ONTARIO PLANS COUNTY CIVIL SERVICE UNIT 
Commission Form Due for Board Approval
 
Canandaigua - A commission form of civil service administration for Ontario County will be recommended to the Board of Supervisors here today by a special committee headed by Supervisor Fred G. LYON, Naples.
After several months of study, this committee has  decided in favor of the county civil service commission as the best of three optional forms of
administrating the civil service extension law which goes into effect July 1, 1942, Chairman LYON said yesterday.
Other members of the committee are Supervisor Casnter E. RAPELEE, Geneva City, and Alexander M. LANE, Gorham. Supervisors are expected to approve recommendations as drafted by this committee. Members of the commission to serve without pay will be made by the Board of Supervisors for  overlapping terms of six years. Under the law, not more than two members of such a commission may be of the same political party. Supervisors can elect to ignore the committee's recommendations and vote for a county personnel officer or may elect the State Civil Service Commission to administer the county services it now administers for the state and several counties.
Recommendations for salary boosts for county employees in the lower bracket will be made to supervisors today by a special committee headed by
Supervisor Fayette S. TAYLOR, Geneva Town. Among those probably affected by the recommendations are some employees of Sheriff Walter A.  ELLING's staff and several low-salaried clerks and stenographers in various county departments.  Authorization for such recommendations was voted by supervisors at a regular meeting early this month.
Mayor George McG. HAYES will begin his third term tomorrow by reappointing Guy M. RAINES as city clerk, Edward J. COLMEY as city  attorney and Browning CROWELL as a member of the board of assessors, he announced yesterday.  These are the only city officers to be filled by mayoralty  appointment.
Few if any changes are expected in Canandaigua City's official family next year. All aldermen were returned to office in the fall election. They are
expected to re-elect George W. URSTADT as president of  the Common Council and reappoint all officials for which they have charter  authority at the re-organization meeting Jan. 5. Offices thus to be filled are  city scaler, two assessors, two members each of the Board of Health and Public  Safety and the Board of Public Works.

DAVIS - Stanley J. DAVIS of 129 Washington St., Canandaigua, N. Y., entered into rest, Apr. 3, 1942. He is survived by his wife, Helen McCLURE DAVIS; his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. George SMITH of Aloquin, N. Y.; two nieces and two  nephews.
Services from the home Monday at 3 p.m., Rev. Stephen S. PRATT officiating. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

DEATHS - John CONE - Canandaigua - John CONE, 75, life long resident of this city, died here yesterday, July 17, 1942, in Memorial Hospital.  Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas LYNAUGH, Victor,  and Miss Maria CONE, Rochester; two sisters, Mrs. Bridget MILES, Salamanca, and Mrs. Nora DURNIN, Penn Yan, and two brothers, Martin and Edward CONE, Reed Corners.  Funeral will be at 10 am Monday in St. Mary's Church with burial in Calvary cemetery.

 NAVY AWARDS MEDAL TO CANANDAIGUAN
 
MIAMI -   Lt. Walter T. Flynn, Canandaiguan, Commander of a 173 foot sub-chaser which sank a German submarine recently in the Atlantic, was
decorated with the Medal of the Legion of Merit yesterday.
The Navy previously had told of the swift action in which the sub-chaser blasted the U-boat to the surface, then destroyed it with gunfire, taking its commander, the sole survivor, prisoner.
Commander E. F. McDaniel, Commandant of the Miami sub-chaser training center, pinned the medal on Flynn at simple ceremonies.

GUNNISON -  Mrs. George H. Gunnison, passed from this life August 22, 1944, at the family home in Bristol Valley Road, Canandaigua, NY, RD 3.  Antoinette Smith, was born in Victor, February 27, 1875, daughter of Hinman B. and Catherine Smith. During most of her life, until ill health prevented, she was active in church and community work, and was at one time president of the Victor Unity Club.  Besides her husband she is survived by three children, Mrs. T. H. Townsend of Waterville, Mrs. William Millard, Canandaigua, and George S. Gunnison, of Rochester. A son, Hugh T., died in 1918. Other surviving relatives are two brothers, Charles E. and Harley M. Lovejoy of Victor, sons of Edward E. Lovejoy and Catherine Smith Lovejoy, eleven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.  Burial will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Victor  -  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 P. M. today in the Sale and Cotton Funeral Home here for Mrs. George H. Gunnison of Bristol Valley, formerly of Victor, who died Tuesday August 22, 1944.  The Rev. Nelson L. Lobdell will officiate at the funeral and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua.

