Patrick Hamilton drops dead in cellar at his home.
This
community was greatly shocked on Thursday night to learn of the sudden death of Patrick
Hamilton, one of the best known and most highly esteemed residents of this
vicinity, which occurred at his home in Littleville at about 7 30 o'clock that
evening.
Mr.
Hamilton had gone into the cellar at his home with his nephew to sprout
potatoes and was holding a lamp in his hand. Turning quickly to his companion he
complained of feeling feint and handed the lamp to him. Without further warning
he reeled and fell dead in his nephews arms. His death was attributed to heart
failure. He had been in feeble health for the
past three weeks.
Patrick Hamilton was born in County Derry, Ireland, 65 years ago. While still a resident of that country he was united in marriage to Miss Magaret Hessen, a resident of his native county. Forty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton came to the United States to make their home and take up residence in Geneva, this state.
The
demise of his companion followed and he was again married twenty seven years ago
to Miss Ellen Dargon, of Ovid, who still survives him, but is in feeble
health and fears are expressed that she will be unable to withstand the shock of
his sudden death.
The deceased had been a resident of Littleville for the past thirty years, during which time he was engaged in flagging at the NY Central Railroad crossing. His untiring efforts to please his employers won for him the respect of every employee and official who knew him. Likewise he was esteemed and respected by every acquaintance. It has been the writer's privilege for several years to possess his friendship and we have never yet failed to get a kindly greeting and a pleasant smile from him.
His
many excellent traits and kindly ways will long be remembered by his wide circle
of friends. Besides his wife he leaves one son, John Hamilton, of Auburn,
and two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Quinn of Auburn, and Mrs. William
Hanley, of Canandaigua, also ten grandchildren.
The
funeral services will be held from St. Dominic's church, of which Mr.
Hamilton was a devoted member, this Friday morning at 8 30 o'clock, and a
Solemn High Mass will be celebrated by Father Cosgrove, of Geneva, and will be
assisted by Fathers O'Hanlon and Ryan of Clifton Springs. Interment will
be in the Catholic Cemetery in Geneva.
He married twice. He married Margaret Hassan County Derry Desertmartin Irel, April 22, 1867.
Patrick
Hamilton and Margaret Hassin were from Kilrea Parish and witnesses of their
wedding are listed as John and Mary McGuckin. Married by Rev. Mooney, Parrish of
Desermartin, County Derry, Ireland.

living at 145 Pleasant Street.

Death Record at Canandaigua City Clerk office on Page 164, Registration number
608, gave her name as Helen Dorgan, aged about 70. It also showed her to be a
widow. The informant was Cornelius Breen the undertaker. It stipulated that she
was to be buried in Geneva. on July 30, 1913.
Obituary in the Ontario County Journal on July 30, 1913 stated she died
at Canandaigua Memorial Hospital aged 70 years.
Formerly
a resident of Shortsville until three years ago when she came to Canandaigua to
make her home with her step daughter, Mrs. William Hanley.
Survived
by Mrs. Elizabeth Quinn of Rochester, and by a step son John Hamilton of
Auburn. Funeral service from the Hanley home on Bristol Street. Body will be
taken by train to Geneva for interment at St. Patrick Cemetery.

Ellen
Dorgan, widow of Patrick Hamilton died at the Canandaigua Hospital
Monday morning, following an illness of several months, aged 70 years.
She was formerly a resident of Shortsville until about three years ago
when she came to Canandaigua to make her home with her step daughter, Mrs.
William Hanley.
She
is survived by another step daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Quinn of Rochester,
and a step son John Hamilton of Auburn. The funeral will take place from
the residence of Mrs. Hanley on Bristol Street this Wednesday at 8:30 AM,
and St. Mary's at 9. The body will be taken to Geneva on 10:20 AM train for
interment at St. Patrick's.

The
death of Mrs. Ellen Hamilton at the age of 70 years, occurred last night
at the Canandaigua Hospital where she has been under treatment for the past
several months. Mrs. Hamilton was the widow of Patrick Hamilton,
formerly a resident of Shortsville, and resided at that place until about three
years ago when she came to this place to live with here step daughter, Mrs.
William E. Hanley of Bristol Street.
Mrs.
Hamilton leaves besides Mrs. Hanley, another step daughter, Mrs.
Elizabeth Quinn, of Rochester, and a stepson, John Hamilton of
Auburn. The remains will be taken
to Geneva for the interment after the funeral from the mortuary room of Ahrens
and Breen Wednesday morning.

