JOYCE MOVES STORE TO COACH STREET - 1929
Edward H. Joyce, local grocer, who has operated a store at the corner of South Main and Beeman streets for 16 years, is moving today to new quarters at 26 Coach Street, recently occupied by D. A. Secor, dealer in farm machinery.
The new store has been remodeled and will be opened Monday with a full line of groceries and fresh vegetables, according to Mr. Joyce, who also announces a free parking space in the rear of the building for his patrons.
For eight years Mr. Joyce and Benedict Fuller conducted the grocery in partnership, Mr. Joyce buying out his partner in 1921.

TO ADDRESS DOCTORS

Canandaigua, Jan. 5 - "Orthopedics" will be the subject of an address by Dr. L. A. WHITNEY of Rochester before members of the Ontario County Medical Society at a quarterly meeting at Florence Villa, this city, Tuesday evening. Dr. C. Harvey JEWETT of Clifton Springs, will deliver the annual president's address. The program opens at 5:30 o'clock with a business session, followed by
dinner and the scientific meeting.

 

POST OFFICE RECEIPTS LARGEST IN HISTORY
Canandaigua, Jan. 5 - Canandaigua post office receipts for 1928 were the largest in its history and exceed those of 1927 by $2,220.84, according to announcement made today by Deputy Postmaster John W. NIBLOCK. Total receipts for last year were $53,913.70 as compared with $51,692.86 the preceding year.
Huge volumes of election circulars, letters and the like passing through the office during the campaign last Fall, are largely responsible for the unprecedented increase, Mr. NIBLOCK believes. There was a normal gain of approximately $1,000, he states, due to increased business of local manufacturers.

WOULD EXTEND SERVICE
Canandaigua, Jan. 5 - Action on the application of the White Rapid Transit Bus Line to extend its service from the city limits to a downtown hotel will be taken by the Common Council at its next regular meeting on Jan. 18. Such action has been deferred by the aldermen from time to time over a period of several weeks.

Roy Broomfield of Rochester spent the week end with his mother, Mrs. Henry Broomfield, Sr., of High Street.
On Sunday callers at the Broomfield home were Miss Sara Petty and Bert Petty of Victor, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Ardell of Canandaigua.

William T. Schley was a son of the late Evander Sly of Canandaigua, and was born here in 1841. After a course in the
Canandaigua Academy, he adopted the law as his profession, entering the office of Henry O. Cheeseboro, as a student. 
Following admission to the bar, Mr. Schley engaged here in the practice of law, and then removing to New York City, he entered the office of Hon. George Bliss, distinguished both as a lawyer and politician. Later Mr. Schley entered into partnership with Mr. Bliss under the firm name of Bliss and Schley. 
He married Miss Mary Reeve who was formerly a resident of Canandaigua. He died at his home in Far Hills, New Jersey, July 1, 1912,

SPENGLER – Francis SPENGLER, of Canandaigua, aged 15 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles SPENGLER, former residents of Akron, died of blood poisoning and streptococcus infection at Memorial Hospital.  He leaves two brothers and one sister, Robert, James and Mary. Jeanette SPENGLER.  Funeral to be in Akron tomorrow  (Feb 1929)

Carl A. GIBBS, Superintendent of Poor of Ontario County passed away on Friday, June 21 at Frederick Ferris Thompson Memorial Hospital, following an illness with heart trouble and complications.  Deceased was taken suddenly ill two weeks previous, when he was removed from his residence at the County Home in Hopewell to the hospital.  Mr. GIBBS was born in Hemlock, November 3, 1880, son of Anson A. and Carrie Wheaton GIBBS.  He received his education at Hemlock, Geneseo State Normal school and Rochester Business Institute.  for some years he had served several terms as Town Collector and Justice of the Peace before he was elected to the Board of Supervisors.

In November 1924, Mr. GIBBS was elected to the superintendency of the poor, following nine years service as supervisor from Canadice, having served on various committees. For four years he was chairman of the highways committee and it was largely through his reports the appropriation for the removal of snow was allowed through the winter months.  He was deeply interested in the road from Geneva to Dresden which won for him the confidence of the residents of that vicinity.  He had long been affiliated with the Republican Party.  (rest is cut off)

