ELWELL - ENGERT

Dyer Elwell and Eleanor Reynolds had the following child:

Elinor² Elwell She married Sibley Ebenezer Nott February 20, 1868.

Sibley Ebenezer Nott was born Canandaigua, New York October 07, 1843. Sibley was the son of Ebenezer Sumner Nott and Jerusha Brown. He married Marie Turner 1881. Sibley died July 22, 1928 Cheshire, New York, at 84 years of age.

CHESHIRE - Grief spread over the community on Sunday morning at the death of Sibley E. Nott, aged Civil War Veteran. Although his health had been failing the past year, his death was sudden as he had been around as usual, and had been to the general store with his basket on his arm for groceries as had been his custom for many years.

He was the last surviving member in this place of the Charles R. Lilly Post GAR. He was born on October 7, 1843 in a log house on the road going West from the late John L. Curtis place. He enlisted in the war of the Rebellion on December 14, 1863 serving in Company H 4th Heavy Artillery, and was wounded in the arm in the campaign on April 2, 1865. On August 9 he received his discharge owing to his injury.

He was well known as a teacher of rural schools, was Postmaster here for several years, and Justice of the Peace for several terms. Mr. Nott was married twice, having married Miss Eleanor Elwell who passed away leaving him with three small children.

He later married Miss Marie Turner who died in 1908. He leaves one son and one daughter, Charles Nott, West Lake Road, and Mrs. James Underwood, Middlesex, one sister, Mrs. Minnie Ketchum of Rochester. A daughter, Mrs. Elmer Outhouse died a little over a year ago.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 PM. Interment at Pine Bank Cemetery. Six grandsons acted as bearers. A quartet composed of Judge and Mrs. Robert F. Thompson, Gordon L. Holcomb of Canandaigua, and Mrs. John Curtis sang.

Sibley E. Nott, a well known veteran of the Civil War, died at his home in Cheshire on Sunday morning, aged 84 years. Mr. Nott was a much esteemed citizen and had formerly held the office of Justice of the Peace for a number of years.

He enlisted at Canandaigua on Dec. 14, 1863, in Co. H. 4th NY Heavy Artillery and was wounded at the battle of Five Forks on April 2, 1865, receiving his discharge on August 18 of that year.

He leaves a son, Charles Nott residing on the west shore of Canandaigua lake, and a daughter, Mrs. Minnie Underwood of Middlesex, besides several grandchildren. Another daughter, Mrs. Elmer J. Outhouse, died some months ago.

The funeral was held from the church in Cheshire yesterday afternoon, with Rev. George E. Finlay of the Baptist church officiating. Gordon L. Holcomb, Mrs. John Curtis and Justice and Mrs. Robert F. Thompson sang. Burial was in Pine Bank cemetery at Cheshire. A firing squad of eight men from the American Legion in charge of Commander Thomas Kennedy fired a volley at the grave and Gordon L. Holcomb Sr. sounded Taps.

Charles F.¹ Engert was born in Lincoln, Wayne Co., New York February 1871. Charles died May 05, 1947 Victor, New York, at 76 years of age. He married Emma Isler 1893. Emma was born in Wayneport, Wayne Co., New York April 18, 1873. Her grave marker shows birth year as 1872. Emma was the daughter of Benjamin Isler and Elizabeth Bowman. Emma died January 02, 1936 Victor, New York, at 62 years of age.

Mrs. Emma Engert, wife of Charles Engert, passed away at her home here on Thursday, January 2, 1936.

Besides her husband she is survived by a brother, Fred Isler of Rochester, five daughters, Clara Brizee, and Edna Anderson of Fairport, Hattie and Esther Engert of Victor, and Ethel Engert of Macedon, three sons, Fred of Pittsford, Charles of Victor, and George of E. Rochester, and several grandchildren. Interment in Boughton Hill.

He was a resident of Macedon. His father was listed as William S. Brizee, and mother, Mary E Dake. Witnessed by Elizabeth C. Gaylord and W. T. Curtice.

Charles Engert Jr., of Boughton Hill, and Miss Louise Mahnke of Rochester, were united in marriage in Rochester on Wed., November 11th. They were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Brizee of Victor, brother in law and sister of the groom.

Following the ceremony a wedding dinner was served by Mrs. Alice Graham at 108 Silver Street, Rochester. Mr. and Mrs. Engert will make their home at 190 Fourth Street in Rochester.

Hattie Emma Engert was born Canandaigua, New York September 26, 1904.^[i] Hattie died March 18, 1911 Canandaigua, New York, at 6 years of age. [i]. Canandaigua City Clerk office record number 3061

Emma Engert, the seven year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Engert, Phelps Street, died at the Memorial Hospital Annex on Saturday night of Scarlet fever. The child who had been dangerously ill for some time, was taken to the hospital about twenty four hours before her death. Another child from the Engert family was taken to the hospital on Monday morning suffering from the same disease.