Bundy, 58, of Hopewell, who died at his home Tuesday evening, August 22, 1944, will be held from the Dhondt Funeral Home, South Main St. this Friday afternoon. The Rev. S. S. Pratt will officiate and burial will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery.   Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Flora Caldwell Bundy, five daughters, Mrs. Alton Jones, Mrs. Allen Pimm, and Mrs. Ralph Pimm, Hopewell, Mrs. Justin Houseknecht, Canandaigua, and Mrs. Frank Shekell, Clifton Springs, five sons, LaVerne Bundy, Vestal, Kenneth Bundy, Canandaigua, Pvt. Paul W. Bundy, Elmira, now a prisoner of war in Germany, Cpl. Donald Bundy, stationed in Italy, and Pfc. Howard Bundy, of Charleston, S. C., his mother, Mrs. Cornelia E. Bundy, Canandaigua, three sisters, Mrs. Inez Tum, Ulster, PA., Mrs. Harry Brown, Canandaigua, and Mrs. Fred Linehan, Rochester, two brothers, Adelmon Bundy, Honeoye Falls, and Ira Bundy, Savanah, also 12 grandchildren.

James R. Breen Injured In France - Another Ontario County soldier has been wounded in France, it was learned here when the War Department reported to Mrs. Margaret BREEN, Hopewell, that her son, Pvt. James R. BREEN, 22, had been hit, October 3.  Inducted into the Army on September 30, 1943, Pvt. BREEN was sent to England after four months' training and had been fighting in France since the early invasion days.  He is a graduate of Canandaigua Academy.  A brother, Cpl. Howard M. BREEN, is with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific.

Death Brings to Close Long Life of Augustine SACKETT - Augustine SACKETT, 78, one of Canandaigua's oldest and most respected business men, who had conducted an insurance agency in the city for 33 years, died in F. F. Thompson hospital, Wednesday.  He had been admitted as a patient only the day before, but had been confined to his bed for several days previously.  He had not been in robust health for the last two or three years, but up until about 10 days before his death, was able to attend to affairs of business and was at his office almost daily until the severe winter storms made it inadvisable for him to leave his home.  Born in Canandaigua town, son of Henry A. and Delia Parks SACKETT, Mr. SACKETT was educated in the rural school in his district and later in Canandaigua Academy.  Except for a brief residence in Muncie and Indianapolis, Ind., and 6 years of serving as comptroller's clerk in Sing Sing, and other eastern state's prisons, Mr. SACKETT spent his entire life in Canandaigua.  As a young man he held positions with the old Canandaigua Electric Light Company and the Pennsylvania Railroad.  Returning to Canandaigua from his post in the State service in 1912, he purchased the fire and casualty insurance agency of Cyrus D. Henry and in 1918, bought a similar agency of John Raines & Sons.  In 1922 the agency was incorporated under the name of the Sackett Agency, Inc.  He held many 25 year awards from various companies he represented.  

A charter member of Canandaigua Rotary Club, organized in 1919, Mr. SACKETT was also a past master of Canandaigua Lodge, F & AM, a member of Excelsior Chapter, RAM, and Red Jacket Commandery, Knights Templar.  He also was an active member of the Canandaigua Methodist Church and for many years he served as president of its Board of Trustees.  For many years he was treasurer of the Ontario County Republican Committee.  

Quiet and unassuming, Mr. SACKETT was always a willing contributor of time and money to every worthwhile civic enterprise.  Kindly and fair, in all his dealings, he was uncompromising in his stand for what he believed to be right.  He was a stalwart of a generation which is all too rapidly passing from the scene, and whose good work and fine principles should be emulated by succeeding generations. 

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emma Wolverton SACKETT, to whom he was married in 1898, and a nephew, George BENHAM of Penn Yan.  Funeral services will be held from the home, 115, Howell street at 2:30 o'clock this (Friday) afternoon, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.  

 

 

Canandaiguans Are Killed, Seriously Wounded In Action - Two popular young Canandaiguans, one of whom had been in France less than two weeks, were reported killed and another seriously wounded, by the War Department, in messages received within the past week.   Killed were Pfc. James T. GRIEVE, 26 and Pvt. Jack D. BURRETT, 18, while the wounded soldier is Cpl. Technician, George E. POPPLEWELL, 33. 