+  Knopf  -  Monaghan  -    The marriage of Miss Elsie Cecelia Knopf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Knopf, of Canandaigua, and Emmett Monaghan, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Monaghan, took place at St. Mary's church on Saturday morning.  Rev. Michael C. Wall, rector of the church performed the ceremony and sang the nuptial mass.
The bride, who was attended by Miss Mildred Doll of Buffalo, her associate teacher in the Buffalo city schools, wore a gown of white flat crepe with white horsehair braid hat and carried a shower bouquet of bride's roses and gypsophila. Miss Doll wore pink flat crepe with hat of horsehair of the same color and carried a shower bouquet of Killarney roses and gypsophila.   Frederick Monaghan of the United States patent office at Washington, brother of the groom, was best man.
Following the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served at Wenna Kenna tea room to 60 guests, after which Mr. and Mrs. Monaghan left for
a week's trip. Upon their return they will reside on the Monaghan farm on the Centerfield road.
 

+  THE  GRIM  REAPER  - Peter Neenan

Peter Neenan, aged 75 years, of East Bloomfield, died at Memorial Hospital on Monday afternoon following a long illness.  Mr. Neenan had held numerous town offices including that of member of the Board of Supervisors.
Survivors are two sons and two daughters, Robert Neenan of Honeoye Falls, Charles Neenan of Rochester, Miss Clara Neenan of Le Roy, and
Miss Louise Neenan of New York City, also two sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Jane Costello of Penn Yan, Mrs. John McDonough, Thomas, Daniel, Edward and William Neenan, all of East Bloomfield.  The services were held from St. Bridget's church at East Bloomfield this morning. Interment in the Catholic cemetery in that village.

JOHN NORTH WILLYS SAID TO BE SLATED FOR DIPLOMATIC JOB

The career of John North Willys, now very much in the public eye because of his disposal of his very large automobile interests, is outlined in the New York and Chicago newspapers as follows: 

Mr. Willys, born in Canandaigua, N. Y., fifty five years ago, has been president of Willys Overland since he founded the business in 1907. He started out in life as a bicycle repair man in Canandaigua, and later moved to Elmira, N. Y., where he founded the Elmira Arms Company, a sporting goods store. 
For years he was interested in horseless carriages, selling the machine in Elmira.  In 1907, with financial backing, he bought the Overland Automobile Company'y plant on Indianapolis, then on the verge of a financial collapse. Early in 1909 he acquired the old Pope Toledo plant in Toledo, Ohio, and moved his manufacturing headquarters there. 
The Willys Overland Company and the F. B. Stearns Company, controlled by Mr. Willys, have the exclusive American rights to the Knight sleeve valve motor. The company was one of the pioneers in mass automobile production. In addition to its Toledo factory, Willys Overland operates plants in Pontiac, Mich., Elyria, Ohio, Elmira, NY, and Los Angeles. 
Details of the transaction by which Mr. Willys disposed of his large holdings in the Willys Overland companies are not disclosed but it has been estimated that they involve a sum in excess of $20,000,000. It has been reported that Mr. Willys is slated for a diplomatic position and his name has been mentioned in Washington in connection with Spain and Japan, where American embassies are maintained.

The 49th annual reunion of the 50th and 15th regiments of the Engineer Brigade, Army of the Potomac, is to be held in Geneva in August.  The majority of the 3,060 members of the brigade, were recruited in this section.  The annual reunion of the 148th NYS Volunteers will be held at the same time.

+  Edgar G. LOOMIS, aged 77 years, died Tuesday, July 23rd, at Gainsville, Florida, where he had made his home for the past five years.  He was a son of Albert and Caroline LOOMIS and was born in Rushville where he spent his early life.  He was twice married, his first wife being Helen BLODGETT of Rushville.  After her death 52 years ago, he married Harriet THOMPSON of Burdette, NY, who survives him.  He also leaves two sons, Fred LOOMIS of Elmira and Carl LOOMIS of Brooklyn.  Mr. LOOMIS and his family moved  from Rushville to Elmira, where he lived for many years, before going to Florida.  

+  The funeral of Mrs. Sylvia A. CRISS, who died last week Sunday (July 21), was held at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Carl GREEN on Tuesday, July 23rd.  Burial was name in Nettle Valley cemetery (Yates county). 

+  The death of Jacob FOX occurred on Saturday, after a long illness.  Funeral services were held on Monday at the Baptist church, in charge of Rev. Henry SPURDLE, pastor.  Mr. FOX is survived by several children.  His wife died about 10 years ago. 

+  Allen CORNISH, Henry MANAHAN, William SEAMANS and Harold DUELOS are enjoying a fishing trip in Canada.  

+  Mrs. Mary CORWIN, of Troy, is the guest of her sister, Miss Harriette KNAPP. 

