FATAL  ACCIDENT -   We are informed that Mr. James Garwood, formerly a resident of this place, met with an accident on Tuesday of last week, by which his life was instantly terminated.
 
It will be remembered that Mr. Garwood, several years since, owned and occupied the premises known as the Poplar Corners farm, a short distance southeast of this village. He was also at one time engaged in the grocery trade in partnership with John McKee. He removed, about ten years ago, to Whitneys's Corners, Allegany county, where he became largely interested in the lumber business.  It was while superintending some work about his saw-mill, assisting, we believe, in the erection of a derrick, that he was struck on the head by a falling chain and killed as above stated.  We believe he was a brother-in-law of Mr. Harris Andrews of this town.

OBITUARY -   In Vine Valley, Yates County, N.Y., December 3, 1876, Dea. Chapin L. Hawley, in the 43rd year of his age.
 
The subject of this sketch was born, and spent all his days within sight of the parental roof. Inheriting a small property, he had, by untiring industry, added thereto until as he said, he was satisfied, and only wanted more wealth that he might thus be able to do more good.  In his business transactions fairness and honesty was ever his motto. Liberal to a fault, he would sometimes run great risks that he might help a friend in need. 
Twelve years ago they were called to part with their baby boy.  God took the child that through him he might lead the father to the Master. And soon Bro. Hawley came to lay his burden of sorrow and sins at Jesus feet. From that day until death it could be said of his Christian life, that his lamp was ever burning and light shining. A man of few words, without ostentation he made his acts to tell plainer than words of the peace and joy and hope within. Soon after his conversion, he, with his companion, united with the Free Baptist Church of Potter, but in a few years they both, with letters, came and joined the Free Baptist Church of Middlesex, NY. Three years ago he was chosen by the church to the office of Deacon. To his Pastor he was a strong tower of counsel, and indeed a friend and brother in whom he could trust. Many times he has lifted a burden of care from the church or its pastor, and when asked, can you afford it, the answer was always the same, God has prospered me and I want to do what I can.  In his family he was a kind and loving husband and father.   Seldom have we seen a happier home. 
In his removal we can say of him that owned of God, loved by the church, honored by the world, successful in life, peaceful and happy in death, he has gone to join the dear ones who have passed on before into the blissful regions of immortality.  A wife and two children survive him. A large company of relatives and friends met to do him honor and to mourn for him. Elder Smith, his pastor, preached a sermon from 1st Corinthians, 15, 26, And we buried him in the hopes of the Resurrection, on the other side he is waiting.

OBITUARY - Announcement is made in our obituary department this week of the death of Thadeus A. LAWRENCE.  He died after a brief illness on Sunday afternoon at the Masseth House, in this village, where he had boarded for several years.

Capt. LAWRENCE has been an active business man, and notwithstanding his advanced aged, retained almost to the last, the physical and mental vigor which had sustained him through a long and eventful life.  He was a native of the city of New York, where he early engaged in trade which he pursued with characteristic energy and varying success for many years, eventually retiring with a handsome fortune, which however, was afterwards mostly lost in some unfortunate investment.  About 30 years ago, he became a resident of Phelps in this county, and engaged quite extensively in merchandising and farming. In 1859 he left Phelps and established himself in Monroe county, where he resided until 1862, when he removed to Canandaigua.  Here he passed his remaining years, pursuing the business of an auctioneer, dealing in real estate and assisting in various business enterprises, in which he became directly or indirectly interested.  He lost his wife several years since, but leaves two sons and four married daughters.  One of the former, Mr. H. Clay LAWRENCE is a resident of this place and the other, Thadeus LAWRENCE, lives in New York.  

The deceased was a member of the Masonic brotherhood and was buried yesterday with Masonic honors - the funeral exercises being held at the Masseth House.

OBITUARY -  Phillip S. VanDenbergh of this village died at Albany on Wednesday last. He has been suffering some time from kidney complaint and hoping to receive some beneficial treatment on Monday of last week when he started for Albany.
Arrived there, the physician who attended him saw that his condition was critical in the extreme, and though everything possible was done for him he died on Wednesday PM. 
 The remains were brought back to this village for interment. Funeral services were held from his residence on Saturday. The deceased was a son of the late Cornelius VanDenbergh, and for several years past had been largely engaged manufacturing grape boxes.  (wife, Charlotte)

On Monday night about twelve o'clock it was discovered that the dwelling house of John Madden, on Bull's Lane, in the village, was on fire.  The prompt and effective work of the fire department quickly extinguished the flames. The damage to the building is estimated at $150, to the furniture $100, both fully covered by insurance.  It will be remembered that the same building suffered a similar injury about a year ago. In both instances the fire originated from the chimney.

Lieut. E. A. Ellis, U. S. A., son of Mr. Albion Ellis, of this village, is expected home on a furlough of a few weeks. He has been stationed for the last three years with the Eighth Regiment, regular cavalry, with headquarters at Fort Clark, Texas.

+  That portrait of James Abraham GARFIELD, in front of the Ku-Klux headquarters up street, would be more readily recognized if the names of Oakes Ames and DeGolyer, were written across its pharisaical forehead. 

+  Mr. L. N. BEEBE will continue to have charge, as principal of Public School No. 11, and the Grieg and Saltonstall st. schools, for the winter term, which is to open Sept. 6th.  All the old force of subordinate teachers is retained, except that Miss MEAD will be succeeded in the Saltonstall st. school by Miss F. E. CRUM, who taught in the main building last term.

