Edward Hanley and Mary McGriff had the following children:

Margaret² Hanley was born Ireland 1845. Margaret died December 20, 1920 Canandaigua, New York, at 75 years of age.

RYAN - The death of Mrs. Margaret Hanley Ryan, aged 75 years, occurred at her home on Phoenix Street on Monday, following a long illness. There survive three daughters, and two sons, Miss Mary E. Ryan, Canandaigua, Mrs. John Dyer, Rochester, Mrs. John Guinan, Mertensia, P. J. Ryan, Hopewell, and Edward M. Ryan, of Canandaigua, also one sister, Mrs. Mary Joyce of Canandaigua. The funeral services were held at St. Mary's Church yesterday. Interment was in Victor.

Michael was born Ireland 1847. Michael was the son of Thomas Ryan and Mary Walsh. Michael died October 22, 1907 Hopewell, New York, at 60 years of age.

LIFE WAS CRUSHED OUT MICHAEL RYAN CAUGHT IN CORN HARVESTER, MEETS HORRIBLE DEATH

A terrible death was that of Michael Ryan, a well known Chapinville farmer, who formerly resided in Victor, whose life was crushed out in the machinery of a corn harvester, Tuesday. Mr. Ryan was taking the harvester to his home from the farm of Daniel O'Brien near Shortsville, and driving a team of his own horses. Just how he became entangled in the machine, will probably never be known.

Neighbors within a half mile of his home noticed the team coming along the road apparently without a driver, and upon investigation found that Mr. Ryan's body was caught in the machine and was being carried along as the horses quietly made their way home. Mr. Ryan was quite dead when found, his chest and abdomen being crushed in and he was otherwise terribly injured.

No one saw him fall from the machine, and no one knew that an accident had occurred until the driverless team came along the road. It was about 4 o'clock in the afternoon when the team was found.

Mr. Ryan had many relatives and friends in Victor, and many expressions of sympathy at his death with the bereaved family are heard.

The deceased was about sixty two years of age. He is survived by his wife and five children, James P. Ryan of Hopewell, Edward Ryan of Canandaigua, The Misses Mary and Zetta Ryan, of Chapinville, and Mrs. John Dyer of Rochester. Also two brothers, John of Mertensia, and Patrick of Farmington, and one sister, Mrs. Patrick Carney, of Chapinville.

Funeral services were held at the home and St. Mary's Church in Canandaigua, Thursday AM, and interment made in St. Patrick's Cemetery, this village, Thursday PM.

Margaret became the mother of Mary Ellen Ryan New York, 1873. Margaret became the mother of Edward Michael Ryan Victor, New York, 1881. Margaret became the mother of Sarah Zetta Ryan 1889. Surrogate papers show her petitioner to be Mary E. Ryan.

Mary Hanley was born 1853. Mary died February 14, 1921 Canandaigua, New York, at 67 years of age.

JOYCE - The death of Mrs. Mary Hanley Joyce, aged 68 years, widow of John Joyce, occurred at the home of her son, Edward Joyce, Davidson Avenue, on Monday evening, following a long illness. She leaves one son, Edward. The funeral services were held at St. Mary's Church yesterday morning. Interment was made in Victor.

DIED - JOYCE - At Canandaigua, February 14, 1921, Mrs. John Joyce, aged 68 years. Her body was interred 1921 Victor, New York, St. Patrick's Cemetery.

LOCAL NEWS - The funeral of Mrs. John Hanley who died at her daughter's Mrs. M. R. Dutton, near Barney's Bridge, East of this village, Tuesday, takes place this PM at the house.

John Hanley to Wm. A. Husbands 6 one half acres, one dollar, etc. Wm. A. Husbands to Wm. E. Hanley, 6 and one half acres, one dollar. The land which was situated across from the fair grounds was purchased in 1895, mortgaged from Kezzie B. Jewett for 300 dollars.

John Charles Hanley and Catherine Madden had the following children:

Julia Ann Hanley was born Canandaigua, New York April 07, 1868. Julia died July 02, 1919 Geneva, New York, at 51 years of age. Residence at 59 John Street, 3rd Ward.

