PROVIDENCE CEMETERY, PLEASANT PLAINS CLASSIFICATION: Community ground. LOCATION: At Pleasant Plains. CONDITION: Well cared for. INSCRIPTIONS: 155 in number. Copied by George S. Van Vliet of Pleasant Plains and published in the Poughkeepsie EAGLE of February 14, 1913. REMARKS: Known as Providence Cemetery. In 1909 Providence Cemetery (which was badly overgrown and neglected) was taken over by a corporation and put in order. The trustees proceeded to make a list of interments as best they could, including the parentage of deceased when known. Many of the old field stones bore only names. In such cases the trustees referred to baptismal and family records for the dates of birth or death. Where the age was given it was subtracted from the date of birth and the birth-date entered on the list. The following list is therefore not an exact copy of the inscriptions on the stones, but it was compiled with great care from original authorities and is to be held as entirely reliable. As published in the Poughkeepsie EAGLE by Mr. Van Vliet the list as arranged chronologically. The editor of the present work has rearranged the entries alphabetically to conform with accompanying list.
