr. Benj. J. Mooers, the then foremost physician and surgeon of Northern New York, where he graduated in 1822.
Upon preparing to "start out for himself," Dr. Mooers, who had learned to value highly his qualities of character and professional skill, suggested a partnership, which was joyfully accepted, and continued with unbroken confidence and respect for a term of years.
But the fell destroyer consumption brought his promising career to a speedy end. He died in 1832.
P.E. Jones, of whom we present a sketch, was his younger brother.
