MATHER   - MC CARTHY

George C.2 Mather  was born in Middlesex, New York 1836.  George died March 27, 1902 Canandaigua, New York, at 65 years of age.

George C. Mather died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. G. Douglass, West Gibson Street, yesterday, after a long illness from creeping paralysis.  Deceased was born in Middlesex 76 years ago. He came to Canandaigua in 1859 and purchased the fine farm on the west lake shore, which was his home until a few years ago, when he came to live with his children in this village. 

Mr. Mather was a successful farmer and horse breeder.  He took special interest in stock and owned the first Berkshire swine ever brought to this vicinity. He was an intelligent, kind hearted and useful citizen, esteemed and respected by all who knew him. Mr. Mather was a Republican, and for 12 years was a member of the excise board. He also served as road commissioner.

There survive him two sons and two daughters, C. R. Mather, of this village, John L. Mather, of Shortsville, and Mrs. F. G. Douglass and Mrs. Charles F. Robertson, of this village.   A brother, Abram Mather, of Rushville, also survives. Mr. Mather's wife died in 1874. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the residence of F. G. Douglass. Rev. Dr. J. Wallace Webb will officiate. 

Sarah Rebecca Mather was born Canandaigua, New York October 21, 1854.  Sarah died February 27, 1957 Canandaigua, New York, at 102 years of age.

                       Mrs. Sarah Douglass Dies at Age of 102

CANANDAIGUA  -  February 27, Mrs. Sarah Mather Douglass, 102, this area's oldest resident, died this morning February 27, 1957, in the Canandaigua Health Home after a long period of failing health. She had been a resident of the Health Home for about three months. 

The family home was at 34 Gorham St.   Mrs. Douglass always had resided in the Canandaigua area and was a member of one of the locality's oldest families.  She was born October 21, 1854, a daughter of George C. and Malvinna Adams Mather.  During her girlhood she lived on the West lake shore, four miles south of the city. 

 The Mather homestead which dated to 1808, was one of the earliest pioneer farm residences in this locality.  Mrs. Douglass was the last surviving alumna of Ontario Female Seminary which stood for 20 years on the present site of Thompson Memorial Hospital in North Main Street.  She attended the Seminary in 1871 and 1872, and enjoyed recalling in her later life how her father brought her each morning to school. In winter, she remembered the trip was often made down the lake on the ice. 

 She was married to Fred Douglass in March, 1879.  He was the county's first highway superintendent, and was a major figure in the development of an improved road system in the county in the first years of this century.  He was fatally injured in a highway accident in 1918.   Mrs. Douglass and her daughter, Miss Emma A. Douglass, resided for 35 years in Gorham Street until her last sickness when she moved to the Canandaigua Health Home.

She is survived by two daughters, Miss Douglass and Mrs. Ray W. Johnson, both of Canandaigua, four sons, Samuel M., Ray E., Fred M., all of this city, and Ira C. Eggertsville, 15 grandchildren, and 31 great grandchildren.  A funeral service will be held in the Kennedy Funeral Chapel Saturday with Rev. Ellroy D. VanDyke pastor of the Canandaigua Methodist Church officiating.  Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Her body was interred 1957 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery. 

                  She married Fred Gifford Douglass Canandaigua, New York, March 13, 1879.   Fred was born in Rensselear, New York February 14, 1853.  Fred was the son of Samuel Douglass and Waity R. Gifford.  Fred died July 18, 1918 Canandaigua, New York, at 65 years of age.

WAS STRUCK by AUTO WHILE at WORK   Fred G. Douglass, State Road Inspector Dies From Injuries  Car Driven by Woman

Fred G. Douglass, aged 65 years, employed as inspector of state highways, died yesterday, Memorial Hospital, from injuries received when he was run down by an automobile on the Geneva Turnpike on Tuesday. While working on some highway repair work he stepped near an approaching automobile and was knocked down, receiving a fractured skull and other severe injuries.

Mrs. Lambert of Geneva, who was driving the car is said to have sounded sufficient warning, but Mr. Douglass did not hear.  

