CANANDAIGUA DAILY
MESSENGER January 25, 1957
A
picture and story about Mary appeared in this newspaper.
Mrs. John F. Southworth Royal Neighbor Oracle Mrs. John
Southworth Came Here From Ireland in 1912
Canandaigua
has definitely changed since I first arrived here from Ireland. Mrs. John F.
Southworth, 235 Center Street in an interview earlier in the week, told us
she came to Canandaigua August 17, 1912 from Galway, Ireland. She was just 21
years old.
Born
in Ireland, Miss Mary Murphy had relatives in this country including a
sister.
Sister Mary Eunice, in Blessed Sacrament in Rochester.
When I came here Mrs. Southworth continued, there were
approximately 20 other Irish girls all working in Canandaigua. We had loads of
fun, working for but a few dollars a week, I really believe we had more to do
and more fun than the girls have now.
On
our days off we would take a boat ride up the lake. Vacations? Dr. John
Jewett had a cottage which he loaned us and James Potter of West
Gibson Street, transported us in his horse and buggy. When we had free time of
an evening, a big treat was to walk downtown for a dish of ice cream. For ultra
excitement we took a trolley ride to Rochester!
But,
Mrs. Southworth continued, we seemed to have more genuine fun than the
young folks do today. We had dances in the large barns out in the country with
wonderful sleigh rides during the winter months. Even the weather seemed
different. In those days winter was winter and there was no mistaking it and
summer, well, summer was what you expect summer to be. Nowadays we get a
combination of all seasons rolled into each season.
Mary Murphy became the bride of Francis Redfern in 1915 in
a ceremony performed in St. Mary's Church by the Rev. James T. Dougherty. Mr.
Redfern died in 1945.
The
former Miss Murphy married again in 1947 when she became Mrs. John F.
Southworth. Her husband is retired but extremely active.
During the cold weather he often helps Mrs. Southworth with her
housework, for they have a rather large place. The work gets done so much easier
and more quickly when both of us do it, my house is clean and I have time for
the many community activities taking place in Canandaigua. In the warmer weather
Mr. Southworth gets out and helps others with their gardens, lawns and
trimming hedges.
Always
active in the affairs of Canandaigua, Mrs. Southworth has been a Red
Cross worker, helped with the Community Chest and catered many times for large
public functions. She is oracle of the Royal Neighbors of America, junior regent
of the Women of the Moose, junior vice president of the Women's Relief Corps,
GAR, and an active member of the WRC, sewing unit which works for the Friendly
Red Door of the American Cancer Society. She is press correspondent of the Royal
Neighbors and also of the WRC. She is a member of St. Mary's Church.
In
1955, Mrs. Southworth returned to her native country for the first time
in 43 years when she visited her twin brother in Limerick City, Ireland.
While abroad she attended the wedding of her niece at High Gate Church in
London, and visited all the principal parts of the big city.
For the average tourist, Ireland seems as modern and busy as America. But
Mrs. Southworth feels that to get the true feeling of the country one
should visit the small towns and visit with the Irish country people.
She feels there isn't any place like the United States for a man or a
woman to get ahead.
Shortly
after her return to her home here, she sponsored her nephew and his family to
make their home in the states. Now she expects that his sister will arrive here
in March when she too will decide to live in this area permanently. Of course, Mrs.
Southworth's greatest hope is that her twin brother, a retired railroad man,
will make a visit here, staying for several months.
Mrs. Southworth has three children, Mrs. Emmett Finagan Jr., of Lafayette Highway, Mrs. William B. Rayburn, Grandview Park, and George Redfern, South Main Street. She also is the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren.