+  Mrs. Ralph GEDDES and two children of Rochester, are guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Weld CONLEY.  

+  There was a small attendance at the GAR picnic last Thursday, because  of the hard storm.  A fine dinner and program were carried out in the big skating rink hall at Locust Lodge. 

+  Miss Caroline HOUSEL has returned from an extended visit in Michigan and Canada.

+  Miss Katherine TOBEY is visiting her aunt, Mrs. J. W. THOMAS and family in Palmyra.

+  Miss Dorothy NAGELDINGER of Pittsford is visiting her friend, Margie LYON. 

+  Mr. and Mrs. William JEROME are enjoying a visit from his parents, who live in Honeoye.  

+  Mrs. Sherman EDSON has been quite ill during the past week.

+  Miss Dorothy ARNOLD is visiting relatives in Cleveland, Oh.

+  Mrs. C. H. BARTLETT and two daughters, Dorothy and Ruth of Minneapolis, Minn., are spending the summer with their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. William FITZSIMMONS.  

+  Miss Carrie HUNTER, who teaches in New York city, is at home for the remainder of the vacation.  

+  Mrs. T. B. WILSON accompanied by Mrs. T. E. HICKEY, left for a short stay in Boston, the first of this week.  Mrs. WILSON is going for medical observation. 

+  Mrs. Charles S. WILSON expected to join her husband in Washington this week, Thursday, for a few days stay.  

+  Foundations are being laid for a new house to be built by Mr. and Mrs. Bruce JONES on the Wilson-Jones farm. 

+  Rev. and Mrs. James SYKES and Miss Vera SYKES will visit Miss Ethel SYKES in New York city this week.

+ Mrs. Morris Gifford, Academy Place, entertained at a variety shower on Wednesday in honor of Miss Mabel E. Gifford, North Road, whose marriage to Bert Perika of Rochester is to take place soon. 
+ Mrs. Henry Higgins and daughters, Misses Helen and Dorothy Higgins, North Pearl Street, are spending the week in Chicago. On Saturday they will witness the marriage there of Mrs. Higgins son, Romeyn Higgins, to Miss Louise McMillen, of that city.

DANIEL W. PIERCE

Daniel W. Pierce, aged 77 years, a lifelong resident of Ontario County died at his home in Phoenix Street this morning following a several years illness. He was born in Bristol and had resided there 27 years.  His wife, Madeline Rogers of Michigan, died four years ago. 
Deceased leaves three sons and two daughters, Perry R. Pierce, Roy C. and William C. Pierce, Miss Lena B. Pierce and Mrs. Lulu P. Farnsworth all of this city.  Five brothers, Leighton, George and Melvin of Canandaigua, James Pierce of Bristol, and Benton Pierce of Reed Corners.  Eight grand children and one great-granddaughter.  Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Daniel W. Pierce, aged 77 years, a lifelong resident of Ontario County, died at his home in Phoenix Street, Thursday following a several years' illness.  He was born in Bristol and had resided here 27 years. His wife Madeline Rigers, a native of Michigan, died four years ago.
He leaves three sons and two daughters, Perry R. Pierce, Roy C., and William C. Pierce, Miss Lena B. Pierce and Mrs. Lulu  P. Farnsworth, all of this city, five brothers, Leighton, George and Melvin Pierce of Bristol, and Benton Pierce of Reed Corners, also eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Funeral services were held at Woodlawn chapel, Saturday afternoon.

MARRIAGES -    GIFFORD - PORRECA
Miss Mabel E. Gifford, daughter of Mrs. Charles Gifford of this city, and Humbert C. Porreca, son of Mrs. Anna Porreca of Rochester,
were married Saturday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Gifford, on the North road. Rev. Stephen S. Pratt of the Methodist
church, performed the ceremony in the presence of 26 relatives and friends.
The bride was attended by Mrs. Ray J. Plant of Rochester and Victor E. Porreca, brother of the groom, was best man.
After a motor trip Mr. and Mrs. Porreca will reside at 756 Genessee Park Boulevard, Rochester. He is superintendent of the Cunningham Hall Aircraft corporation.

 STANTON  WEBSTER  SLIGHTLY  IMPROVED
 
Stanton Webster, son of Mrs. Harry Pimm, Chapin Street, who received a broken rib, and serious injuries to his back and chest in an automobile accident on the east lake road on Saturday night, was reported as slightly improved yesterday. He is at the Frederick Ferris Thompson Hospital. The car in which he was riding was crowded off the road by a passing machine, hitting the rough shoulder, turned completely over and crashed into a tree. The driver, Robert Case, Main Street north, escaped with minor bruises.