Pfc. GRIEVE, who was killed in action on Luzon, January 21, was born in Canandaigua, a son of the late Alexander and Mrs. Sylvia VanDeVoorde GRIEVE.  He graduated from St. Mary's parochial school and attended Canandaigua Academy before entering the taxicab business which he conducted for five years before entering the Army.  He had been in service in the South Pacific since April 1943.  Besides his mother, he leaves three brothers and three sisters, George, of Holcomb, Alexander of Rochester, and Robert of this city, who Saturday received his call to report for induction March 5; Mrs. Henry HAIGHT and Misses Helen and Isabel GRIEVE, of this city. 

 

Pvt. BURRETT was the son of Mrs. Frank BURRETT, Gorham street.  He was graduated last June from Canandaigua Academy.  He was inducted into the service in August and trained at Fort Mc Clellan, Ala.  He left for Fort George G. Meade, Md., for overseas about January 9 and died in action in France on January 31.  His last letter home was written January 22.    Pvt. BURRETT was born in Rochester and had been a resident of Canandaigua about two years, coming here from Honeoye.  Besides his mother, survivors are three sisters and a brother, Mrs. P. H. WIRSING and Mrs. H. E. BENNETT of this city; Mrs. H. C. STEWARD, Holcomb and M. C. BURRETT, Rochester. 

 

Mr. and Mrs. George POPPLEWELL, Howell street, were notified that their son, George, was seriously wounded on Luson, January 12.  He was serving as a carpenter with an engineer aviation battalion.  The message said he had been hospitalized and included the address which may be obtained from his parents.  Inducted November 10, 1942, he trained in Florida, at Geiger Field, Spokane, Wash and Wendover Field, Utah, before going overseas in June.  He is a graduate of Canandaigua Academy.

+  Clifford SADLER Returns To Base After Furlough - Clifford SADLER, S 1-c, has returned to Newport, R.I. after an eight day leave spent with his wife and son and with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry SADLER, Canandaigua.  A dinner party was given in his honor by Mr. and Mrs. Sherman ERNST of Mendon, during his leave.  He is a radio operator.

BACON - THOMPSON - In St. Luke's Episcopal church in Southern Pines, NC, Friday afternoon, April 6, 1945 at 5:00 o'clock, took place the marriage of Miss Edith Elaine THOMPSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Grieve THOMPSON of Fort Hill avenue, this city, and Staff Sergeant John Stebbins BACON, USMC, Cherry Point, NC. son of Mr. and Mrs. Orrin S. BACON, of Miami, Fla., formerly of Canandaigua.  The Rev. Craighill F. BROWN, rector of the church, performed the ceremony.  Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attended by her cousin, Mrs. Joseph Lee BROWN, Southern Pines, while Carl G. THOMPSON, uncle of the bride, was best man.  Following the ceremony a reception was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl O. THOMPSON, former Canandaiguans.  Sergeant and Mrs. BACON will live at 114 Broad street, New Berrn, NC.  A machinist with Marine ___ation unit at Cherry Point, Sergeant BACON returned in January, after 17 months in the Pacific.  He enlisted in October 1942, and served with a fighter squadron in the Sar___ and the Gilbert and Marshall chain.  He attended Canandaigua Academy and Rochester Institute of Technology. Mrs. BACON attend Canandaigua Academy, Emma Willard School and Rochester Institute of Technology.  Since last fall, she had been a member of the staff of Look magazine in New York.

Farmer Hurt In Battle With Burglar - Sheriff's Deputies, James L. LOCKE and Oren H. SANGSTER, are investigating a series of thefts of tools and feed from the Mrs. Elmer COLF place in Cheshire, which is farmed by Frank HICKS.  In an encounter with the thief, on March 31, Mr. HICKS was struck on the head with a blunt instrument and so badly hurt as to require medical attention.  On that occasion, he heard the barn door open at night and ran out of the house in time to see a man leaving with a bag of cow chow on his shoulder.  The man dropped the bag and started to run.  HICKS caught him and was struck on the right temple in the struggle that followed.  It was too dark to identify the intruder who got into a car and drove away towards Cheshire.  In an encounter with a burglar in December, HICKS fired a shotgun leaded with bird shot as the man dropped a bag of corn and ran.  Tools and feed have been disappearing for some time, it is reported.