Mrs.
Cornelius Breen died suddenly at her home in the town of Hopewell on Sunday,
her death resulting from heart disease. A husband and three children, also her
parents Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Hamilton, of Littleville, survive.

wife of Cornelius Breen, of Lewis Station, died suddenly on Sunday, after
only a few hours illness from heart trouble, aged 35 years. She leaves a husband and three small children. The interment was at
Canandaigua on Tuesday. Mrs. Breen attended St. Theresa's church here and
was highly respected by all.

Cornelius Breen of the firm of Ahrens and Breen, and Miss Gertrude Fitzgerald, of Buffalo, were married in St. Joseph's Cathedral at Buffalo, on Tuesday morning, at 11 30. A reception was held at the home of the bride's parents after the ceremony. Mr., and Mrs. Breen are taking a western trip and upon their return will reside in this village.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning from St. Mary's Church in this city
for Cornelius Breen, 67, well known
businessman and funeral director, who died at his home on Washington Street,
Monday night following a long period of failing health. Interment at Calvary.
Born
in Hopewell March 1, 1870, Mr. Breen had been a resident of this county
during his entire lifetime. He served in his earlier years as an attendant at
Brigham Hall and Willard State Hospital, and later completed a course in
Renouard school of embalming in New York. Following this he entered into
partnership with Charles F. Ahrens in this city where he was connected at
the time of his death.
He
was an active member of St. Mary's Church in this city and of it's auxiliary
organizations. He was also active in K of C circles having served for three
terms as Grand Knight of Canandaigua Council. He also served as president of the
K of C building association, and
was a director of NYS Funeral Directors.
He
leaves his wife, three sons, and two daughters, Jeremiah, of Washington, Leo
H., Edward M., Mrs. James P. Coyne, and Miss Dorothy Breen, all of
Canandaigua, also two sisters and two brothers.
His
body was
interred 1937 Canandaigua, New York, Calvary Cemetery.

William E. Hanley, Canandaigua, Mrs. Matilda Hamilton Hanley, wife of
William E. Hanley and mother of Edward T. Hanley, chairman of the
Ontario County Board of Supervisors, died here yesterday in her home, 16 Greig
Ter.
She was born in Geneva, daughter of Patrick and Mary Hasson Hamilton, but had been a resident of Canandaigua since her marriage in 1890. Surviving are four sons, Edward T., Albert F., and R. Milton Hanley, Canandaigua, and Walter H. Hanley, Ilion, also one sister, Mrs. Arthur Watts, Canandaigua, and a brother, John P. Hamilton, Philadelphia.
Funeral will be at 9 AM tomorrow in St. Mary's Church, with
burial in Calvary Cemetery. Her
body was
interred 1941 Canandaigua, New York, Calvary Cemetery.

