 O'BRIEN -    The funeral of Matthew T. O'Brien, of Phelps, who died on Friday, was held from St. Francis Catholic church on Monday. He was 61 years of age.  For 20 years he had been proprietor of the Phelps hotel. In his younger days he was famous locally as a baseball player. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Terrance O'Brien and was born in Clifton Springs. Practically his whole life had been spent in the community.  Survivors are his wife, a son, Paul, three daughters, Ruth, Kathryn and Elizabeth O'Brien, all of Phelps, two sisters, Miss Minnie O'Brien, of Phelps, and Mrs. Abram C. Cappon, of Canandaigua, and a brother, Joseph O'Brien, of New York City.

PHELPS SCHOOL DISTRICT MEETS

Phelps, May 5 - The annual meeting of School District No. 8 was held in the assembly room of the Phelps High School Tuesday evening. The meeting was called to order by Charlotte T. SALISBURY, president of the Board of Education. Warren H. WILCOX was chairman, Fred HELMER secretary and F. E. BENTON and P. V. KEEFE, tellers. The report of clerk and treasurer, J. Fred HELMER, were approved and the budget of $14,250 for next year's expenses, was adopted. J. W. DONNELLY and L. F. CROUCH were unanimously elected trustees to succeed themselves.

PHELPS HIGH SCHOOL HONORS ANNOUNCED
Phelps, May 6 - Miss Dorothy BENTON has been designated as valedictorian and John GRIMES as salutatorian of the graduating class of the Phelps High School. The junior prom in honor of the senior class will be held in Gibson Hall this evening.

HODGES - HELMER
 
Phelps, Aug. 31 - The marriage of Miss Kathryn HELMER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene HELMER, of Phelps, and Richard C. HODGES, of Boston, Mass., took place at 6 o'clock Monday evening at the Phelps Methodist Episcopal Church.
Rev.  Edgar W. WALLIS, pastor of the church, assisted by C. C. HODGES, of Boston, the  groom's father, performed the ceremony, in which the double ring service was  used. The church was decorated with palms and asters. The bride who was
given in  marriage by her father, was attended by her sister, Miss Gertrude HELMER, as  maid of honor and by Miss Maud HODGES, sister of the groom, and Miss Ruth FRANKLIN, of Ithaca, as bridesmaid, Maurice RECK, of Rochester, was the
groom's  attendant and John RAWLINSON and Lester ADAMS, of Phelps, were the ushers. A  short organ recital, played by Mrs. A. P. HULL, of Sayre, Pa., preceded the  ceremony, and vocal selections "I Love You Truly" and "At Dawning" were given by  Mrs. H. S. HULL, of Utica, soloist.
The bride was gowned in white satin with silver  trimmings made entrain. She wore her veil in fan effect and carried a bouquet of  the Bride roses. Her going away attire was an electric blue broadcloth suit with mole skin trimmings. Miss HELMER, the maid of honor was attired in pink organdie  and carried white asters. Miss HODGES wore a green organdie gown and carried  pink asters
and Miss FRANKLIN, carried a bouquet of purple asters, was gowned in yellow organdie. The bride's mother wore her own wedding dress, a green satin maryaleur gown. Gold pencils were the gifts from the bride to her attendants, and the groom gave tie clips to his best man and ushers.
Following the ceremony at the church a reception to about fifty relatives was held at the home of the bride's parents in Park  street, at which a four-course dinner, prepared by Mrs. B. H. WOOLSON, was  served. Mr. and Mrs. HODGES left during the evening for an automobile trip to the Thousand Islands, Adirondack mountains, Lake Champlain and George, Vermont  and New Hampshire points and a three-weeks sojourn at the HODGES summer home in Maine. The bride received her high school education in Phelps, was graduated from the Oswego State Normal School in 1912 and since then has been engaged as a  teacher at the
Phelps union and classical school.
Mr. HODGES, who is a former service man is teaching mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Guests at the wedding were from Utica, Niagara Falls, Camden, Rochester, and from points in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Montana and Connecticut. Events given in honor of the bride were a reception by Miss ROUCH to the teachers of  the high school, and parties by Mrs. E. W. WALLIS and the bride's Sunday-school  class. Mr. and Mrs.HODGES will make their permanent home at No. 124 School  street, Watertown, Mass.

WILCOX - The funeral services for Mrs. Anna E. WILCOX, whose death occurred at Phelps on Friday, were held on Tuesday.  she was born in Canandaigua 78 years ago.  She leaves two sisters, Mrs. C. H. ANDREWS and Miss FOSKETT of Canandaigua.  Interment was at Phelps.