OBITUARY     PURDY
 
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock, this Friday afternoon, from the Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Martha M. Purdy, 83,
widow of James Purdy, who died May 16, 1945, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Brockelbank, North Bloomfield Road. The Rev. Hardy Lumb will officiate and interment will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery.    A daughter of Samuel and Nancy Godfrey Johnson, Mrs. Purdy was a life long resident of Canandaigua. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Rochester Road Sewing Society and Canandaigua Grange. 
Survivors are three sons, Royal R., John J., and J. Clifford Purdy, Canandaigua, four daughters, Mrs. Edith Horton, New Suffolk, Long Island, Mrs. Mary E. Brockelbank, Mrs. Marguerite Outhouse, and Mrs. Josephine King, Canandaigua, one brother, Thomas Johnson, of Canandaigua, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Broomfield, Farmington.

Herbert C. FERGUSON Promoted to Sergeant - Herbert C. FERGUSON, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. John FERGUSON of Canandaigua RD2, has been promoted to the grade of sergeant, according to an announcement form the 15th AAF in Italy.  Radio operator-gunner on a B-24 bomber, sergeant FERGUSON is stationed in Italy, with the veteran 459th Bombardment Group, which began combat operations in March 1944, and has since flown 242 combat missions to all parts of German held territory and has been awarded the Distinguished Unit citation.  Sergeant FERGUSON, formerly employed by Eastman Kodak Company as a machinist, has flown 14 combat missions and has been awarded the Air Medal and one Oak Leaf Cluster, and also wears the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, with three battle stars.  His wife, Mrs. Trudy FERGUSON, resides at Geneva, RD 2.

OBITUARY - RYAN
 Funeral services for Edward M. Ryan, 62, well known Canandaigua business man who died at his home in North Main Street, July 15, 1945, following a long illness, were held from St. Mary's Church, Wednesday morning. Interment was made in Calvary Cemetery, Canandaigua. 
Born in Victor, Mr. Ryan had spent most of his life in this city. A member of the Canandaigua City Democratic Committee, he was
active in party affairs. He was also a member of Canandaigua Council, K. of C. 
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary Ryan, one daughter, Miss Madeline Ryan, and a son, John Ryan, all of Canandaigua, one brother,
Patrick J. Ryan of Hopewell, a sister, Miss Mary E. Ryan and three grandchildren, all of Canandaigua.

Herendeen, 82, well known retired Canandaiguan, who died at his home in Park Avenue, Wednesday, September 12, 1945, after a long illness. Rev. S. S. Pratt will officiate, assisted by the Rev. S. S. Davies, D. D., pastor of the Methodist Church of Canandaigua, of which Mr. Herendeen was a member. Interment will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Born June 25, 1863, in Farmington, he was a son of Oscar D. and Anna Smith Herendeen, and had resided in Canandaigua for the past 26 years.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Minnie Powers Herendeen, one son, Howard D. Herendeen, Canandaigua, and a grandson, Edward L. Herendeen of
Johnson City, also two great grandchildren.

WOODRUFF - Funeral services will be held today, Friday, at 2:00 pm, for Silas Henry WOODRUFF, 91, lifelong resident of Canandaigua, who died Tuesday, September 25, 1945, in his home in Phelps street.  Services will be from the Kennedy Funeral chapel in Bristol street, the Rev. Hardy LUMB officiating.  Interment will be made in West Avenue Cemetery, Canandaigua.  A member of the old Canandaigua Band for many years, Mr. WOODRUFF died after a long illness.  He was on the honor roll of the Mutual Hook and Ladder Company of this city.  Survivors are a son, Roy W. WOODRUFF of Canandaigua and an grandson, Roy W. WOODRUFF Jr., with a heavy artillery unit in the Pacific area.  

BENHAM - Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Mary Babcock BENHAM, 79, who died Friday, September 21, 1945, after a long illness.  The Rev. Hardy LUMB officiated and interment was made (cut off)

OBITUARY  -   JOHNSON 
Funeral services for Mrs. Nora Long Johnson, 72, who died suddenly, October 26, 1945, in the home of her sister in law, Mrs. Peter Long, South Pearl Street, were held from St. Mary's Church, Monday morning. Interment was made in Calvary Cemetery. 
Born in Canandaigua, she was a daughter of Dennis and Ann McCort Long. Her husband died in 1927 in Buffalo, where they had resided for many years. She returned to Canandaigua about a year ago.  Survivors are two brothers, John J. Long of this city and Jeremiah Long of Syracuse, also several nieces and nephews.