TAKE AEROPLANE FLIGHT TO BOSTON
 
Eleanor T. Collins Became Bride of John J. Long, Jr.  On Novel Honeymoon
 
The marriage of Miss Eleanor Collins, daughter of Mrs. E. C. Collins, West Gibson Street, and John J. Long, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Long, Prospect Street, took place at St. Mary's Church on Tuesday morning. Rev. Michael C. Wall performed the ceremony in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives. 
The bride was gowned in white taffeta, cut bouffant style, with veil caught about the head with a wreath of orange blossoms. Her shower bouquet was of white roses and an additional touch to her costume, was a century old pin of seed pearls, worn by four other Canandaigua brides.
 Miss Beulah Collins, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid, wearing a dress of pink changeable taffeta, with a shower bouquet of pink roses. her accessories were of sand shade. The best man was Frank Keefe, of Victor, with Jean Long and Wilford O'Brien, both of this city, serving as ushers. 
Following the wedding, a breakfast was served to the immediate families at Florence Villa, and after a reception at the home
of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Long left by motor for Albany. From there they will go by airplane to Boston for ten days. The bride's going away costume was of brown chiffon velvet. 
Upon their return Mr. and Mrs. Long will reside in Victor, where the groom is chief engineer and manager at the control station of WHAM. His bride has been teaching in Victor. Both Mr. and Mrs. Long are graduates of St. Mary's Parochial school and Canandaigua Academy.

HOLTZ - MOHLAN  -  The marriage of John H. HOLTZ and Mrs. Glenna MOHLAN, both of Palmyra, took place at Canandaigua on Sunday.  The ceremony was preformed by Rev. George E. FINLAY, of Greenwich, Mass. who had been spending the past two weeks in this city, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John WOODSIDE, West Gibson street, next to the Baptist parsonage.  Mr. & Mrs. HOLTZ will reside in Palmyra.

DIED -  ELLIS    At Canandaigua, September 3, 1929, Mrs. Martha Robertson Ellis, widow of James Ellis, aged 81 years. 
 
Mrs. Martha S. Ellis, aged 81 years, widow of James A. Ellis, died at her home in West Gibson St. on Tuesday following a short illness with pneumonia.  She was born in Geneva and had resided in Canandaigua since 1858. She was a life long member of the First Congregational church. 
She is survived by two daughters, Miss Ada Ellis of Canandaigua, and Miss Ina Ellis of New York City, three sons, Arthur
Ellis of Peking, China, George Ellis and Herbert Ellis of Canandaigua, one sister, Mrs. Mary C. Stannard of Buffalo. 
Funeral services were held at the home yesterday afternoon with Rev. Dascomb E. Forbush, officiating. Interment was made in
Woodlawn Cemetery.   The bearers were Alexander Davidson, Charles Coe, Arthur Thompson, William M. Shoemaker, E. Raymond Church and William Tracey.

 THE  GRIM  REAPER  -   ELLIS
 
Mrs. Martha S. Ellis, widow of the late James A. Ellis, died at her home on West Gibson Street, yesterday, after a short illness of
pneumonia.  Mrs. Ellis was the daughter of John B. Robertson and Jane Sophia Robertson, and was born in Geneva, January 12, 1848.  John B. Robertson removed his family from Geneva in 1858, and Mrs. Ellis has resided in this city since that time. 
Her father, John B. Robertson, was a trustee of the Village of Canandaigua in 1882, again in 1884, and was chosen its president in 1885. She was the wife of James A. Ellis, one of the leading and most highly esteemed merchants and citizens of Canandaigua for many years. Mr. Ellis conducted the business with great success which his two sons George and Herbert, are now engaged in. Mr. Ellis was born in 1839 and died on March 18, 1923. 
Mrs. Ellis is survived by a sister, Mary C. Stannard, of Buffalo, by two daughters, Ada Ellis of this city, and Ina Ellis of New
York City, and three sons, Arthur, who is in Y. M. C. A. work in Peking, China, George Ellis and Herbert Ellis of this city. 
The funeral services will be held at the home, 40 West Gibson Street, Thursday afternoon. The burial will be at Woodlawn. Mrs. Ellis was a lifelong member of the First Congregational church, and Rev. Dascomb E. Forbush, pastor of that church, will officiate.  The bearers will be Alexander Davidson, Charles Coe, Arthur Thompson, William M. Shoemaker, E. R. Church and William Tracey.

