SHERIFF'S SALES
By virtue of a writ of Fi.Fa: issued out of the court of common pleas for the
county of Ontario, I have seized and taken the goods and chattels, lands and
tenements of Leander SMITH, together with land,
lying in the town of Williamson, bounded south by the Ridge road, west, east and
north by Daniel POPINO's land. Said land was deeded by Nathan WILLIAMS and Jacob W.
HALLET, Esq. to said SMITH, reference being
had to said deed for a more particular description of the lot and containing one
acre more or less, all of which I shall expose for sale, at Public Vendue on the
14th day of January next, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon, at H.
N. WARRENS Inn in Palmyra.

THE TRIALS
At the Court of General Sessions for the County of Ontario held in the village
of Canandaigua last week, the trial of James LACKY, Isaac
EVERTSON, Chauncey H. COE, Holloway HAYWARD, Hiram HUBBARD, John BUTTERFIELD,
James GANSEN, Asa NOWLEN, Harris SEYMOUR, Henry HOWARD and Moses ROBERTS,
for a conspiracy to kidnap and carry away William MORGAN,
was moved by the District Attorney. The trial of Isaac
EVERTSON was postponed until next term upon proof of the absence of a
material witness. At the suggestion of the court the other defendants were
divided into two classes for trial; and Harris SEYMOUR,
Henry HOWARD, Halloway HAYWARD, Moses ROBERTS and James GANSEN, were
first put upon their trial. After a patient examination of two days and an half,
the cause was submitted to the jury without any remarks from counsel, and the
jury in a short time brought in a verdict of not guilty.
On Saturday, Chauncey H. COE, Hiram HUBBARD and James
LAKEY, were put upon trial. After an examination of one day a verdict of
not guilty was likewise found for them. A notie prosequi was entered as to Asa
NOWLEN.
John BUTTERFIELD was not tried, it is supposed, from a conviction that he
must necessarily be acquitted. Eli BRUCE, David HAIGH,
Orsamus TURNER, and Jared DARROW, of Lockport, were at the same time
indicted for a conspiracy to kidnap William MORGAN.
Orsamus TURNER being at Canandaigua, was arrested and discharged on a
recognizance to appear at the next term of the court to answer the indictment.
He was recognized in the sum of $1000. And two sureties in $500 each. Paul
MOSHER, Cozydon FOX, Edward GEDDINGS, and Ebenezer PERRY, were recognized
to appear as witnesses at the same term.

In Canandaigua, on the 2d inst., Mrs. Mary BROCKLEBANK, widow of the late
Samuel BROCKLEBANK, aged 71 years. — The deceased was one of the first that
emigrated to this county. She removed with her husband from the town of New London, N. H., in March, 1791. Their locomotive was an ox team and sled, their canal and steamboat, the wild Indian's bark canoe, and their point of
destination, the vicinity of Canandaigua, then the emigrants at Oneida, and the inland creeks being swollen by the spring freshet.
Mrs. BROCKLEBANK was left with the friendly Indians, at that place. While there,
Mrs. B. obtained a knowledge of the Indian language, which was of much service to her in after
life. She was here during the last treaty with the Indians in 1791. The Indians were encamped in this vicinity, to the number of 1400 warriors, and
with their imposing numbers, they evinced a disposition to menace the inhabitants.
Mrs. B. shared, to an eminent degree, the qualities of the
heroine, and on the occasion above alluded to, this characteristic was brought into requisition. On one occasion, while many of these fierce
warriors were in her house; one of their number drew his terrible knife, and threatened the life of her then youngest child, (now
Mr. J. B. BROCKLEBANK,) if she did not furnish them with more milk from her dairy: and this after she
had bestowed all. Mrs. B. seized a chair, and with a courage and energy, that
rendered her weapon formidable, soon cleared the room of her dangerous guests.
Mrs. BROCKLEBANK's piety was unostentatious and genuine. While her name
stands associated with the sublimity and grandeur of the primitive forest, — with the ennobling enterprise and industry of the early settlers, and with
all that is rapid and consummate in the improvements of Western new York; a memorial, purer, happier and more enduring than the sentiment of affection,
of the storied muse, may furnish, is hers, — she rests in hope. PASTOR