John George² Engert was born in Lincoln, New York September 09, 1856. Death record states he was born in Lincoln, NY. John died October 14, 1941 Canandaigua, New York, at 85 years of age.^[i][i]. Canandaigua City Clerk office death record number 145 on Page 112. The informant on the record was W. Thomas Sprentall at 175 Buffalo Street. His wife's name is given as Louise Leiston, and he was to be buried at Woodlawn.

OBITUARY ENGERT

John G. Engert, 85, of 175 Buffalo Street, died Tuesday morning in a Canandaigua, NY Health Home after a lingering illness. Born in Rochester he had been a resident of Canandaigua for 60 years. For many years he was foreman of the hop yards.

Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. John M. Flood, Miss Lena I., Mrs. Edward T. Hanley, Canandaigua, and Mrs. Louise Ebert, Buffalo, sister, Mrs. Frank Clevenger, Ont., and a brother Charles of Victor. His body was interred 1941 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery.

He married Louise Leiston 1880. Louise was born New York January 05, 1862. Louise was the daughter of Charles Leiston and Fredricka Paull . Louise died November 15, 1916 Canandaigua, New York, at 54 years of age.^[ii] [ii]. Canandaigua City clerk office death record number 155 on Page 78. Informant was listed as Gurney Engert, of Canandaigua.

ENGERT - The death of Mrs. John Engert, aged 54 years, occurred at her home on Buffalo Street on Wednesday morning. Death was due to apoplexy.

She leaves her husband, one son and five daughters, Gurney, Lena, and Mayme Engert, Mrs. John Flood, Mrs. William Carroll, all of Canandaigua, Mrs. Harry Sprentell of Wayland, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Leiston of Penfield, also three sisters, Mrs. L. C. Foreman of Pittsford, Mrs. John Wall and Mrs. Frank Keil of Penfield. Rev. Herbert L. Gaylord will officiate this PM. Interment in Woodlawn.

Clara M. Engert was born Canandaigua, New York May 30, 1882. Clara died 1944 at 62 years of age. She married John M. Flood Canandaigua, New York, August 12, 1902.

A Double Wedding

At St. Mary's church on Tuesday morning, Rev. James T. Dougherty, the pastor, united in marriage John M. Flood and Miss Clara M. Engert, and James T. Flood and Miss Mary O'Brien. The wedding was a complete surprise to the friends of the young people. Mr. and Mrs. James T. Flood will reside in Syracuse.

Cora Freda Engert was born January 1887. She married William Patrick Carroll Canandaigua, New York, April 20, 1908.

Rev. J. T. Dougherty Unites in Marriage William Carroll and Cora F. Engert

On Tuesday afternoon at 3 PM Rev. J. T. Dougherty united in marriage, Miss Cora Freda Engert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Engert, of Buffalo Street, and William Patrick Carroll, son of Mrs. Patrick Carroll, Charlotte Street.

The bride and groom were attended by the groom's sister, Miss Jennie Carroll, and Christopher Russell, of Boston, Mass. The bride wore a traveling costume of blue and carried a white prayer book. Her bridesmaid wore a tan suit and her flowers were pink carnations.

Mr. and Mrs. Carroll left at once for their wedding journey. Upon their return they will reside on Lisk Avenue. Mr. Carroll is employed in the New York Central freight office.

Marguerite L. Engert was born Canandaigua, New York June 22, 1889. Marguerite died February 25, 1924 Canandaigua, New York, at 34 years of age.

ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT and CHRONICLE February 27, 1924

WOMAN DIES in CANANDAIGUA of SLEEPY SICKNESS

Canandaigua February 26, Lethargia encephalitis, or sleepy sickness last night caused the death of Mrs. Margurite Engert Sprentall, 31 years old. She had been ill for two weeks. Mrs. Sprentall was the wife of Harry B. Sprentall, West Gibson Street. Mrs. Sprentall became ill about two weeks ago.

Mrs. Sprentall is survived by her husband, three sons, Robert, Thomas, and John Sprentall, her father John Engert, one brother, Gurney G. Engert, and four sisters, Mrs. John Flood, Mrs. Edward Hanley, and Miss Lena Engert, all of Canandaigua, and Mrs. William Carroll of Geneva.

Funeral services will be held from the home Thursday afternoon. Rev. Herbert L. Gaylord of St. John's Episcopal Church officiated. Burial will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery. Her body was interred 1924 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery

She married Harry Burton Sprentall Canandaigua, New York, August 26, 1912.

ENGERT SPRENTALL

The marriage of Harry Sprentall to Miss Marguerite Engert took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Engert, Buffalo Street, Monday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. J. Clausen of New York, a former rector of St. John's church

The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Mayme Engert, and the groom by his brother, Cortland Sprentall. Mr. and Mrs. Sprentall departed for a trip to Toronto and the Thousand Islands, and upon their return will reside in Canandaigua.