Mr. Douglass was born in Pittstown, February 14, 1853, the oldest son of Samuel and Waity Gifford Douglass. He moved with his parents to Gorham on the East shore of the lake, and in 1858 they bought a farm on the West shore in Canandaigua Town, where his boyhood was spent. In 1867 they removed to a farm in the North part of town where Mr. Douglass resided until recently when the moved to Dailey Avenue. 

Mr. Douglass was educated at Canandaigua Academy. He taught two years in Farmington, one winter in District 15, and three in District 8 in Canandaigua.  In March 1879 he married Sarah R. Mather of Canandaigua and worked his father's farm until April 1889 when he bought the Kelsey farm of 100 acres. He continued general farming for a number of years and in 1888 was selected commissioner of highways, serving three years. 

For the past 25 years Mr. Douglass had been engaged in road building. He was town superintendent of roads for 12 years, county supervisor for three, and for 2 years was in the Adirondacks road building. 

The past few years he had been an inspector in the state highway. He leaves his widow, and two daughters, Mrs. Ray W. Johnson and Miss Emma Douglass, of Canandaigua, four sons, Samuel and Ira R. of Rochester, Ray E. and Fred M. of Canandaigua, three sisters, Mrs. Ira P. Cribb, Mrs. Isaiah Case and Miss Mary Douglass, and one brother, James.  He was to be buried at Woodlawn.  

Archie1 Maxon   -  He married Helen.  Helen was born 1892.  Helen became the mother of Mary K. Maxon 1914.  At 22 years of age Helen became the mother of Irene Maxon Canandaigua, New York, June 15, 1915.   

Archie Maxon and Helen had the following child:

 BORN -  MAXINE -  This was the spelling in the newspaper, At Canandaigua, June 15, 1915, to Mr. and Mrs. A. Maxine, Wood Street, a daughter. 

William Huff Maybee and Julia Ette Harrington had the following child:

Sarah Emily3 Maybee was born in Stockdale, Ontario Canada January 22, 1848.  Sarah died November 27, 1921 in Manchester Center, New York, at 73 years of age.

Mrs. Harrison Andrews  -   The death of Mrs. Sarah E. Andrews, aged 73 years, occurred at her home in Manchester Center last Sunday evening. She was twice married, her first husband having been William Wheatley, who died several years ago.

Died at Clifton Springs, November 27, 1921, Mrs. Sarah E. Andrews, aged 73 years. Her body was interred 1921 Manchester, New York, Pioneer Cemetery.

She married William Wheatley 1867.  William was born in Harby, Leicestershire, England January 09, 1832.  William was the son of Richard Wheatley and Elizabeth Smith.  He married Mary Ann Romans.  William died June 15, 1908 Manchester, New York, at 76 years of age.

Death of William Wheatley -    William Wheatley, one of the oldest residents of the town of Manchester, died at his home, about one mile East of the village, on Monday morning at 5 o'clock. Death was caused by rheumatism of the heart. 

He was about 77 years of age and is survived by his widow, five daughters, Mrs. David Slack, of Clifton Springs, Mrs. George VanGelder of Canandaigua, Mrs. Harriet Hornsby, of Palmyra, Mrs. John Slack, and Mrs. Daniel Damon of this village, and two sons, Richard of Hopewell, and Albert who resides at the farm home. 

The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Methodist church, Rev. S. S. Pratt officiating. The interment was in the old Manchester Cemetery.  Mr. Wheatley has been a great sufferer from rheumatism for many months and it was with difficulty that he was able to tend to his labors. He had been a frequent caller at our sanctum during the years we have had the privilege to know him, and was a very interesting talker, often relating many historical facts concerning the town of Manchester. It is with deep regret that we learn of his death and we shall sorely miss his presence from our village.

                            She married Harrison Andrews Shortsville, New York, February 19, 1912.[i]  [i]. Ontario County Archives marriage record number 136.; and Certificate and Record of Marriage number 136, and the Affidavit for License to Marry are on PG 1W and PG 1X in the book, A Tree Trunk.

The marriage of Mrs. Sarah E. Wheatley of Manchester Center, and Harrison Andrews of Bristol, took place at the Presbyterian manse in Robinson Street on Monday noon, Rev. D. H. MacKenzie performing the ceremony.  Mr. and Mrs. Andrews will make their home on the bride's farm at Manchester Center.   

