A runaway team,

four year old Eugene Callahan who was playing in the road.
Carson Buchanan and Edward Hanley saw the child's predicament and
played hero in fine style, one rescuing the child and the other seizing the
horses.

FIRE IN HANLEY GARAGE DOES DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT 7000 dollars.
Fire, which
resulted in damage estimated from 6000 to 7000 dollars, started in the battery
room of the Hanley's Canandaigua garage, Edward T. Hanley,
proprietor, in Main street south shortly after 9 40 Thursday morning.
The fire when first discovered by Arthur Bird, an employee, was
near the ceiling in the battery room and it is thought probable it was caused by
defective wiring. The room rapidly filled with smoke, and Bird giving the alarm,
Edward McCarthy, another worker sent in a general alarm from box 44.
Mr. Hanley was
in his apartment over the garage when he heard an employee call out that the
place was on fire. The apartments quickly filled with smoke and Mr. Hanley,
carrying his infant son, and Mrs. Hanley escaped to the street through a
thick volume of smoke, where friends took Mrs. Hanley and the child to
the home of relatives.
All four of the
city fire companies responded promptly and it was forty minutes before the fire
was under control and an hour before it was entirely extinguished. Thomas
McGregor of Erina Hose Company, was overcome by smoke, but was soon resuscitated
when taken out of the building. The
battery room and several adjoining rooms were gutted and a large portion of the
second story roofing and flooring was destroyed, including apartments occupied
by Mrs. John Cupppins.
There were several new Willys Knight and Overland cars stored in the building, all of which were removed without damage, except that one was scorched on the body. Mr. Hanley states that the loss was fully covered by insurance and says that he will rebuild the damaged section at once. He expressed his appreciation of the manner in which the fire was handled by the department and police.