82 Dies in City Member of well known family Passes
William E. Hanley 82, former merchant, and member of one of Canandaigua's well known families died at his home, 16 Greig Terrace, Monday night after a long period of ill health, Mr. Hanley, incapacitated by two paralytic strokes, had withdrawn in recent years from active business life which he had known for fully a half century in Canandaigua. Sunday his condition became more serious and despite careful medical attention he failed rapidly.
Funeral services for Mr. Hanley were held Thursday morning from the Kennedy funeral chapel and from St. Mary's Church. Burial was made in Calvary Cemetery. He was a lifelong attendant and member of St. Mary's.
Mr. Hanley was the father of County Treasurer, Edward T. Hanley, of Albert F. Hanley, and Robert Milton Hanley, all well known Canandaigua residents, and of Walter H. Hanley, of Ilion. Another son, William E. Jr. died in 1931. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Lillian Ragan of Jersey City, NJ. There are ten grandchildren in the family.
Mr. Hanley was born in Canandaigua on November 30, 1866, the son of John and Elizabeth Madden Hanley. His parents were then living on Pleasant Street, a quiet tree lined thoroughfare in that post Civil War day. The neighbors were the Burke and Spencer families, who like the Hanley's were long on Children and short on financial means.
After his formal schooling had closed, Mr. Hanley journeyed westward to Chicago where he spent a year in the employ of a wholesale grocery house. Returning to Canandaigua he went to work for the late W. A. Husbands who had a meat market where Emma M Finley store is today on Main Street.
In 1904 Mr. Hanley formed a partnership with Mr. Husbands, and the late Howard J. Moore. The trio operated two markets, the Husband market and the People's Cash Market which is located where Clement's restaurant is today. This was a comparatively short lived partnership. In 1907 Mr. Hanley withdrew and opened a market of his own in Phoenix Street. After three years of operation here he came back to the familiar scene of the People's Market and went into business here.
In 1913 he disposed of his holdings here to the late H. O. Park. His next business operation was on Bristol Street, where he had one of the community's best known markets for almost 15 years. He left Bristol Street in 1927 and shifted his activity to Shortsville where he was associated with the Howard Aldrich store. This was his last business activity. He suffered the first of his paralytic strokes while engaged in Shortsville and although he returned briefly his ability to work day by day was limited.
Mr.
Hanley is recalled by those who knew him during his active business career
as a man of powerful physique with a pleasant and lively personality. During his
Shortsville days, in particular he was known as Doc Hanley.
Mr. Hanley was a member of a large family. His brother, Thomas, died
in 1905 in Chicago. A sister, Mrs. Julia Long, of Geneva, has been dead
several years.
On
October 1, 1890, he married Miss Matilda Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Patrick Hamilton of Canandaigua. The ceremony took place in the old St.
Mary's Church on the corner of South Main and Saltonstall streets. Rev.
Father James T Dougherty performed the ceremony. On Oct 1, 1940, Mr. and
Mrs. Hanley noted their golden anniversary and they were remarried in St.
Mary's by Rev. Michael C J. Wall. Mrs.
Hanley died in May, 1941, at the age of 69, and is buried in Calvary
Cemetery.
His body was interred March 24, 1949 Canandaigua, New York, Calvary Cemetery.

Mrs. Elizabeth H. Watts, 81, died Thursday October 20, 1955,
at Cowles Nursing Home after a long period of failing health.
Mrs. Watts was a native of Geneva, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Patrick Hamilton. During
most of her life she lived in Buffalo.
In 1941 she came to Canandaigua to make her home with her
nephew, County Treasurer Edward T. Hanley, and Mrs. Hanley.
The late Mrs. William E. Hanley, mother of County Treasurer, was a
sister of Mrs. Watts. Her
closest survivors are nieces and nephews. Curtice
Funeral Home, and St. Mary's Church. Burial at Calvary Cemetery. Her
body was
interred October 24, 1955 Canandaigua, New York, Calvary Cemetery.

Mrs.
Anna Dougherty Hamilton, 87,
sister of the late Rev. James T. Dougherty, former pastor of St. Mary's
Church, died suddenly Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Daniel Driscoll,
226 Pleasant Street. Born in Romulus, Mrs. Hamilton came here three years ago
from Kendaia and had since resided at the Driscoll home.
She
was the widow of John Hamilton. The only survivor is a grandson, John
P. Murphy, of Skaneateles. Funeral
services were held Thursday from St. Mary's Church.
Interment was made in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Geneva.

Bernard Hamilton, Formerly of Geneva, Killed Yesterday in Yards at
Sayre
Body
Badly Crushed -
Bernard Hamilton, a former resident of this city, was killed in
the railroad yards at Sayre yesterday afternoon. The young man, who was twenty
three years of age, was making his first trip out of the yards, where he had
worked for some time.
Although
the particulars of the accident were not received here, the body showed that the
death was due to the crushing of the chest and neck, caused apparently by
Hamilton being squeezed either between or under the cars.
The accident took place in the Sayre yards about two o'clock yesterday
afternoon.
The remains were sent on to Geneva and taken to the undertaker rooms of DeVaney and Fletcher, where they were then removed to the home of the young man's mother at Kendaia. Burial will be made in the city tomorrow. The body will again arrive here at nine o'clock and funeral services will be held at St. Francis DeSales church.
The deceased is survived by his mother, one brother and two sisters. Up until about ten years ago the family resided on North Street, this city. From here they moved to Kendia. Rev. James T. Dougherty of Canandaigua is an uncle of the deceased. His body was interred 1907 Geneva, New York, St. Patrick's Cemetery.

