CHAPIN - George Kotteker, - Postmaster and sexton of Chapin church for many years, fell from the belfry of the church down the entire flight of stairs. Mr. Kotteker is a man nearing 75 years of age and has long been lame for many years having to always walk with a cane. It seems a miracle that he was not killed or bones broken. He received a gash in the forehead, a bruised arm and lame hip which confined him to his home a few days. Even the glasses he always wears were not out of place or injured. He is improving.

DEATH of MR LAMPORT
THE CLOSE of a BUSY and
USEFUL LIFE
The
Hon. William H. Lamport died yesterday, the 21st instant, at 11 30 AM at
his residence on Park Street in this village.
As many of our readers are aware, the deceased had long been afflicted
with cancer of the face, and it was the resistless progress of this fatal malady
that finally caused his death.
Some
months since it was thought advisable by the attending physicians to remove his
left eye, but even this extreme measure failed to afford more than temporary
relief, and the disease ultimately extended to the brain, and this put an end to
his suffering.
He
leaves one son and one daughter, Mr. Charles H. Lamport of NY, and Mrs.
H. F. Stark of Atlanta, Ga.. The latter came North several weeks ago and
remained with him to the last. His last hours were also cheered by the presence
of his sisters, Mrs. Harriet Griswold, Washington, DC, Mrs. Harris
Andrews and Mrs. David Anderson, of this village, and also his brother,
Mr. Hiram Lamport of Brooklyn.
His
son arrived from NY this morning. William
H. Lamport was a son of the late John Lamport, a native of Pittstown,
Rensselear County, who was married to Margaret Sisson, a Rhode Island
woman in 1806. William H.
was born May 27, 1811. In 1826 his parents removed from Rensselear County to the
town of Gorham, Ontario County, where he grew to man's estate, and following the
occupation of his father, became a farmer.
His
opportunities for obtaining an education were extremely meager, being limited
after the family removed to Gorham to an attendance through three winter terms
at the old log schoolhouse in district 2 of that town.
In
1831 he was married to Mary Ellen Townsend of Benton, Yates County, who
died in Canandaigua December 27, 1887. In
1832 he united with the Presbyterian Church and ever after remained a consistent
and devoted member of that organization.
During
his long life Mr. Lamport was a called to fill many positions of public
trust and responsibility, in all of which he discharged the duties devolved upon
him with the strictest fidelity. In
1840 he was elected by his towns men to the office of school inspector, and in
1845 to that of Supervisor, and 1846 was reelected.
In 1849 he was elected Sheriff of Ontario County. In 1854 he was chosen
to represent the First Assembly District of Ontario County in the State
Legislature, and in 1870 having in the meantime, 1864, removed to Canandaigua,
was elected Rep. in Congress and two years later reelected.
There
is much more in this article, however I did not transcribe it. His
body was interred 1891 Canandaigua, New
York, West Avenue Cemetery. Section
