Prominent Business Man Dies
E. Raymond Church, 69, Is Dead
E. Raymond Church, widely known
resident and business figure in Canandaigua, died early Monday afternoon at
his home on the West Lake road. He was 69.
Mr. Church had been ill for the
past three months. He was stricken in late March during
his annual winter visit to Passa Grille, Florida, with a blood ailment which
was later diagnosed as an unusual form of leukemia. He remained in a serious
condition in a St. Petersburg hospital for about four weeks. He returned to
this city and his West Lake road home on April 21.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the home,
Rev.
Richard H. Brown, pastor of the First Congregational church, officiated
and burial was made in Woodlawn cemetery. The house was filled for the
services and the large group of friends and relatives who attended overflowed
onto the porches and lawn.
The bearers were Edward T. Hanley, Arthur
E. Thompson, Lynn W.
Booth, Arthur C. Simmons, C. Jack Averill, all of Canandaigua, and Robert
Burns of Fairport. The members of the Rotary Club of which Mr.
Church was a member for 25 years, and of the Merrill Hose company with
which he had been identified for 40 years attended in body.
The Church family has been a part of Canandaigua for 75 years,.
In the spring of 1873 Mr. Church's father, Elihu
Chapin Church, came to this community and established a real estate and
insurance office in the Draper Block. Two years later he moved his business to
the Bemis Block, and the Church office has been here since that time. The office has had the telephone number, "1", during the
whole 65 years of telephone installation in Canandaigua.
Mr. Church was born in Canandaigua
on April 29, 1879. His mother was the former Miss
Mary Angeline Chalmers, daughter of an Oswego Lake captain. His father,
Elihu Chapin Church, and his mother had been
married in 1875, and were residing at 85 Gibson Street when Mr.
Church was born. E. Raymond Church
attended Canandaigua Academy, graduating with the class
of 1896. He attended and was graduated from both St. Paul's school and from
Rochester Business Institute.
The real estate firm became Church and Church in the first years
of this century and it continued this name until the winter of 1915 with the
death of E. Chapin Church. The father's health
failed during the last year of his life, a heart ailment aggravated by asthma
keeping him largely inactive. Since his father's passing on January 11, 1915, Mr.
Church operated the business alone and expanded it substantially.
During the last few months direction of business affairs fell to his son-in-law, Rexford W.
Brockelbank, who will continue the real estate office and insurance
agency.
Mr. Church was twice married. His
first wife was the former Miss Jean Davidson, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. James Davidson, long a prominent
shoe merchant here. They were married in June 1907, and resided in Gibson
Street and Greig Terrace. Mrs. Church died on
November 5, 1926. About 15 years ago Mr. Church
married Miss Anne Meath of this city, member of a
well known family here.

Cloid Sprankle Grocer 38 Years,
Plans To Retire
Cloid A. Sprankle, 109 Chapel St.,
the city's oldest grocer, is retiring from business in about ten days.
Sprankle, who is 76, has leased
his store at 616 South Main St., to George H. and Peggy
Thompson of 294 Linden Rd., Rochester, who plan a hobby shop on the
site.
Sprankle plans an extensive trip
to the Southwest and Middle West. On his return he will occupy an
apartment in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. Edward Stiles, Holcomb.
"Around a Long While"
"I've been around a long while," Sprankle
said today, " and I figure it is time for me to do something a little
different and do it just as I want to and when I want to."
In referring to a "long while," Sprankle
means his 38 years in the grocery trade. He was associated with the Oscar
C. Frarey store, corner of North Main and Buffalo Sts. for 24 years and
has been in business alone at 616 South Main, for 14 years.
"You can say," he told a Messenger reporter,
"that I had one of the last independent groceries and that none of the
big chain organizations bothered me. I kept all of my customers."
"You can say too that I learned how to run a grocery store
from Oscar C. Frarey who was the best business
man I have ever known. '0. C.'
priced things fairly and he knew what was on his shelves. That
is a pretty good combination."
Sprankle is now cleaning stock
from his shelves and says he will be ready to close his front door by the end
of next week.
"I will be ready to go in ten days," he
reports. "The Thompsons are due to open June
1. They have been looking all over for a spot for a hobby shop and they figure
my place should be ideal."
Grocery Site For Years
For those who have known the location next to Red Jacket Park,
the change will be sharp. There has been a grocery store on the site for a
half century. The Luther Smith grocery was located here for more than three
decades. Sprankle plans an extended visit to old
scenes Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was born and spent his boyhood, and
Oklahoma City, Okla. where he worked in the dredging business in younger years
before coming to Canandaigua in the 1920s.
He has a brother, Frank, and
a sister, Mrs. Blanche Hill, in Oklahoma City,
and a brother, Howard, in Fayetteville, Ark.
"I am not going to be inactive," he explains.
"My son-in-law, Ed Stiles, has a motor
business in Holcomb and I am going lo help him all I can." Besides Mrs.
Stiles, he has a son, Kenneth, in
Washington, D.C. Mrs. Sprankle, the former Miss
Florence Kittredge, died in Dec. 1958.