OBITUARY -  SCANLON
 
Entered into rest, November 8, 1945, at the family home, 91 Filmore Street, Mr. John Francis Scanlon. 
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Daisy Figencher Scanlon, one daughter, Mrs. Robert Prince, one son, PFC Bernard Scanlon, somewhere in the Pacific, two brothers, Mr. Daniel Scantlin and Mr. Thomas Scantlin, both of this city, and eight grandchildren, two of which Cpls. Gordon and Kenneth Prince, are serving with the armed forces overseas.  Mr. Scanlon is resting at the funeral chapel of Ryan and McIntee Inc., 207 Chestnut St., from where funeral services will be held Friday morning, November 9, 1945, at 8 30 o'clock and at 9 o'clock at St. Augustine's Church. Interment at Holy Seplechure Cemetery.

OBITUARY  -   SCANTLIN 
John Scantlin, 68, son of the late William and Mary Deer Scantlin of Canandaigua, died at his home in Rochester, Tuesday, November 6, 1945 after a long illness.  For 12 years he traveled with Barlow's Minstrels and for about 30 years was an acrobatic buck and wing dancer.  For some time he was a member of the Vaudeville team of Scantlin and Burke, his partner having been the late Frank Burke, also a Canandaiguan.   A resident of Rochester for about 40 years, he had operated a restaurant for a quarter of a century.   Besides his wife, Mrs. Daisy Figencher Scantlin, he leaves a son and daughter, Bernard, who has been serving on Okinawa, and Mrs. Robert Prince, Rochester, two brothers, Thomas and Daniel Scantlin, Rochester, and eight grandchildren.    
 

 WEDDING  BELLS       SAGE - PIERCE 

In the First Congregational Church, Sunday afternoon, November 4, 1945, took place the marriage of Miss Marcia Isabel Pierce, R. N., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irmin L. Pierce, Perry Place, and Sergeant William A. Sage of South Main street. 
Vows were heard by the Rev. Richard H. Bowen, pastor of the church. The bride was attended by Miss Anita Plumb, R. N., of Rochester, a classmate, as maid of honor, and Miss Shirley Pierce, her sister, Mrs. Richard Guard, sister of the bridegroom, both of this city, as bridesmaids. Richard Guard, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, was best man and ushers were Irmin L. Pierce, Jr., EM  1 c, USN, brother of the bride, and Raymond J. Russell of Canandaigua. 

Following the ceremony high tea was served to 75 guests in the church social rooms. Miss Lutie L. Gooding and Mrs. Raymond J. Russell poured. After a wedding trip to Canada, Sergeant Sage will return to Cherry Point, N. C., for his honorable discharge after three years in the service. He served 10 months in the South Pacific with the Air Forces, returning to the States in April.

 
His decorations include the Asiatic Pacific ribbon with two battle stars, the American Theater ribbon, the Philippine Liberation
ribbon with one star, the Presidential Unit and Navy Citations, and the Victory ribbon.  He and his bride are graduates of Canandaigua Academy and Mrs. Sage was graduated in June, 1944, from Highland Hospital School of Nursing.

CLAWSON - Funeral services for Arthur R. CLAWSON ,60, who died Tuesday, November 6, 1945, at his home in Telyea street, were held Thursday afternoon, the Rev. S. S. PRATT officiating.  Burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.  Mr. CLAWSON was born in Rock Stream, November 11, 1884.  he was a member of Canandaigua Lodge, IOOF, and the Methodist Church.   Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Edith Barber CLAWSON; one son, Earl B. CLAWSON, recently discharged from the Army after serving in the European Theater, and two grandchildren, Donald Earl and Jean Andrew CLAWSON, this city. 

HOSEY - Funeral services for Thomas HOSEY, 75, Beals street, who died Sunday, November 4, 1945, in F. F. Thompson Hospital, were held from St. Dominic's church, Shortsville, Thursday morning.  Interment was made in St Patrick's cemetery in Macedon.  Mr. HOSEY was born in Farmington, July 24, 1870, and for a number of years bought produce for his brother, James HOSEY, who operated a coal and produce business in Manchester. Retiring 15 years ago, he moved to Canandaigua.  Survivors are one brother, William HOSEY, Palmyra, and a nephew, Leslie HOSEY, Manchester. 

