In the small town of Old Chatham there is a small cemetery containing the graves of:

Edward Lay
Died Nov. 23, 1840
Aged 77 Years, 5 Mo. 20 Days

Patta (Sutherland) Lay
Wife of Edward Lay
Died Aug. 29, 1856

Edward was my GGGGGrandfather and Patta  SUTHERLAND b. 1764 was his wife. Edward was born in Old Lyme, Ct. on 2 Jun 17, 1762, the son of Joseph LAY and Mary DEMMING.  Edward and Patta were married in Old Chatham Feb. 1783 in Chatham County, New York.

They had three children:

i.   John,  b. 16 Mar. 1787, Chatham Co. New York, d. Oct. 1867 in Marion, Wayne Co. New York, burial in Newark Cemetery, Newark, Wayne, Co. New York. Marries 1. Ruth CRANDALL about 1810. Married 2. Lucy Cornwell FOWLER abt. 1853. Lucy is buried next to John and Ezra in Newark Cemetery, Newark, Wayne, New York. I found this information at the Kinderhook Historical Library in 1992 and was totally surprised because my Family home is less than 1/8 mile from the graves and I have played through that area when I was a child taking a short-cut from school to an earlier home.

ii.  Ezra, b. bet. 1788-1790, buried in Newark Cemetery, Newark,  Wayne, New York. There is only one grave stone on Ezra’s grave, but the Superintendent of the cemetery has the information at the office on Murray St. that show all three are buried there.

iii. William S. Lay, b. Sept. 10,1804  in Kinderhook, Columbia Co. New York. Married Elisa RIGHTER 25 Feb. 1835

Old Hoag Tavern located behind trees in upper left corner.