 

FREER -  Charles E FREER, a respected, lifelong resident of Canandaigua, aged 76 years, passed away at his home at 127 Bristol street Saturday afternoon, following an eight and one half months illness.  Mr. FREER was a son of Henry & Elizabeth Price FREER.  He had been a prominent fruit grower of the town of Canandaigua for many years, retiring some years ago to come to Canandaigua to reside.The funeral was held from the residence yesterday afternoon, Rev. Stephen S. PRATT of the Methodist church, officiating.  The bearers were Edgar S. WHEATON, Wilbur L. DAVIS, Ray S. LEE, John A JOHNSON and John CASE of Canandaigua, and Arthur BUELL of East Bloomfield. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Mr. FREER is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Walter LOVELL of this city and Mrs. Elinor SALSICH of South Bristol; a brother, Hiram W. FREER of this city; a grandson, Earl W. SALSICH of Canandaigua and two great grandchildren.

Obituary - Mrs. John CHISHOLM died Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louis CROWLEY.  She is survived by her husband, two children, Charles CHISHOLM and Mrs. Louis CROWLEY, both of Victor; two sisters, Mrs. M. E. TOOMEY and Mrs. John MEHAN of Rochester, and one brother, Chris GOUGHERTY of Daytona, Fla.  Funeral, Saturday morning from the home of her daughter and at 9 o'clock at St. Patrick's church.

 

BOY RUNS IN FRONT OF TRUCK - HAS LEG BROKEN

Herbert BURLEY, 7 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer BURLEY, sustained a broken leg, last Friday afternoon, when he ran in front of a truck owned by L. G. Loomis & Son and driven by George FOOTER.  The child was playing with other children near his home, a tenant house on the F. G. HAWKINS farm, and suddenly ran into the road in front of the truck.  He was knocked down and the truck passed over him but not one of the wheels struck him.   He is being cared for at the Memorial Hospital in Canandaigua.  The break is between the knee and the hip.  The accident was investigated by the sheriff's office and FOOTER was exonerated.

 Mrs. Melvina A. Peck, aged 76 years, widow of Abram B. Peck, died at her home in Bristol Wednesday evening after a long illness. She
leaves two daughters, Mrs. William J. Hawley, and Miss Laura Peck of this city, a sister, and a brother, Mrs. Mary Hemingway of Bristol, and
George Ingraham of L. A., Cal., also a grandson, William J Hawley Jr. of this city.
Funeral services held from home Saturday PM, Rev. Charles A. Paille of Bristol Valley Congregational Church officiated. Interred in West Avenue Cemetery.

TURNER - Anna Barry TURNER, wife of W. H. TURNER, died Tuesday afternoon, October 1st at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.  She leaves, besides her husband, six sons, Everett, Ernest and Donald of Victor, Russell of Canandaigua, Roy of Buffalo, L. E. TURNER of Rochester and one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth KEATING of Rochester; also three brothers, John, Richard and Michael BARRY of Victor, and two sisters, Mrs. William LYONS of Victor and Mrs. Nellie DOUGLASS of Rochester.  Funeral services were held from the family home, three and one half miles southwest of Victor, Friday morning at 8:30 o'clock, and from St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, of which Mrs. TURNER has been a life long member, at 9 o'clock.

GRIFFING - Mrs. Isabelle George GRIFFING, aged 33 years, of Rochester, died at Memorial hospital, Monday night from the effects of a dose of poison taken Saturday.  Mrs. GRIFFING collapsed in the yard of her uncle, John BARRY of Victor, Saturday, after having driven her automobile from Rochester and was taken to Memorial hospital.  It is not known whether she took the poison by mistake or accident.  Mrs. GRIFFING leaves besides her husband, Oliver B. GRIFFING of Rochester, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Larry C. GEORGE, with whom she had been living; two sisters, Mrs. Eugene BRADT of Newark, NJ and Mrs. Roy VOLLICK of Rochester; a brother, Arthur GEORGE, and her grandmother, Mrs. Isabella BENNETT.  She was a member of Anna P. Cleary Tent, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the American Ladies Benefit Association. 

GUEST - Martin F. GUEST died suddenly last Saturday, of heart failure, while attending the Palmyra Fair.  He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ernest HOUSUWEZ of Fairport; a son, Harlow of Rochester; two brothers, William of Palmyra and Frank of Victor, and four grandchildren.  Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Tuesday afternoon.  Burial was made it the South Perinton cemetery. 