Harry Burton Sprentall was born in Brighton, Canada May 29, 1884. Harry was the son of Robert Sprentall and Ellen Kenney. Harry died July 24, 1928 Canandaigua, New York, at 44 years of age.^[i] [i]. Canandaigua City Clerk Office record number 116, informant Guerney G. Engert.

SPRENTALL - The death of Harry Sprentall, aged 44 years occurred on Monday following a long illness.

He is survived by three sons, Robert, Thomas, and Jack Sprentall, three brothers and two sisters, residing in Canada. Mr. Sprentall's wife, who before her marriage was Miss Marguerite Engert, died four years ago. Private funeral services were held at the home of John Engert with interment at Woodlawn.

Harry Sprentall, aged 44 years, of this city, died at Memorial Hospital yesterday afternoon following a six weeks' illness.

He is survived by three sons, Robert, Thomas and Jack Sprentall, three brothers and two sisters, all residing in Canada, Marshall of Bridgeburg, Frank of Sterling, George of Trenton, Mrs. Simpson of Brighton, and Mrs. Alfred Rittorage of Toronto.

Mr. Sprentall's wife who was before her marriage, Miss Marguerite Engert of this city, died four years ago. Private funeral services will be held from the home of John Engert tomorrow afternoon. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The marriage of Edward Thomas Hanley and Miss Mame Paull Engert, daughter of John G. Engert, took place at St. Mary's rectory on Monday morning at 7 30 o'clock. Rev. M. B. Groden performed the ceremony.

The bride was gowned in dark blue velvet with hat to match, and wore a corsage bouquet of violets. Mr. and Mrs. James F. Brooker were the attendants. Mrs. Brooker wore black velvet with hat to match. Her flowers were violets. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Hanley, Bristol Street. Mr. and Mrs. Hanley will reside in Canandaigua, after a trip to New York City.

Edward was born Canandaigua, New York August 01, 1893. Edward was the son of William E. Hanley and Matilda Josephine Hamilton. Edward died July 11, 1965 Canandaigua, New York, at 71 years of age.

Mrs. Edward T. Hanley has returned to her home on Greig Terrace after several days visit with Miss Mayme Lee Ogden in Washington, D. C. Miss Ogden, a former local artist, has many friends here who will be interested to learn that she is now chief of design at the Pentagon.

Myrtie R. Engert was born November 27, 1894. Myrtie died October 10, 1898 Canandaigua, New York, at 3 years of age. City Clerk office record number 1262.

INGERT - At Canandaigua, October 10, 1898, Myrtie R. Ingert, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ingert. Her body was interred 1898 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery.

Gurney Grey³ Engert was born Farmington, New York October 02, 1880. Gurney died March 22, 1932 Canandaigua, New York, at 51 years of age.^[i] [i]. Canandaigua City clerk office record number 53 on Page 236, states he was married to Elizabeth O'Keefe, and that she was the informant living at 110 Ontario Street.

Gurney G. Engert for many years a well known and highly respected business man of this city died at Memorial Hospital Monday night following a several weeks illness.

Mr. Engert was born in Canandaigua 51 years ago and spent his entire life here. Two years ago he bought the tobacco business of Howard L. Herendeen, which he had since conducted. Prior to that time he was for several years the manager of Endicott Johnson shoe store in this city.

Mr. Engert is survived by his wife, Elizabeth O'Keefe Engert, a son George G. his father John G. Engert, four sisters, Mrs. John Flood, Mrs. Edward T. Hanley, and Miss Lena Engert, all of this city, and Mrs. William Carroll of Geneva. Private services will be held in Ontario Street home, Friday PM at 2 30 o'clock, Rev. Herbert L. Gaylord of St. John's church officiating. Interment at Calvary Cemetery.

He married Elizabeth O'Keefe Canandaigua, New York, June 28, 1909.^[ii] [ii]. A copy of the Church record is found on PG 1M in the book, A Tree Trunk.

WEDDING ENGERT - O'KEEFE

At 3 45 at the rectory, Gurney G. Engert and Miss Elizabeth O'keefe were married. The bride was attended by her cousin, Miss Anna Russell, of Shortsville, and Albert Foreman, of Pittsford, was the groom's attendant.

The bride's dress was white batiate trimmed with valenciences. She carried bride roses. Her attendant was gowned in white embroidered mull over blue and carried lilies of the valley. Following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick O'Keefe, Ontario Street. They will reside in Canandaigua.

ENGERT - Funeral services for John Francis Engert aged 13 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guerney G. Engert, Ontario Street, whose death occurred at Memorial Hospital on Friday after a short illness with encephalitis, were held at St. Mary's Church on Monday morning. Besides his parents he leaves a brother George.

Area Servicemen Return to Civilian Life Cpl. George G. Engert has received his honorable discharge from the Army at Fort Dix, NJ, after three years service, and is with his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Engert, Atwater Place.

He was a radio operator with the Signal Air Warning Battalion and served in Austrailia, New Guinea, and on Leyte and Luzon in the Phillipines with the 5th and 13th Air Forces.