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph  B. McCallum Sr. had the following children:

Olin Edgar McCallum.  He married Emma Margaret Baker Geneva, New York, December 06, 1916.

At the North Presbyterian church last evening took place the marriage of Emma Margaret Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Baker, of Geneva, to Olin Edgar McCallum, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. McCallum of Oaks Corners. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. David H. Craver, the ring service being used.

The young couple were attended by Miss Olive Baker, sister of the bride, and Joseph McCallum, brother of the groom. The bride wore a suit of blue chiffon broadcloth, with white hat and veil. The bridesmaid wore a suit of blue serge with a black hat. Mr. and Mrs. McCallum left amid a shower of rice on the train for a wedding trip to Rochester, Buffalo and other points.

After December 15th they will be at 23 Godelle Terrace. Among the prenuptial events was a china shower given by Miss Glenora McCallum, and a variety shower by Miss Olive Baker. 

 

Joseph B. Jr. McCallum was born in Farmington, Pa. May 24, 1891. Joseph died June 22, 1921 in Oaks Corners, New York, at 30 years of age.                                                            GENEVA DAILY TIMES  June 23, 1921 

OBITUARY -  Joseph B. McCallum Jr., aged 29 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. McCallum of Oaks Corners, died at his home in that village yesterday afternoon after a long illness. Mr. McCallum was born in Farmington, Penn., May 24, 1891.

On March 31, 1918 he married Miss Hazel Rice of Penn., who survives him. He is also survived by his father and mother, three sisters, Mrs. W. T. Iddings, of Geneva, Mrs. Thomas J. Willson, of Wooster, Ohio, and Mrs. Arthur Day Jr., of Elba, NY, five brothers, Benjamin D. of Cleveland, Ohio, Herbert A. of Oaks Corners, Olin E. of Geneva, and Clifford and Robert McCallum, at home. Another sister, Glenora Marshall, died last year.

The funeral will be held from the home at Oaks Corners Saturday afternoon, Rev. Bruce E. Pierce of the Geneva M. E. Church officiating. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery in this city. His body was interred 1921 Geneva, New York, Glenwood Cemetery.  788  3  F He married Hazel Rice March 31, 1918. 

 

Glenora McCallum  was born in Farmington, Tioga, Penn. September 29, 1893.  Glenora died March 2, 1921 Geneva, New York, at 27 years of age.[ii]  [ii]. Death Certificate number 41 found at Geneva City Hall states she lived at 100 East North Street, Ward number 6.

OBITUARY -    Mrs. Glenora Marshall, wife of Eugene J. Marshall, 100 E. North Street, died last night at the Geneva City Hospital after a long illness.

She is survived by her husband, one son, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McCallum of Oaks Corners, six brothers, Herbert, Clifford, Robert, and Joseph McCallum of Oaks Corners, Olin McCallum of Geneva, and Benjamin McCallum of Cleveland, Ohio, three sisters, Miss Myria McCallum and Mrs. Eddings of Oaks Corners, and Mrs. Thomas Wilson of Worchester, Ohio.

The funeral will be held Saturday morning at her home, and at 9 o'clock at St. Francis de Sales church. Burial will be made in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Her body was interred 1921 Geneva, New York, St. Patrick Cemetery.

At St. Stephen's church yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock took place the marriage of Miss Glenora McCollum, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McCollum Sr., of Oaks Corners, to Eugene J. Marshall, son of Mrs. Eugene Marshall of Geneva.

The ceremony was performed by the Rev. George Doud, the ring service being used. The bridal couple were attended by Miss Hazel McCollum of Oaks Corners, sister of the bride, and Elvey Marshall, Geneva, brother of the groom.

The bride wore a suit of blue tweed with white hat, and a corsage bouquet of white roses and sweet peas. The bridesmaid wore a suit of blue tweed with a pink and white hat, and wore white sweet peas. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall left on the Black Diamond for a trip to Buffalo and other points. After June they will be at home to reside at 10 East North Street.