JACQUE - Jean Elsie JACQUE, aged 6 months, died in Memorial hospital, Canandaigua, October 4th.  Besides her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph JACQUE, she leaves four brothers, John, Danny, Fred and Billie; two sisters, Lolita and Mary Lou; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. COLEMAN.  Funeral will be held on Sunday at 2:30 from the home of the grandparents.  Burial in West avenue cemetery, Canandaigua.

WEDDING  BELLS -  ROUSE - BROCKELBANK
 
Miss Caroline H. Rouse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Rouse, and Edmund Brockelbank of Ossining, son of Mrs. Philip H. Brockelbank, Clark
street, this city, were married at the home of the bride's parents in Jefferson avenue, yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock. Rev. S. S. Pratt
performed the ceremony in the presence of about 30 guests. 
The bride wore a gown of golden color lace, with hose to match and slippers of brown suede. Her bouquet was of bride roses.
Following the ceremony dinner was served, twelve being seated at the bride's table which was centered with her bouquet, and lighted with
candles. The color scheme was peach and white. Mr. and Mrs. Brockelbank left for a short motor trip after which they will be at home in Ossining.
The bride was guest of honor at several social events including a dinner given by Mrs. Harry Rouse, Gorham street, a pink glass shower, by
Mrs. Charles Castle, a variety shower by Mrs. Gordon Harvey and Miss Marcia Fox, a kitchen shower by Mrs. Elmer Plyter, a silver shower by
Mrs. J. M. Kisor, and a casserole supper by Bates Bros. by whom the bride had been employed for several years.

DEATH OF MISS CHARLOTTE E. CLARK -  Last of Children of Governor Myron H. Clark
 
A gentle and much loved spirit passed out of Canandaigua life in the death of Charlotte E. Clark at her home in Gibson street, this city,
Saturday evening. 
Miss Clark's last illness was of brief duration. Up to within a fortnight of the end, she was able, despite her great age, to receive friends who called and to advise with her associates on the Board of Managers of the Clark Manor House on which she had served for many years. 
Miss Clark was nearly 91 years of age, having been born in Canandaigua, on November 21, 1838, and having spent her entire life here, except for the time the family were in Albany during her father's term as Chief Executive of the State. She received her education in the Ontario Female Seminary at Canandaigua, and in the Albany Female Seminary, graduating from the last mentioned institution in 1856.
 Miss Clark's nearest surviving relatives are two nephews, Hon. Clark Williams of New York, son of the Capt. and Mrs. George N. Williams
of Canandaigua, and Emory W. Clark of Detroit, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo E. Clark of that city. A Grand Niece Mary Clark Kirkham,
daughter of the late Mrs. Stanton D. Kirkham of this city, has made her home much of the time with Miss Clark. She is now a student in the
Michigan State University at Ann Arbor. 
Mr. and Mrs. Emory W. Clark have two daughters, Elizabeth, wife of Walbridge Taft of New York, and Martha, wife of Henry Sheldon of
Detroit, and one son, William Reeve Clark, of Detroit. Miss Cinda Watkins of Naples is a cousin of Miss Clark. 
Miss Clark was the last survivor of the five children, four daughters and one son, born to a family prominent in the pioneer history of this county and having forbears of honorable distinction in Revolutionary annals. Her Great Grandfather, Col. William Clark, brought his family of ten children, and four step children from Massachusetts to Naples, this county, in 1789. Col. Clark's eighth child, Joseph Clark, who served as a Major in the War of 1812, was the father of Myron Holley Clark, and the grandfather of Charlotte E. Clark, now deceased.
Myron H. Clark, Miss Charlotte's father, rose to political prominence being accorded election, first as Sheriff of Ontario County, then as State Senator from the Ontario-Livingston district, and finally in 1854, as Governor of the State. He attained the last mentioned honorable distinction through his selection as the candidate of Anti Slavery Whigs. Prohibition or "Maine Law" men, and representatives of the then newly organized Republican party. Elected through the condition of these political elements he became the first Republican Governor of this or any other State.
 