City records, line 2049, states only that a MALE Hamilton was born. No
name was given, but the parents were Annie, age 34, Varick, Seneca Co.,
NY, and John Hamilton, age 40, Ireland. It also stated that the mother
had 5 previous children, three living. The
grave marker for John and Anna has two children listed having died in
1888 and 1892. Leo

P. Hamilton, formerly of Geneva, died at the Veterans Hospital, West
Kingsbridge Road, New York City, New York, on Monday, following a short illness.
He
is survived by his wife, Mrs. Orianna Hamilton of New York City, his
mother, Mrs. Anna Hamilton, of Canandaigua.
Mr. Hamilton was a veteran of World War I, having served
with Co. C. 212th Field Signal Battallion. He was a member of the Board of
Transportation Post, 1172, American Legion, New York City.
The
funeral will be held on Thursday morning at DeVaney Funeral Home, 187 Main St.,
and also St. Francis DeSales Church at 9. Burial
will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

services for Leo P. Hamilton were conducted this morning from the DeVaney Funeral
Home, 187 Main St., and at St. Francis DeSales Church, Rev. Edward K. Ball
celebrated a solemn requiem mass, Rev. William O'Brien was Deacon, and Rev.
Calogero Gerardi was sub deacon. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Bearers, all members of Winnek Post, American Legion, were Roscoe A. Jackson, Homer R. Ostrander, John E. O'Malley, George Peters, William VanNortwick, and Albert G. Kirby. A firing escort from Company K extended military honors at the grave and was composed of Corp. Frank Pullano, in charge, Corp. Lyle Hargrove, Private First Class Nicholas Coblio, Charles Rogers, Robert Sherman, Abraham George, Glenn Vogt, John Labuff and Privates Charles Mahoney, Thomas Roland, Samuel Stramandinoll, William Bruzee, James Toner, Fred Pulver, Robert Clayton and Rodney Kirk, Bugler.

was
born Geneva, New York July 27, 1869. Edward died August 13, 1903 Littleville, New York,
at 34 years of age. Death record
number 559 at Hopewell clerk office.
EDWARD P.
HAMILTON, son of Patrick Hamilton of Littleville died at the
home of his parents in that village on Thursday aged 34 years. The deceased when
a mere lad, entered the printing office of the Shortsville Enterprise where he
learned typesetting and other useful points in the training of the practical
printer, and at 18 entered the office of the New York World where he soon became
an expert machine operator.
He was for 16 years in the World office, until his health failed. He was
a dutiful son, and highly respected. He leaves a wife and one child, one
brother, John P. Hamilton of Auburn, two sisters, Mrs. James Quinn of Willard
and Mrs. William Hanley of this village.
We made brief note of the death of Edward
P. Hamilton which occurred last week Thursday night, and news of which sad
event came to us just as we were about to put the Enterprise edition to press.
It was in April 1884 that the writer became the owner of the Enterprise. At that
time there was employed in the office a rosey cheeked boy, about fourteen years
of age, a most loveable little fellow, the soul of honor, that he was Eddie
Hamilton, the same young man whom we are feebly attempting to pay our last
tribute of respect.
He
was ever at his post of duty, was trustworthy to a degree that won the love and
admiration for him that has grown with the years.
We cannot refrain from speaking of his Christian character. Not once
during his four years service did we hear an oath or a wicked expression from
his lips, but daily we did hear religious quotations that came from his big
heart, and his large expressive brown eyes told of the enjoyment derived in the
use of scriptural phrases.
It
was during those early years that he was Altar boy for the late Rev. Father Lee,
the loving and beloved priest of the Shortsville and Clifton Springs parishes.
He acted in such capacity during his residence here. That he loved his rector
with a love that lasted through his 34 years of life is manifested by his last
wish that his remains find a resting place by the side of Father Lee, in the
Catholic cemetery between this village and Clifton Springs, which wish was
fulfilled by his loving wife and parents.
We
know full well that these same noble traits of Christian character followed
Edward through life and we honestly believe that it has won for him a crown in
the heavenly mansion. Long shall we cherish the memory of our loving faithful,
and honorable apprentice of almost twenty years ago. His
body was interred 1903 Clifton Springs, New
York, St. Agnes Cemetery.

Gibson Street. Canandaigua City clerk office record number 14 on Page 216 shows
an address of 124 W. Gibson St., and that burial would be at Calvary.