SELDEN L. STEWART
 
Phelps, Feb. 17 - Selden L. STEWART, 80 years old, a resident of the town of Phelps for many years, died Friday night at the Thompson Memorial Hospital in  Canandaigua, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. STEWART who was a son of  Lyman and Sara VanDORN STEWART, was born at Pultneyville, on March 13th 1844.
A son Ernest of Rochester, and another son who  resides in the west are the only known surviving relatives. Funeral services  will be held from the undertaking parlors of Dauchy and Kavanaugh at 1:30  o'clock on Monday afternoon. Interment will be made in Joslyn cemetery near Oaks  Corners.

Carrie E. MAILLER - After a brief illness form heart trouble, Miss Carrie Elizabeth MAILLER died at at one o'clock on Wednesday morning (Jan 25th), at her home in Unionville at the age of 65 years.  [this s/b 75y]. Miss MAILLER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William MAILLER, was born in the town of Phelps and lived in the community practically all her life.  She was a sister to the late Dr. F. M. MAILLER and is survived by a nephew and a niece, of Elgin, Ill.  She was a member of the Phelps Presbyterian church and was highly esteemed.

Funeral services will be held at her home at Unionville on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Charles J. WOOD officiating.  burial will be made in Rest Haven cemetery.

 Phelps Nov. 3-   The body of Frank Hawks Brush, a former resident of this place, who died Sunday in New York, was brought here today for burial in Rest Haven Cemetery.    He at one time conducted a business here and left Phelps fifty-five years ago.

Junius Farm Sold 
Phelps, Oct. 9 - The 300-acre farm, known as the William H. Newton Place in the Town of Junius, east of here, and lately owned by Charles COURTWRIGHT of  Phelps, has been sold to Frank A. BUMP, tenant on the place for several seasons.  The consideration is reported as $12,000.

Twelve Children Of Geo. Denniston Hold Reunion
 
Raising thirteen children to an adult age is such an unusual accomplishment that a family reunion which took place in the town of
Phelps, last Sunday, attracts attention.  Twelve sons and daughters of George H. and the late Lulu Denniston gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Denniston, north of the village of Phelps, that day, for the purpose of renewing family ties. The 13th member of the family, Mrs. Robert Ritz, of Gowanda, was unable to be present because of illness.

JOSEPH P. HICKS -  Phelps - Joseph P. HICKS, 65 died Monday (Jan. 31, 1944) after a long illness. He was born in Phelps on Sept. 29, 1878, where he has lived the greater part of his life.
A private funeral service will be held in the home  Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Charles DAYTON officiating. Burial in Resthaven Cemetery, Phelps.

Besides her husband Fred Mackey, she leaves a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Baker, and a granddaughter, Janna Backus, both of Rochester, and one
sister, Mrs. Everett Richardson, of Clifton Springs.

OBITUARIES     Mrs. Fred Mackey      

RUSHVILLE -   Funeral services for Mrs. Laura VanGelder Mackey, 82, of Middlesex RD 1, was held this afternoon at the Ness Funeral Chapel in Rushville, Rev. Oliver Gesell, retired Evangelical pastor officiating.
Burial was in Riverview Cemetery (Phelps, NY). Mrs. Mackey died Friday in Thompson Hospital, Canandaigua.   She was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Bell Jackson.
Survivors are her husband Fred, a son, David VanGelder, of Cheshire, England, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Mervin Ethel Baker, of Rochester.

Penn Yan -Clifton Springs Men Are Killed in One-Car Crash Near Phelps; Woman Hurt  

Phelps – A one-car crash, at about 4 a.m. yesterday on County Road 25, resulted in the death of two men and injury to a woman.  The vehicle left the highway and broke into two pieces after striking a tree.  William F. Phillips, 32, of 205 Keukn St., Penn Yan, the driver, and Donald V. Mays, 25, of McBurney Road, Clifton Springs RD, a passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene by County Coroner Dr. Charles E. Bathrick, of Canandaigua.    Mr. Phillips suffered a neck fracture; Mr. Mays had multiple head injuries.  

Sandra L. Conley, 23, of Oaks Corners, another passenger, is reported in fair condition today at Clifton Springs Hospital .  She suffered a leg fracture and multiple cuts of the head, face and body. Ontario County investigators said the vehicle was going east on County Road 25 when it failed to make a curve at the intersection of County Road 25 and the McBurney Road .  The car skidded 228 feet, hit the tree on the right side of the highway and broke in two.  The front of the vehicle continued on down the road for about 198 feet.  All three occupants of the car were thrown from the vehicle, investigators added.  The death of Mr. Phillips and Mr. Mays resulted in a total of 41 traffic fatalities in the county for 1969 (sic) as compared to 29 a year ago at this time.  Investigators included Under-Sherriff Ray Morrow, Chief Deputy Elwood Cox, and County Det. Anthony Cecero.  