+  Last Wednesday afternoon a skeleton was unearthed in the sandpit near the outlet bridge, in this village, by workmen engaged in drawing gravel.  The bones, when discovered, were lying on a board or plank, evidently the bottom of a roughly made coffin, in which the body was encased when buried.  A peculiar circumstance connected with the affair was the finding of five or six dollars in coin with the bones.  The case is enshrouded in mystery. Times, last week. 

+  On Tuesday afternoon, a little daughter of Peter COYNE, residing on Jail street, was drowned by falling into her father's cistern.  The house had been newly painted, and the child (whose age was about three years) had brushed her dress against it, some of the paint adhering to the garment.  She went to the cistern to wash it off, and while reaching down into the water she fell in, head foremost, and life was extinct before two other small children (who witnessed the sad occurrence) could summon assistance.

+The last Naples Record says: Our Honeoye correspondent gave an account of the startling shooting affair at Richmond, last week.  On Thursday, RANDOLPH, the colored man, was arrested on the complaint of PENNELL and brought here for examination, before Esquire GORDON.  The town hall was well filled, so great was the curiosity of our people.  As the shooting was acknowledged and no bail offered, there was nothing to do but to commit the prisoner to jail.  The evidence adduced however, was of that  character to carry the sympathies of the people with RANDOLPH, and in the opinion of most every one, the weight of the trouble so far settled upon the injured party.

The late Dr. DAGGETT, who, for over twenty years, was the beloved pastor of the Congregational church in Canandaigua was the author of the beautiful poem in October Scribner's, entitled, "There is a Natural Body." The occurrence of the author's death, immediately after the transmission of the piece to the press and before its issue to the public, gives a peculiarly striking 
significance to its sentiment of assurance that death does not end all.

DIED  McKECHNIE -  In this village, Sunday January 28th, 1883, Alexander McKechnie, in the 62nd year of his age.  
Death of Alexander McKechnie - On Sunday morning last, after a severe illness of about four weeks duration, Alexander McKechnie passed away. His death was not unexpected, as all hopes of his ultimate recovery had been abandoned for several days.  Mr. McKechnie was 62 years of age, tall and of an imposing personal appearance. 
In the year 1843, in company with his brother James, he commenced brewing in this village. From a small beginning their business has reached colossal proportions, and the firm of J. and A. McKechnie became one of the most successful and wealthy in this part of the state.  A short time since, the brothers McKechnie, also established a banking house in this village, and in addition they owned the majority stock of the Canandaigua Gas and Light Company, a controlling interest in the Lake Navigation Company, and many of the finest blocks in the business portion of this village. 
The residence of Mr. McKechnie is justly regarded as one of  the most elegant in Western New York. Mr. McKechnie was a man of strong individuality, keen business perceptions, and ability, and the most rigid integrity. As a citizen he was public spirited, and his loss will be deeply felt in the community. 
He leaves a wife and six children, four sons, and two daughters.  The funeral services were held from the residence on upper Main Street yesterday forenoon, Revs. S. E. Eastman, and J. H. Lee officiated. At the hour named, and while the obsequies were in progress, the business places on Main Street were closed, as a token of respect, and many of our business men and other residents attended the funeral.  The remains of the deceased were taken to the village cemetery for interment, preceded by nearly 100 employees of the McKechnie brothers, and followed by one of the largest funeral processions ever seen here.

Resolutions on the death of A. McKechnie 
At the regular meeting of the Trustees of the village of Canandaigua, held Friday evening, February 2, 1883, the following
preamble and resolutions were introduced by Mr. Robertson, and unanimously adopted:
 
Whereas, Since the last regular meeting of the Trustees of the village of Canandaigua, Alexander McKechnie, a former member of the Board of Trustees and honored President of this village, has been removed by death. In view of the many good and noble qualities of our distinguished fellow citizen, in his social and business relations, his energetic and enterprising life, his integrity and usefulness.
 
Resolved, That we, the Trustees of the village of Canandaigua, for ourselves and as representing the whole community, sincerely and deeply deplore and mourn his loss, and tender to his bereaved family our warmest sympathy in their affliction. 
Resolved, That as a token of respect and esteem to the memory of the deceased ex President of the village, the chair which he so honorably and acceptably filled be draped in mourning for the period of forty days. 
Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be engrossed and presented to the family of the deceased, and be published in the village papers, and that the same be entered in the records of the village.

Mr. Augustine S. Cooley and Miss Hattie C. Reed were united in wedlock at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. W. Allen Reed, north of this village, Wednesday evening. They have gone east on their bridal tour, and the best wishes and hearty congratulations of many friends follow them.  Mr. Cooley is one of our most worthy and respected young business men, and has chosen wisely and well for his life companion.

On Monday occurred the death of Alexander McKechnie, Jr., son of the late Alexander McKechnie, after only a few days' illness. His age was 25 years. He was a young man of good business ability, and had many friends, who deplore his early death. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, from the home of his afflicted mother.

Captain HERENDEEN has put up a fine residence below Cook's Point, Canandaigua Lake.

James McKECHNIE has just taken possession of his elegant new residence on Main street, Canandaigua.

A child of Albert BARNES of Farmington was scalded to death the other day by falling into a pail of hot water.

The Methodist church, Canandaigua, held a centennial memorial service last Sunday at which pleasing addresses were made by Lucius WILCOX on the original Sunday-schools in New England and his experience as a teacher among the Negroes of Alabama, and by Mrs. Marcia THOMPSON, the oldest original members of the church, whose memory goes back to the founding of the church in 1816. Remarks were also made by the pastor, Rev. M. S. HAUD, and by O. M. SMITH, who was the superintendent 28 years ago.