 Miss Clark's mother was, previous to her marriage to Myron H. Clark, June 14, 1830, Zilpha Watkins of Naples. The oldest of five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Myron H. Clark was a son, Lorenzo E. Clark, who was born in Naples, January 11, 1833, and died in Detroit, April 22, 1919. The next child was Zilpha, Mrs. Samuel D. Backus, of Canandaigua, who was born in Naples, August 3, 1834, and died in Canandaigua, June 6, 1915. A second sister, Mary, Mrs. Frederick Ferris Thompson, of New York City, was born in Naples, December 7, 1835, and died in Canandaigua, July 28, 1923. Charlotte E. Clark was born in Canandaigua, November 21, 1838, and the youngest of the sisters, Abigail Stanley, Mrs. George N. Williams, was born in Canandaigua, September 24, 1843, and died here, January 24, 1902.
 Miss Clark was in frail health from early girlhood. Unable to engage actively in the community life, she remained the center of a quiet and singularly devoted home circle and availed herself of every occasion to manifest her keen interest in the happiness of the people by whom she was surrounded. She showed a special interest in young people, particularly in the young men connected with our local volunteer Fire Department. It is remembered that some years ago, before the fire fighting equipment was motorized, she provided the Merrill Hose Company, of which a young man in her household was a member and an officer, with a particularly handsome team of horses. She gave the village a national flag of huge proportions and otherwise manifested a deep interest in civic affairs, while contributing liberally to church, missionary and political organizations whose interests she had at heart. She especially befriended the Memorial Hospital that her sister, Mrs. Thompson, founded and she served, as stated above, as a member of the Board of Managers in the care of the Clark Manor House, another of Mrs. Thompson's benefactions to the community. She was a liberal in her gifts to the Congregational church, of which she was a member from girlhood, to the Ontario County Historical Society in the founding and maintenance of which she helped generously, and to other local organizations and to individuals in need of aid or encouragement.
Relatives and friends gathered for the funeral service held in the home yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock and a wealth of flowers testified to the respect and love of organizations and individuals. 
The service was conducted by Rev. Livingston L. Taylor of Keene Valley and Rev. Lewis T. Reed of Flatbush, former pastors of the church
of which Miss Clark had been a life long member, and was of a most appropriate character. 
 The following professional and business men acted as honorary bearers, Justice Robert F. Thompson, Dr. John H. Jewett, Edward G. Hayes, George W. Hamlin, William Seward of Auburn, Dr. Robert G. Cook, Charles C. Sackett, Addison P. Wilbur, Ira N. Croucher, Dr. Fred
McClellan, Frank Eighmey and Charles F. Milliken.
The active bearers were, E. Raymond Church, William J. Tracey, Alexander Davidson, Arthur Thompson, Fred Kershaw and Welson Kershaw,
all members of the Merrill Hose company. The interment was in the family plot in Woodlawn.

DEATHS: 

BROCKMYRE - Funeral services of Mrs. Nellie BROCKMYRE, aged 28 years, wife of Henry BROCKMYRE, formerly of Canandaigua were held at St. Mary's church on Tuesday.  Death occurred on Sunday at Iola Sanitarium, following a lingering illness, and the body was brought to the undertaking rooms of Aherns & Breen, in this city.  She leaves besides her husband, one son, Henry Jr., her mother, Mrs. Anna FEDDISH of Hazelton, PA; three sisters and four brothers; Mrs. Veronica PANICO of New York City, Mrs. Anna SWETZ,  Mary TERRISH, and Dr. FEDDISH, all of Hazelton, PA.   Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery.

GALLUP - Funeral services for Sara M. GALLUP, widow of George GALLUP, were held from her home in Sweden on Monday afternoon.  Interment was made in Garland.  The survivors are three sons and a daughter, Irad C. GALLUP of Canandaigua; Charles H. GALLOP and Helen C. GALLUP of Adams Basin; John GALLUP of Bradentown, Fla; a sister, Cora DARLING of Adams Basin.

JONES - Mark A. JONES died at his home in Shortsville on Monday.  Besides his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth JONES, he is survived by three daughters, Catherine, Mildred and Arlene; his mother, Mrs. Mary JONES of West Gibson street, Canandaigua; one brother, Erving JONES of Canandaigua; one sister, Mrs. Dorothy KRIEM of Dansville.  Funeral services were held at Mt. Hope Chapel, Rochester, on Wednesday and interment was made in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

BURLINGHAM will sell at public auction at his residence known as the old BUCKALEW farm, 3 miles west of Bristol Center, 2 miles west of Vincent and 5 miles east of Honeoye, on Friday, December 6, commencing at noon: 2 horses, 7 head of cattle, poultry, including white Leghorns, Plymouth Rocks, 45 hens, 4 shoals, oats, barley, hay, straw, farming utensils and quantity of household goods.  Arnold J. EMERSON will be auctioneer. 