Among the prenuptial events was a linen shower given by Mrs. Olin McCollum, and a variety shower by Miss Mary Hartranft, both of Geneva. 

 Honora Esther McCarthy  was born 1897.  She married Frank Augustus Ryan Victor, New York, May 17, 1922.

Miss Honora Esther McCarthy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McCarthy of East Street, and Frank Augustus Ryan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ryan, were united in marriage on Wednesday, May 17th, at St. Patrick's Church.

The ceremony took place at 7 30 a. m. with the nuptial mass, Rev. J. W. E. Kelly, pastor of the church, officiating. The wedding march was played by Miss Anna Ryan and Edward J. Ryan sang O Promise Me, and Ave Maria. The attendants were Miss Genevieve McCarthy, sister of the bride, and Howard Ryan, brother of the groom.  The ushers were Arthur McCarthy, brother of the bride, and Leo Ryan, brother of the groom.

The bride wore a suit of dark blue twill cord with a picture hat of gray hemp and a corsage bouquet of bride's roses.  The bridesmaid wore a suit of old rose tweed with a hat of sand colored satin and a corsage bouquet of pink sweet peas. 

 A wedding breakfast was served to the bridal party at the home of the bride's parents. After a wedding trip to New York and Atlantic City, Mr. and Mrs. Ryan will make their home in Victor, where Mr. Ryan is engaged in the produce business with George W. Haxton and Son.  Mrs. Ryan is manager of the local Postal Telegraph office. 

Pre nuptial events were a shower party given at the town hall on Thursday evening of last week by  the  Misses Sarah McMahon, Esther Dailey and Margaret Barry. Supper was served at 8 o'clock to 38   guests.  On Friday evening the Misses Elizabeth McMahon and Stella Lincoln gave a variety shower  at the home of Miss McMahon.  The guest of honor received many beautiful and appropriate gifts. 

Thomas2 McCarthy was born Ireland 1854.  Thomas died April 24, 1926 Seneca Falls, New York, at 71 years of age. 

Seneca Falls newspaper stated the following information, Died  -  Thomas McCarthy, April 24, 1926, Tuesday, Seneca Falls, age 72, born Ireland, came to Seneca Falls as a boy, surviving his brother by one week, surviving are two daughters, Miss Mary, Rochester, married to John Gillette, St. Paul, three sons, Thomas McCarthy, Joseph McCarthy, Frank McCarthy, all of Seneca Falls, a sister, Mary Gallagher, Buffalo, two grandchildren. His body was interred 1926 Seneca Falls, New York, St. Columbkille Cemetery

Tuesday, Seneca Falls, age 72 years, born in Ireland, came to Seneca Falls as a boy, surviving his brother by one week. Surviving him are two daughters, Miss Mary, Rochester, married John Gillette, St. Paul, three sons, Thomas, Frank, and Joseph, all of Seneca Falls, a sister, Marr, Mary Gallagher, Buffalo, and two grandchildren. 

Alice Loretta McCarthy  was born Seneca Falls, New York May 30, 1890.  Her body was interred March 30, 1966 Seneca Falls, New York, St. Columbkille Cemetery.  Section  A  Lot number 57. She married Joseph J. Smith Seneca Falls, New York, October 22, 1913.  According to the church records in Seneca Falls, the marriage was witnessed by John McGuire and Carlotta Barton.

                        McCarthy  -   Smith       Seneca Falls, October 22 

The marriage of Miss Alice McCarthy, daughter of Michael McCarthy of East Bayard Street, and Joseph Smith, was solemnized at St. Patrick's church at 7 AM today, Rev. M. T. Dwyer assisted by Rev. Raymond Quigley, performing the ceremony which was followed by a nuptial mass.

 The church was filled with friends and relatives of the young couple. The bride was gowned in a pretty tailored suit of blue with hat of corresponding color and wore a corsage bouquet of lilies of the valley. Her attendant was Miss Charlotte Barton of Syracuse, who was similarly attired.

Mr. Smith's best man was John McGuire. Following a wedding breakfast at the home of the bride's father, Mr. and Mrs. Smith left on the 11 o'clock train for a two week wedding trip. Upon their return they will reside in East Bayard Street.