Mrs. Julia Long - Canandaigua - July 3 The death of Mrs. Julia Long, formerly a resident of Canandaigua, occurred at Geneva last evening after a long illness.

She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Thomas Brennan of Rochester, Mrs. Alvey Marshall, Miss Julia Long and Miss Mildred Long, all of Geneva, and two sons, John Long and Thomas Long, both of Geneva.

She also leaves a brother, William E. Hanley, of Canandaigua, and a sister, Mrs. Edward Regan, of Jersey City. Burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Her body was interred 1919 Geneva, New York, St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Thomas J. Hanley was born Canandaigua, New York February 20, 1870. Thomas died March 29, 1904 Chicago, Ill., at 34 years of age.

Thomas J. Hanley died at his home in Chicago on Tuesday, aged about 33 years. Deceased was a Canandaigua boy, widely and favorably known, who went to Chicago many years ago, learned the plumbing business and prospered until cut down by illness.

He is survived by his wife, one brother, William Hanley of this place, Canandaigua, who attended the funeral in Chicago, and two sisters, Mrs. John Long, Julia, and Mrs. N. H. Regan, Lillian, of New Jersey.

DIED - HANLEY - At Chicago, Illinois, March 29, 1904, Thomas J. Hanley, formerly of Canandaigua. His body was interred 1904 in Chicago, Illinois, Oakwoods Cemetery. He married Bertha Radloff in Chicago, Illinois, 1896.^[i] [i]. Bertha's name appears in Thomas death notice in the Chicago newspaper. After Bertha Hanley it had nee Radloff.

Lillian M. Hanley was born Canandaigua, New York March 17, 1872. She married Newell H. Ragan Canandaigua, New York, January 03, 1894.^[ii][ii]. A copy of the church record can be found on PG 1D in the book, A Tree Trunk.

At St. Mary's Church, Canandaigua, January 3rd, by Rev. D. English, Newell H. Ragan, of Rochester, and Lillian M. Hanley, of Canandaigua.

William E.³ Hanley was born Canandaigua, New York Ontario County November 20, 1866. William died March 21, 1949 Canandaigua, New York, at 82 years of age.

WILLIAM E. HANLEY, 82 Dies in City

Member of well known family Passes

William E. Hanley 82, former merchant, and member of one of Canandaigua's well known families died at his home, 16 Greig Terrace, Monday night after a long period of ill health, Mr. Hanley, incapacitated by two paralytic strokes, had withdrawn in recent years from active business life which he had known for fully a half century in Canandaigua. Sunday his condition became more serious and despite careful medical attention he failed rapidly.

Funeral services for Mr. Hanley were held Thursday morning from the Kennedy funeral chapel and from St. Mary's Church. Burial was made in Calvary Cemetery. He was a lifelong attendant and member of St. Mary's.

Mr. Hanley was the father of County Treasurer, Edward T. Hanley, of Albert F. Hanley, and Robert Milton Hanley, all well known Canandaigua residents, and of Walter H. Hanley, of Ilion. Another son, William E. Jr. died in 1931. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Lillian Ragan of Jersey City, NJ. There are ten grandchildren in the family.

Mr. Hanley was born in Canandaigua on November 30, 1866, the son of John and Elizabeth Madden Hanley. His parents were then living on Pleasant Street, a quiet tree lined thoroughfare in that post Civil War day. The neighbors were the Burke and Spencer families, who like the Hanley's were long on Children and short on financial means.

After his formal schooling had closed, Mr. Hanley journeyed westward to Chicago where he spent a year in the employ of a wholesale grocery house. Returning to Canandaigua he went to work for the late W. A. Husbands who had a meat market where Emma M Finley store is today on Main Street.

In 1904 Mr. Hanley formed a partnership with Mr. Husbands, and the late Howard J. Moore. The trio operated two markets, the Husband market and the People's Cash Market which is located where Clement's restaurant is today. This was a comparatively short lived partnership. In 1907 Mr. Hanley withdrew and opened a market of his own in Phoenix Street. After three years of operation here he came back to the familiar scene of the People's Market and went into business here.

