Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Buckelew Wed 50 Years
Open
House Sunday 1956 - EAST BLOOMFIELD
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur G. Buckelew will observe their 50th
wedding anniversary Sunday, November 4. They
will receive their friends at an open house in their home in Main Street from 2
to 9.
A graduate of the Moler Barber college in New York City in 1903,
Mr. Buckelew opened a shop in the village of Mendon, joined the
Presbyterian Church, and there he met Miss Augusta Sheeler, who became
his bride Sunday morning November 4, 1906, at the close of the regular worship
service of the church. Rev. J. B. Fennell, pastor of the church, heard
the marriage vows before the congregation.
After a honeymoon in New York City they set up house on one of the Buckelew farms in the town of Bristol. They soon bought an adjoining farm and by 1912 they had one of the most modern homes of the time, which included cold running water, furnace and bathroom. These were quite as unusual at that time as was their new Ford.
The farming consisted primarily of the raising of raspberries
and sheep. One year from six acres of berries they sold 4,400 pounds of dried
fruit. The sheep were of the Oxford breed and were sired by rams imported from
Canada. Mr. Buckelew became vice president of the American Oxford Down Record
Association. For a number of years he exhibited at a series of county fairs, the
state fair, Erie county fair in Penn., and at Columbus, Ohio.
He was a judge in the sheep competitions at Warsaw, Perry Hornell, and
Batavia fairs.
In 1921 Mr. and Mrs. Buckelew and their daughters moved
to Holcomb where for 26 years he engaged in the poultry business. Besides
producing and selling eggs he conducted a hatchery, raising single comb white
Leghorn chicks. During this same period he worked as an apiarist on the side.
Eight years ago he sold the poultry business to his son in law, DeWitt Mowry.
He purchased an up to date saw sharpening outfit and continues in the business
of sharpening saws and shears at his residence.
Both Mr. and
Mrs. Buckelew are members of the First Congregational church in East
Bloomfield, where he was a deacon for 27 years. He has also served as a trustee
member of the church committee, secretary and assistant superintendent of the
Sunday school. Mrs. Buckelew was
treasurer of the Missionary Society for 20 years. She has also served as
treasurer of the Bloomfield chapter, WCTU since 1929. She has been a member of
Home Bureau since its organization in this community and at present belongs to
the East Bloomfield Day Unit.
The couple has four daughters, Mrs. George Gifford of
Stanley, Mrs. DeWitt Mowry of Holcomb, Mrs. Ralph J. Harris of
Penn Yan, and Mrs. Charles Wynand of Holcomb, who are planning the
celebration. Also helping to celebrate the occasion will be their six
grandchildren, one great grandson, Mrs. Buckelew's sister, Miss Mary Sheeler of
Holcomb, and her brother George Sheeler, of Mendon, and Mr. Buckelew's
sister, Mrs. Wilbur Ashley, Honeoye.
