Marriage certificate of John Sutton and Ann Marshall

Whereas John Sutton, son of Benjamin Sutton, late of North Castle in the County of West Chester and Province of New York, declared, and Ann Marshall, Daughter of David Marshall, late of the Township of Greenwich County of Fairfield and Collony of Connecticut, declared. Having declared their Intentions of taking each other in Marriage before several monthly meetings of the People Called Quakers as held at the Purchase and Mamaroneck. According to the good order used amongst them and their proposals of Marriage was allowed by Said meetings. Now these are to certify to whom it may concern that for the full Accomplishing their Said Intention this eithteenth of the second month 1761. They the said John Sutton and Ann Marshall appeared in a Publick meeting of the said People and others at the Purchase aforesaid and this said John Sutton taken the said Ann Marshall by the hand [...] in a Solemn manner openly Declared that he took her the Said Ann Marshall to be his wife promising to be a Loving and Truthfull Husband untill Death should seperate them, and then in the Same Asembly the Said Ann Marshall did in like Manner declare that She took the Said John Sutton to be her Husband Promising to be unto him a Loving and Truthfull Wife untill Death Should Seperate them or words to that Purpose. Moreover, they the Said John Sutton and Ann Now his wife as is further confirmation of their Promises did hereunto sett their hand this day and year above written and we amongst many others being present Subscribe as Witnesses to the Same

Whereas James Dean son of Samuel Dean and Mary Dean his wife of the town of Phillips Burgh in the county of westchester and provance of New York and Phebe Sutton daughter of John Sutton deceased & Ann his widow of Cortland manner of county and provance aforesaid having declared their Intentions of marriage with each other before several Monthly Meetings of the people called Quakers at the Purchase and Shapaqua according to the good order used amongst said people and having consent of parents and nothing appearing to obstruct [...] of by said meeting. Here these are to Certify all Whome it may concern that for the further accomplishment of their said Intentions this 20th day of ye 12th mo. 1781. They the said James Dean and Phebe Sutton appeared at a publick meeting of the said people and others at Shapaqua, and James Deen taking the said Phebe Sutton by the hand did in a Solemn manner openly declare that he took her to be his wife promising through the devine assistance to be unto her a faithfull and loving husband until death should separate them or words to that purpose. And then & there in the said Assembly, the said Phebe Sutton did in like manner, declare that she took the said James Dean to be her Husband, promising to be unto him a faithfull and loving Wife untill death should separate them or words to that Affect and moreover they the said James Dean & Phebe Sutton she according to the custom of marriage assuming the name of the Husband as a further confirmation thereof did then and there to these presents set their hands; and we whose names are hereunto Subscribed being present at the Solemnization of the said Marriage, and Subscription, have as Witnesses thereunto set our hands the day and year above written.

At a Monthly Meeting of Women Friends held at Cornell ye 21 of 7 M 1794 The Representatives haveing their names call'd were all present--Zephaniah Birdsell & Anna Sutton appeared at this MG & renewed their proposels of marriag with each other & nothing appearing to hinder them proceeding their in they are left at liberty to consummute the Same bettwixt this & next Monthly MG. Mary Wright & D[...][...] to have the oversight of thereof & report to next Mg.

Whereas John Sutton, Son of John Sutton deceased and Anna his wife of Bedford, in the County of Westchester and State of New York & Phebe Birdsall Daughter of Zadock Birdsall and Levinah his Wife of the town in the County and State aforesaid have said and declared there Intentions of Marriage with each other before two Meetings of the people Called Quakers held at Cornwall Shapaqua in the County & State aforesaid. According to the said order used amongst them and they having Consent of parents and parties Consent & Nothing appearing to obstruct their said proposals are allowed of by said meeting.

Now these are to Certify all wheme It may Concern that for the full accomplishment of their Intentions this 17th day of Forth Mo. 1793. They the said John Sutton & Phebe Birdsall Appeared In a publick meeting of the said people at Amawalk aforesaid the said John Sutton takeing the said Phebe Birdsall By the hand, did In a Solomn Manner Openly declare that he took the said Phebe Birdsall to be his Wife, promiseing through devine Assistance to be unto her a faithfull & Loveing husband untill Death Sepirate them or words to that Effect. Then and their In the said Assembly the Said Phebe Birdsall did In like manner Openly declare that She took the said John Sutton to be her Husband promiseing through devine Assistance to be Unto him A faithfull & Loveing Wife Untill Death Seperated them or Words to that Import.

& More Over they the said John Sutton and Phebe Birdsall She according to the Custom of Marriage Assuming the Name of her husband as a further Confirmation thereof did then And there to these presents Set their Hands and we Whose names Are hereto Subscribed being present at the Solemnization of said Marriage and Subscription have as Witnesses thereunto set our Hands the day and year above Mention.