 

J. Lewis SALISBURY, Well Known in County as Agriculturist - County Honor

The Master Farmer selected this year from Ontario County is J. Lewis SALISBURY& of Phelps.  Mr. SALISBURY operates a farm of 165 acres just outside of Phelps.  The business is well diversified, the principal sours of income being apples, potatoes, cabbage and cows.

Mr. & Mrs. SALISBURY have four boys, one of whom is now with Mr. SALISBURY on the farm.  The Salisbury home is attractive and convenient and has all of the modern labor saving devices.  Mr. SALISBURY is known as a man who is never to busy to spend time on community work.  He is interested in his church, his Farm Bureau, Grange, and works with the boys and girls.

Mr. SALISBURY is a Democratic Supervisor-elect from the town of Phelps, having been chosen by the ballots on November 5th.  He will take his seat at the first meeting in January. He is well know throughout the county for his agricultural activities and his service on the county legislative organization where he has previously served.  

The Master Farmer chosen from this county and thirteen others from all sections of New York State will be guests of honor at the Second Annual Master Farmer Banquet in New York City on December 12th.  This banquet will be give by American Agriculturist, whose publisher is Henry MORGENTHAU, Jr.   Governor Franklin D. ROOSVELT will personally present gold medals to and confer the title of Master Farmer on each of these fourteen men.  the actual presentation of the medals will be broadcast from 8:30 to 9:30 PM from radio station WNYC.

WALLINGTON WOMAN DIES OF INJURIES Canandaigua, Jan. 17 - Mrs. Delia W. McDOWELL, 85, of Wallington, widow of William McDOWELL, died at Memorial Hospital here last night of injuries received when an automobile in which she was riding with her son, Dr. Barton T. McDOWELL of Bristol Center, Ontario County's school hygiene director, skidded on an icy roadway near Bristol and plunged down an embankment on Jan. 1. Mrs. McDOWELL suffered a fracture of the pelvis. She was born in Huron, Wayne County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph WHITTING. Her husband died many years ago and she leaves only the one son and a grandson, Harold McDOWELL of Rochester. Funeral services will be con   (cut off)

LYONS MAN WHO BROKE NECK IS RECOVERING
Clifton Springs, Aug. 26 - Reports from the Clifton Springs Sanitarium and Clinic today indicate satisfactory progress in the condition of Dr. R. S. SIMPSON of Lyons who received a broken neck last Friday while diving in shallow water in Canandaigua Lake.
Dr. SIMPSON struck a rock while diving from a platform and fractured the seventh vertebrae. He was removed to the sanitarium here and was attended by Dr. T. A. WHITNEY of Rochester and Dr. Charles W. WEBB, chief surgeon of the sanitarium, assisted by Dr. W. P. RHUDY, associate surgeon at the sanitarium.

DRIVER GOES TO JAIL
Geneva, Aug. 26 - Herbert WHITEHEAD drove his automobile Sunday into a truck owned by the Crouch firm on the new Stanley road. He wrecked his own car. It was alleged that he was intoxicated at the time.

At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hyland Hurlburt Saturday evening took place the marriage of their youngest son, James F. Hurlburt, to Miss
Mabel Smith, of Canandaigua. Rev. Charles A. Paille, of Bristol Center, performed the ceremony under an arch of ground pine and smilax.
 
The bride, who was attended by her sister, Miss Alma Smith, wore a bright blue dress with matching accessories. The bridesmaid was in tan.
Stillman Simons, of East Bloomfield was best man. 
Following the ceremony a duck dinner was served to 30 guests. Ten were seated at the bride's table which was centered with a wedding cake.
Mr. and Mrs. Hurlburt will live in Naples. Guests were present from Canandaigua, Naples, Boswell Corners, Bristol Center, Allen's Hill and
Rochester.
A reception for the couple will be held this evening at the home of the bride's cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hurlburt, in Naples.

COTTON - BARBER - At the Baptist parsonage in Canandaigua, Wednesday evening, November 26th, took place the marriage of Miss Hazel E. BARBER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer E. BARBER of Canandaigua, to John d. COTTON, son of Mrs. Alice COTTON, of Victor.  Rev. Kenneth L. COBER performed the ceremony and the couple were attended by Mrs. John BRAHM, sister of the bride, and Oscar GARDNER, both of Canandaigua.  Mr. and Mrs. COTTON will reside in Canandaigua.