Mr. Phillips, a Korean War Veteran, had lived in Penn Yan for about five years.  He was shop foreman for the G. W. Lisk Co. of Clifton Springs.  He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Phillips, with whom he lived; two sons, Daniel of Penn Yan, and Michael of Washington; a daughter, Julianne of Washington; a brother Robert of Rochester; and four sisters, Mrs. William (Alice) Pawling of Wellsville; Mrs. Lloyd (Caroline) Lyke of Plattsburg; Mrs. James (Sharon) Depew of Penn Yan; and Mrs. Donald (Susan) Mays of Clifton Springs.  Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Weldon Funeral Home, Penn Yan.  A service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow.  Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery , Hammondsport.  

Mr. Mays’ survivors include his wife, Sue Phillips Mays; his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Mays of Clifton Springs; two brothers, Terrence of Clifton Springs and Robert in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Vietnam; a sister, Linda Susan, at home; his grandmother, Mrs. Zelma Meeker of Bath, grandfather, B. O. Bunage of Penn Yan, several aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews.  Mr. Mays graduated from Clifton Springs High School in 1961 and spend five years in the Navy.  He was a lab technician at G. W. Lisk.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church , Clifton Springs.  Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Weld Funeral Home, 26 W. Main St .  Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Allen Wallenburg of the First Presbyterian Church, Penn Yan, and the Rev. Albert Kamm, pastor of the Baptist Church , will officiate.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery , Plainsville. (Phelps)

Obituary – Rexford (Rex) W. Mays  

CLIFTON SPRINGS – Rexford (Rex) W. Mays, 60, of McBurney Road , died unexpectedly yesterday in the Clifton Springs Hospital Mr. Mays, a native of Pennsylvania , lived in the Clifton Springs area for more than 25 years and had been an employee of the Ontario Telephone Co. for as many years.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church , the Garoga Lodge No. 303 F&AM, and the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Association.  He has served as a village trustee.  He is survived by his wife, Beulah Truax Mays, one daughter, Susan, at home; two sons, Terrance of Clifton Springs and Chief Warrant Officer Robert of Newport, R. I.; six grandchildren, his mother, Mrs. Zelma Meeker of Bath, two brothers, Donald Mays of Bath and Vance Mays of Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Newton Simons Jr., of Pennsylvania, and several nieces and nephews.  Friends may call at the West Funeral Home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.   Masonic services will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. tonight.  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the

OBITUARIES  -  Fred A. Mackey
Fred A. Mackey, East Lake Road, Vine Valley, died yesterday at Thompson Hospital Nursing Home after a long illness. He was 97.
Born in Michigan, Mr. Mackey lived most of his life in the Vine Valley area. He was a member of the Vine Valley Methodist Church, and the Clifton Springs Odd Fellows.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Mervin Ethel Baker of Rochester, two grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the John C. Johnson Funeral Home in Canandaigua tonight where a funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Clifton Springs.

Phelps, NY-Nina M McIntyre, 66, of White Rd. Phelps, died yesterday in her home after a short illness.  Friends may call at the Dewey Funeral Home tomorrow from 2-4&7-9 PM.  Private services will be Wednesday at 2PM with the Rev. Leonard MacKney officiating.  Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery at the convenience of the family.  [Sunday Mar. 20,1977]  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church Organ Fund.
Mrs. McIntyre was the daughter of the late Leroy and Mary Balfor Bowen. She is survived by her husband, Roger and one son, Paul; one daughter, Mrs. Daniel [Carol] White, all of Phelps;2 brothers, Lawrence Bowen of Phelps, and Earl Bowen of Seneca Falls; 3 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Phelps, NY-  Mrs. Mary A. Bowen, 82, of 67 Clifton Street, died Monday Dec. 14,at Clifton Springs Hospital after a long illness.
Friends may call from 2-4,7-9 pm Tuesday at Dewey Funeral Home where there will be an Eastern Star Service at 7 PM.
The funeral will be at 2 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Gary Hakes, pastor of the United Church of Phelps, will officiate. Burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to Phelps Ambulance Fund or United Church of Phelps.
Mrs. Bowen was born June 3, 1905 in Newark, NY, daughter of Albert and Glaydas (CROFORD) WEISGEARVER. She was a member of Eastern Star Chapt. 425.
Surviving are her husband, Lawrence; 4 daughters, Vivian McIntyre, Rosalie Matoon, Betty Bowen, all of Phelps, and Janet Beasley of Waterloo; one son, Robert of California;14 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Hubert[Helen] McStravic of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Richard.

