ST. FLORIAN'S CHURCH (POLISH)
BUFFALO, NEW YORK

A new parish was started in the Fall of 1917 to accommodate the increasing number of Polish residents in the Black Rock district. The Rev. Francis Wasik was selected to organize the new parish. He bought a tract of land consisting of twenty-two lots at Hertel Avenue and Sunnyside Street in October, 1917. On this property there was a frame building in which the first Mass was said for the new congregation, September 16, 1917.

The cornerstone of the brick combination school and church was laid in July, 1918, and the first services were held in it February 2, 1919. The school started in the following September.

The Rev. John Smythkowski became pastor in June, 1919, and he completed the rectory in October of the following year.
