McMILLAN, 84, ONLY LOCAL SURVIVOR OF 126TH REGIMENT
Sixty
six years ago today, on August 22, 1862, the 126th, New York Volunteer Regiment
was mustered into the United States service at Camp Swift, which was situated at
the corner of Hamilton street and White Springs road in the southwestern
outskirts of the then village of Geneva.
Today
when the 66th anniversary of that event was celebrated at the Canandaigua Hotel,
Horton McMillan, 84 years old, was the only surviving member of the
regiment to attend from Canandaigua. Mr.
McMillan came in from his farm north of this city on the Bloomfield road.
The 126th Regiment was one of the Regiments raised in response to the
call of President Lincoln, on July 1, 1862, for 30, 000 more men, and was
recruited in the counties of Ontario, Seneca, and Yates.
Elikim Sherrill of Geneva became the, before a month had expired
since colonel of the regiment, and James lieutenant colonel. The strength of the
regiment when it was mustered in was 39 officers and 956 enlisted men.
On
August 26, 1862, four days after it was mustered into the United States, its
muster the regiment was surrendered and paroled together with 11, 000 other
Union troops. This surrender was in
no way attributable to the fault of the regiment, but rather to the fault of the
weak States service, the regiment marched down through the streets of Geneva to
the boat landing and embarked on the old Elmira for Watkins, the first stage of
its journey to the front. Reaching Baltimore the following day, it was assigned
for duty at Harper's Ferry.
During
the siege of Harper's Ferry, before a month had expired since and ill advised
action of the commanding officers of the army.
After being sent to Camp Douglas at Chicago to spend its parole, the
regiment was exchanged and at once ordered to the defense of Washington at
Arlington Heights. From this time
on the regiment participated in many of the most bitter battles of the Civil
War. During its period of service the regiment lost 17 officers and 259 men,
including Colonel Sherrill.