MASSAGLIA - MC FARLANE - Miss Jean Caroline MC FARLANE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David E. MC FARLANE, formerly of this city (Canandaigua) , and Dobbs Ferry, are now of Fulton, was married Friday, November 2, 1945, in the Little Church Around the Corner, to Ensign Paoli E. C. MASSAGLIA, USNR, son of Mrs. Ida R. MASSAGLIA and the late Dr. Aldo C. MASSAGLIA, Laureat d'Institute Pasteur, who came to the United States as exchange professor of pathology form the University of Genoa to Northwestern University.    The bride wore a town of turquise crepe with matching hat and had a corsage of orchids.  She (cut off)

Dr. Harry M. SMITH Dies from Heart Attack at Rotary

Canandaigua was shocked and saddened early Thursday afternoon, by the news of the sudden death of Dr. Harry Marquis SMITH, from a heart attack.  Dr. SMITH had attended a meeting of the Rotary Club, of which he was a member.  He was stricken in the lobby of the Hotel Canandaigua, where he died.  Dr. SMITH became ill with a heart ailment four years ago. Relinquishing his extensive practice, which included much surgical work, he spent the winter of 1942 in Florida.  He returned to Canandaigua considerably improved in health but had not fully resumed the activities of previous years.  Born in Canandaigua about 56 years ago, Dr. SMITH was a son of the late Charles and Anna Boswell SMITH.  He spent most of his life here.  Graduated from the New York University Medical College in 1912, he became associated with the late Dr. Albert L. BEAHAN in the management of the Canandaigua Hospital of Physicians and Surgeons and later built up a large private practice.  Dr. SMITH was a fellow of the American college of Surgeons, a member of the State, Ontario County and City Medical societies; the Canandaigua Scientific Association and was prominent in Masonic Circles.  Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ruby VanVechten SMITH; two daughters, Dr. Isobel, the wife of Dr. Augustus W. SAINSBURY, now with the United States Navy Medical Corps on Guam, and Miss Helen I. SMITH of this city; one son, John V. SMITH, a student in Syracuse University, and two grandchildren, David William and Ann SAINSBURY.  

 

Suicide Verdict In Death of Stanley HOLLAND

A verdict of suicide was issued by Coroner E. S. BROWN, in the death of Stanley HOLLAND, 39, whose body was found Wednesday morning, December 26, 1945, in the barn at his farm home in Littleville.  Deputies Edward M. BREEN and Calvin P. BROWN, who investigated, said HOLLAND shot himself through the heart with a 12 gauge shotgun.  It was reported that HOLLAND arose at 5:40 a.m. and his wife, Doris, found a note on the kitchen table at 7:30.  She went to a neighbor's for aid.  The sheriff's deputies were notified and they found HOLLAND in the hay mow of the barn.  He is said to have been despondent for some time.  Besides his wife, he leaves three children, Hurbert Stanley, 5; Clifford Irving, 4, and Robert Eugene HOLLAND, 19 months.

+  Mrs. Clyde HERRINGTON, who was ill with laryngitis over the weekend, was able to resume teaching in Cheshire Union School, the middle of the week.

+  William TAYLOR of Willard called on friends Saturday afternoon.  He was a former resident here.

+  Mr. and Mrs. Harold JOHNSON and son, John Case JOHNSON, EM, who is at home on furlough, and Miss Patricia MACK of Canandaigua were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. DOUGLASS of Rochester. 

+  A. L. WILLYS observed his 88th birthday last Saturday.  He as been a patient in F. F. Thompson Hospital, Canandaigua, for the past three years.  

+  Mr. and Mrs. Carl REED and their daughter have moved into the DRUSCHEL home. 

+  John Walter ABEEL of Owego spent the weekend with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John VAN WIE. 

+  Mrs. Donald READ received an injury to one of her hands, Monday morning, in a fall at her home. 

+  Mrs. Albert BUNNELL & son, Bruce, will leave this week for several weeks with her parents, Dr. & Mrs. GREEN in Jamestown. 

+  Mr. and Mrs. Frank BARNUM expect to leave this week, for an extended visit with their son, William BARNUM and Mrs. BARNUM in Florida.  Albert BUNNELL is taking them by auto. 

+  Mrs. Melvin PIERCE of the Middle Cheshire road, spent last week with her sister, Mrs. Elton SMITH in Syracuse.  Mrs. Leon PIERCE spent the week with her son and family.
