VILLAGE INCORPORATION

Clayton was incorporated April 17, 1872, by a vote of the citizens, as provided in an act passed by the State legislature, April 20, 1870. The vote stood 140 form and 51 against, the assumption of corporate honors.

The first election for village officers was held at the Walton House, May 8, 1872, at which the following were elected:
President Elijah McCarn
Trustees S. G. Johnston, William Hawes, and S. D. Johnston
Treasurer Stephen Hill
Collector Charles M. Marshall
Clerk C. H. Ross

1875-76 R. M. Esselstyn
1877 James Hayes, present incumbent.