The funeral services of Lillian F. Kennedy, whose death occurred at her
home on West Gibson Street on Thursday following a long illness, were held at
St. Mary's Church on Saturday. Solemn High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Michael
C. Wall, Rector of the church, and Rev. William Devereaux, Assistant Rector as
sub deacon. Members of the Amer. Legion Auxiliary, St. Vincent DePaul Society,
and the Mother's Club of St Mary's Church attended in body. Other delegations
included members of the Legion Post, Ontario County Comm. of Internal Revenue
Department.
Mrs. Kennedy
had many friends in the community who deeply regret
her passing. She leaves besides her husband, one daughter Helen R., and two
sons, T. Hamilton and Robert P. Kennedy, and her mother, Mrs. Mae Hamilton who
is employed at Willard State Hospital.
Bearers were, R. Milton Hanley, John T. Murphy, Thomas L.
Smith, Alexander Grieve, Leo H. and Edward M. Breen. Interment at Calvary. Her
body was
interred 1932 Canandaigua, New York, Calvary Cemetery.

The marriage of Thomas Daniel Kennedy, Clark Street, and Miss Frances Lillian Hamilton, Center Street, took place at St. Mary's church on Monday. Rev. James T. Dougherty performed the ceremony. The bride wore a blue suit with taupe hat. Her corsage bouquet was of bride's roses. She was attended by Miss Elizabeth Kennedy of Canandaigua, sister of the groom, who wore a blue suit with a black hat. Her bouquet was pink roses.
The groom was attended by
William Hanley. Ushers were Raymond and John
Kennedy, cousins of the groom. The wedding music was played by Miss Ruth Pierce
and Mrs. Fred S. Haubner sang. A wedding breakfast was served at the home of
Mrs. Helen McCarthy, Center Street, with whom the bride resided. Covers were
laid for 25. They will reside at Atwater Place.

Thomas D. Kennedy, 65, who has been a Canandaigua City Treasurer for 27 years, died Tuesday night, August 4, 1959, in Highland Hospital, Rochester, following a brief illness. He was born in Canandaigua and attended St. Mary's School. He studied at LaSalle Business Institute of accounting and after preliminary training at Buffalo Technical High School and Camp Hancock, Ga., served overseas in the US Air Force in World War I.
The
following statement in tribute to Thomas Kennedy's long career of public
service was issued this morning by Mayor Richard M. Bottorf, August 5,
1959, The City of Canandaigua notes
with regret the passing of Thomas D. Kennedy.
He devoted the greater part of his life to public service and for the
past 28 years has been our City Treasurer, in which capacity he has acted most
ably and efficiently.
His
passing is a deep loss to the City. I
know that I speak for all the people of our community in extending sincerest
sympathy to his family. Respectfully,
Richard M. Bottorf, Mayor. On his return from service, he was
appointed internal revenue collector for this district, a post he held for 10
years. He was very active in the American Legion, having been a past commander
of the Canandaigua Post 556, and a past commander of the Ontario County Legion
Post.
In
March of this year, he was presented a 40 year membership award by the
Canandaigua Post. He was also a member of the 40 and 8. He was elected city
treasurer in the fall of 1931 and took office the following year. In 1935, he
was appointed relief commissioner for the assembly district of Ontario County in
connection with the work of Veterans Relief Bureau of the State Division of
Military and Naval Affairs.
In
the early thirties he was chairman of the Canandaigua Citizens Legion committee
which successfully conducted the campaign to have the Veterans Hospital located
in Canandaigua. He was a very active in the Republican Party having served as
member and former chairman of the Republican City Committee.
He was re-nominated Monday night by the committee as candidate for city
treasurer for another term.
He
is survived by his wife, the former Roby P. Newton, two sons, T.
Hamilton Kennedy, and Robert P. Kennedy, both of Canandaigua, a daughter, Helen
R. Kennedy, West Chester, Pa., four grandchildren, a brother, Jack
Kennedy, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Burr, both of Shortsville. Interment at Calvary Cemetery.
His body was interred 1959 Canandaigua, New York, Calvary Cemetery.
John Paul4 Hamilton was born Littleville, New York January 18, 1878. John died March 30, 1951 Philadelphia, Penn., at 73 years of age. He married Emma Lamay Auburn, New York, June 28, 1899.