In 1913 he disposed of his holdings here to the late H. O. Park. His next business operation was on Bristol Street, where he had one of the community's best known markets for almost 15 years. He left Bristol Street in 1927 and shifted his activity to Shortsville where he was associated with the Howard Aldrich store. This was his last business activity. He suffered the first of his paralytic strokes while engaged in Shortsville and although he returned briefly his ability to work day by day was limited.

Mr. Hanley is recalled by those who knew him during his active business career as a man of powerful physique with a pleasant and lively personality. During his Shortsville days, in particular he was known as Doc Hanley. Mr. Hanley was a member of a large family. His brother, Thomas, died in 1905 in Chicago. A sister, Mrs. Julia Long, of Geneva, has been dead several years.

On October 1, 1890, he married Miss Matilda Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Hamilton of Canandaigua. The ceremony took place in the old St. Mary's Church on the corner of South Main and Saltonstall streets. Rev. Father James T Dougherty performed the ceremony. On Oct 1, 1940, Mr. and Mrs. Hanley noted their golden anniversary and they were remarried in St. Mary's by Rev. Michael C J. Wall.

Mrs. Hanley died in May, 1941, at the age of 69, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery. His body was interred March 24, 1949 Canandaigua, New York, Calvary Cemetery

He married Matilda Josephine Hamilton Canandaigua, New York, October 01, 1890.^[i] St. Mary's Church, Nazareth College record of marriage states witnesses were Ben. Meath and Mary Hamilton. [i]. A copy of the Church Record of Marriage can be found on PG 1B in the book, A Tree Trunk.

Matilda was born Geneva, New York Ontario County October 02, 1871. Matilda was the daughter of Patrick J. Hamilton and Margaret Hassan. Matilda died May 21, 1941 Canandaigua, New York, at 69 years of age.

Mrs. William E. Hanley, Canandaigua

Mrs. Matilda Hamilton Hanley, wife of William E. Hanley and mother of Edward T. Hanley, chairman of the Ontario County Board of Supervisors, died here yesterday in her home, 16 Greig Ter.

She was born in Geneva, daughter of Patrick and Mary Hasson Hamilton, but had been a resident of Canandaigua since her marriage in 1890.

Surviving are four sons, Edward T., Albert F., and R. Milton Hanley, Canandaigua, and Walter H. Hanley, Ilion, also one sister, Mrs. Arthur Watts, Canandaigua, and a brother, John P. Hamilton, Philadelphia. Funeral will be at 9 AM tomorrow in St. Mary's Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery.

ONTARIO COUNTY JOURNAL SEPT 7, 1906 PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS

W. E. Hanley is attending the Toronto Exposition.

In the newspaper, ONTARIO COUNTY JOURNAL on Friday, December 1, 1911, PAGE 3 COL 3, was an article concerning his business. It read as follows:

The meat market conducted for some years by William Hanley has been purchased by H. O. Parks, who will take possession on Monday. Mr. Hanley contemplates going into extensive farming near the village. Mr. Parks for many years conducted feed barns here. William P. Blanchard who has been with the Hanley Market for some years will remain with the new proprietor.

Also on the same page was a NOTICE pertaining to this transfer of business stating the following, Having sold my market and business to H. O. Parks, I hereby give notice that all accounts due me shall be paid on or before Saturday, December 9. All persons having accounts against me are requested to present them not later than the above date.

HANLEY SELLS MARKET

William E. Hanley who has been in the meat market business for 45 years in various locations on Main Street, and for the past 15 years on Bristol Street, has sold his market to Carl Christopher, an employee of the Square Market, and long experienced in the business.

The deal has just gone through and Mr. Christopher will take possession on March 1. Mr. Hanley will retire from the business. He states that he has no plans to announce for the future.

NEW MARKET - W. A. Hanley to start a Meat and Canned Goods Store

On Wednesday of next week, William A. Hanley, for 20 years past an employee of W. A. Husbands and Co., will open up a new meat market and canned goods store in the Grieve Block in Phoenix Street. The building has been thoroughly renovated and all new market fixtures have been installed, including a modern refrigerator which cost 250 dollars.

The interior of the store has also been painted and renewed. Mr. Hanley has a wide knowledge as a meat dealer and his many years experience in the line will be a valuable asset to his patrons, and he has many friends who will wish him success in his business venture.
