Deed

The Last Will and Testament of Andries Lape

Registered the 8th day of July 1800

    In the Name of God, Amen. Since it came to pass according to God's Holy Will that I must pay the wages of sin by death in the course of time as all men must inevitably, I, being of sound mind, have wished the following will and testament to be carried out as my last will. And of course first of all I commit my soul to my Redeemer Jesus, and request that my body after my death be given a Christian burial. Now as to what pertains to the property of my temporal effects, it is my will that all debts and funeral expenses be paid out of it.  (1) I will to my son Thomas Löwe and to my son Jacob Löwe this farm and dwelling in such a way that both brothers share alike wages forever as to ( ) the property of them and their families.  (2) On the other hand Jacob Löwe and Thomas Löwe are to pay ten pounds to each of their brothers and sisters, thus that first of all and to be paid in the first year to my daughter Catharine and to my daughter Anna and to my daughter Maria three months after my death ten pounds are to be paid. In the second year after my death ten pounds are to be paid in the second year to my son Samuel. In the third year to my son George. In the fifth year to my grandson John Rosenberger, and in the sixth year to my daughter Elizabeth ten pounds are to be paid.  (3) It is my will that my two sons Thomas and Jacob Löwe after my death be obligated to give to my wife during her lifetime what she requires for her physical needs and Christian maintenance and care, two cows, along with freedom, a calf with necessary feed.  But if my wife Margareth, whom I leave behind, should desire to live with one of her children, then these Thomas and Jacob Löwe are obligated to give their mother twenty pounds of money with two cows but on the other hand are freed from all other obligations. (4) My son George (junior) is to have lodging, board, and clothing for daily needs from his brother Jacob and the aforementioned George is to help his brother Jacob on the stand, (in the market).  (5) My son Jacob is to maintain my dwelling house as his property, along with the barns. At the same time I will my iron stove to Jacob Löwe.  (6) I will my loom with all the utensils to my son Jacob and also my Bible, Book of Truths, Christian Sermons and all of my books and also my wagon, plow, harrow and farm tools with my horse. Finally, my son Jacob is to have my cows.  To confirm my will I appoint as executor of my will Jacob Kramer, Johannes Silbernagel, and Samuel Löwe and I have sanctioned it with my name and seal. I, being in the best of health, the 16th day of May 1791.