Phelps, NY-Roger E. McIntyre,71, of 1399 White Rd, Phelps, died Sunday, January 31, 1988 at Clifton Springs Hostipal after an extended illness.
A memorial service will be held at 3 PM Tuesday at United Church of Phelps, NY with the Rev. Gary Hakes officiating. Burial will be at the connivance of the family.
Mr. McIntyre attended Phelps Union & Classical School. He was a Veteran of WW II , a former member of the Phelps Lions Club and member of Phelps Baptist Church. He was a self-employed building contractor in this area for 31 years. He was born August 3,1916 in Stanley, NY, son of Earl and Anna SWARTHOUT McINTYRE.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Nina [BOWEN]; 2 brothers & 3 sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Vivian; one son, Paul of Seneca Castle; one daughter, Annette CONNOLLY of Adams, NY; a stepson, David BREYLA of Wilmington, DE.; 9 Grandchildren; one brother, Robert of California;2 sisters; Anna MOLLENKOPH of Phelps and Doris SANFORD of Clifton Springs, NY; and several nieces and nephews.  
Memorial contributions may be made to the Phelps Ambulance Service or the United Church of Phelps.

Lawrence Bowen
Phelps, NY-  Phelps resident Lawrence Bowen of 67 Clifton Street died yesterday, July 21, after a long illness. He was 86.
Mr. Bowen was born February 21, 1905 in Wellsboro, PA, the son of Leroy and Mary BALFOR BOWEN. He was employed for 54 years at Caves Lumber Comp., retiring in 1975.  Since 1928 he was a member of Sincerity Lodge 200 F & AM and for many years was a member of the Fellowcraft Team. He was a former member of the Buckhorn Club in Phelps and the last living member of the Empire Fire Company.
Surviving are three daughters; Vivian McINTYRE, Rosalie MATOON, and Betty BOWEN ,all of Phelps; a son, Robert of California; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Friends may call tomorrow from 2-4&7-9 PM at the Dewey Funeral Home,81 E. Main Street, Phelps, NY; where Masonic Service will be held tomorrow at 6:30PM. Services will be held Wednesday at 10AM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Phelps, NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Phelps Ambulance Fund.

PHELPS - Lois F. Wing, 76, of 11 Exchange St., loving wife, mother and grandmother, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 at her home after a long and courageous battle.
Friends called Friday, Feb. 28 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services were Saturday, March 1 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Clifton Springs, with the Rev. Thomas Gramley officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Finger Lakes Visiting Nurse Service or Ontario-Yates Hospice at 756 Pre-emption Rd., Geneva, 14456.
Mrs. Wing was born March 5, 1926, in Stafford, the daughter of the late Merrill and Harriett Miner Weller. She retired from G.W. Lisk of Clifton Springs after 39 years of faithful service. She was also a member of the Geneva Friendship squares and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Clifton Springs.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, John Wing; daughter, Diane (Jack) Allen of Phelps; son, Donald (Cyndi) Wing of Waterloo; grandchildren, Suzanne (Michael) Schaben of Florida, Robyn (Steven) Schulz of Kentucky, Jon (Francis) Allen of Phelps, Donald Chad Wing, Mykel Wing and Steven Wing of Waterloo; sister, Helen (Paul) Smith of Batavia; brothers, Donald Weller of Batavia, Merrill (Doris) Weller of Batavia, Ken (May) Weller of Florida and Robert (Vi) Weller of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Margarite Rumsey; and grandson, Richard Allen.

PHELPS -  John E. Wing, of Exchange Street, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Saturday (Jan. 27, 2007) at the Huntington Nursing Home in Waterloo.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 30) at the Cheney Funeral Home, 70 Main St., Phelps. Funeral services will be at 11
a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 31) at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery with full military honors.
It is suggested that contributions be made in his memory to Huntington Living Center, East Main Street, Waterloo 13165.
John was born May 30, 1927, in Medina, the son of the late John and Mary Wing. He was a Navy veteran, proudly serving in the Navy deployed to the Pacific in 1945. 

He was the loving husband of Lois Wing of Stafford, for 56 years until her death in 2003. After graduation from college he located in Phelps and worked for the Phelps Electric Co. In 1982 he and his son, Donald, started the Wing Service Co., where his knowledge and work ethics were appreciated by all of his faithful customers. He was a member of the Phelps American Legion Post 457 and a member of the Geneva Friendship
Squares and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Clifton Springs.
He is survived by his son, Donald (Cyndi) of Waterloo; daughter, Diane (Jack) Allen of Phelps; grandchildren, Suzanne (Mike) Schaben and Robyn
(Steven) Schulz,
both of Louisville, Ky., Jon (Frances) Allen of Geneva, Donald Chad Wing, Mykel Wing and Steven Wing of Waterloo;
great-grandchildren, Donald John and Jaclyn Schulz; and his loving nurse, Heather Morrison.
He was predeceased by his grandson, Richard Allen; and granddaughter, Hope Wing.
