BIRTHS - REDFERN At Memorial Hospital April 28, 1925, to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Redfern of Pleasant Street, a daughter. Margaret died December 30, 1997 Canandaigua, New York, at 72 years of age.

CANANDAIGUA - Margaret Peg Rayburn, 72, of Fallbrook Park, died Tuesday, December 30, 1997 at Thompson Hospital. Mrs. Rayburn was born April 28, 1925 in Canandaigua, and was the daughter of Francis and Mary Murphy Redfern. She was a graduate of Canandaigua Academy, class of 1944, and had been a member of St. Mary's Church. While living in Kenosha, Wisconsin, she had been active with many civic and community organizations.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, William B. Rayburn, a daughter, and son in law, Kathleen and Kevin Burris of Bloomingdale, Illinois, three sons and a daughter in law, John Rayburn of Canandaigua, William and Amy Rayburn of Kirkville, and James Rayburn of Bloomfield, six grandchildren, Steve, Paul, Kristen, Jennifer, Glenn, Amanda, Erica and Mark, and three great grandchildren, Kevin, Sarah, and Dominick. She was predeceased by her son, Stephen in 1950. Friends may call at Kennedy at 15 Bristol Street. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.

She married William Busby Rayburn Canandaigua, New York, August 24, 1946.

RAYBURN - REDFERN

In St. Mary's Church, Saturday, August 24, took place the marriage of Miss Margaret M. Redfern, daughter of Mrs. Mary Redfern, South Main Street, to William B. Rayburn, Hubbell Street, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Rayburn, Rochester, and Earl Rayburn, Marathon, formerly of Canandaigua. The Rev. William L. Reed received the vows.

Given in marriage by her brother, George F. Redfern, the bride was attended by her sister, Mrs. Emmett Finagan, Jr., Lafayette Highway. Edward B. Andross, cousin of the bridegroom, was best man and ushers were Walter Mace and William A. Sage, this city.

A wedding breakfast was served to 28 at McKenzies Lake View Inn, East Lake Road. The bride's cake, the bridal bouquets and candelabra decorated the table. A reception for 150 guests was held in the home of the bride's mother. After a trip to New York City, Mr. and Mrs. Rayburn will live in Canandaigua. The bridegroom served 33 months with the Navy Air Corps, including 11 months in the Pacific Theater. Both he and his bride attended St. Mary's school and Canandaigua Academy.

At 31 years of age Margaret became the mother of James Rayburn Canandaigua, New York, October 1956.

Engagement Announced

Mrs. Mary Redfern of South Main Street has announced the engagement of her daughter, Miss Margaret Redfern, to William Rayburn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Rayburn, of this city. Mr. Rayburn left Saturday to begin his boot training at the Sampson Naval Training Station. No date set for the wedding.

George Francis⁴ Redfern was born Canandaigua, New York May 06, 1918. George died September 03, 1983 Los Angeles, California, at 65 years of age. He married Elizabeth Keane in Rush, New York, July 04, 1938.

James Redfern, 40, Dies Evening Tribune Reporter

James F. Redfern, a staff writer for the Evening Tribune who specialized in covering Mexico and a former war correspondent in Viet Nam, died yesterday at a local hospital after a brief illness. He was 40. Among his recent assignments were the visit of Pope John Paul II to Mexico and a continuing assessment of border problems.

A native of Canandaigua, NY, Redfern was reared in Arizona. While in High School, he covered sports for the Arizona Republic in Phoenix, then became a full time staff member. He later worked for newspapers in Amarillo, Texas, and Honolulu. He joined The Tribune in 1964, and about a year later he left for four years of study at the University of Americas in Mexico, where he earned a degree in economics. He was fluent in Spanish.

Redfern served three years in the Army's Green Berets in this country. When he went to Vietnam, it was as a civilian, to cover the war for Copley News Service, and later as a public relations officer for an American building firm there, for a total of three years. He also worked in public relations for the 1974 World's Fair in Spokane, Washington. He rejoined The Tribune in April 1978 to focus on Mexico and Latin America.

He is survived by his wife, Marisa, his father, George, of Maywood, Calif, his mother, Betty Ore, of Phoenix, and two half brothers, John Ore and Michael Ore of Tempe, Arizona. Services are pending. He married Marisa.

Rev. Abner⁷ Reed was born in Simsbury, Conn. January 06, 1796. Rev. died September 17, 1862 Bristol, New York, at 66 years of age. He married Lorana Case February 14, 1819. Lorana was born Bristol, New York February 08, 1802. Lorana was the daughter of James Case and Betsey Hicks. Lorana died March 08, 1886 Bristol, New York, at 84 years of age.

Martha B. Reed was born Bristol, New York July 31, 1860. The birthplace is probably correct since the parents lived in Bristol in 1860. Her obituary gives Canandaigua as place of birth. Her death record shows Bristol as well. Martha died September 05, 1919 Canandaigua, New York, at 59 years of age.

VANVECHTEN - The death of Mrs. Martha B. VanVechten, wife of Herman W. VanVechten, occurred at her home on Howell Street on Friday, following a long illness. Deceased was born in Canandaigua on July 31, 1860.

There survive besides her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Franklin J. Gray of Montclair, NJ., and Mrs. Harry M. Smith of Canandaigua, one sister, Mrs. Warner J. Simonds of Canandaigua, and two brothers, George and Ruel Reed of Bristol Center.

Funeral held at the home on Monday. Her body was interred 1919 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery.

She married Herman W. VanVechten Canandaigua, NY, September 01, 1880.

Married on Wednesday September 1st at 1 PM, Mr. Herman VanVechten, of this place, to Miss Martha Reed, at her father's residence in Bristol. On their return Saturday evening they were very much surprised by a very pleasant and greatly esteemed reception given at his boarding place, Mr. Charles Corser. There were about 50 relatives and friends in attendance, also the Victor Concert band, which furnished music for the occasion were afterwards invited to partake of the luxuries which were supplied in abundance.

Herman was born Victor, New York May 16, 1857. Herman was the son of John VanVechten and Hannah Pamela Cline. Herman died October 05, 1925 Canandaigua, New York, at 68 years of age.

HERMAN VANVECHTEN

The death of Herman VanVechten aged 68 years, a well known Canadaiguan and a lifelong resident of Ontario County occurred suddenly at his home on Howell Street on Monday about 1 PM following a stroke of apoplexy.

He was the son of John and Anna Cline VanVechten, and was born in Victor in 1857. He had been a cigar salesman traveling and retail since he was about 18 years of age having for about thirty years conducted a retail tobacco store in the Grieve block until he recently sold out to George Hyland, and retired on account of poor health. On coming here from Victor 44 years ago he purchased the block from the owners. Since that time he has repurchased it and resold it twice.

Mr. VanVechten was a member of the Canandaigua Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellows, and Merrill Hose Company. Mrs. VanVechten died several years ago. Deceased leaves two daughters, Mrs. Harry M. Smith of Canandaigua, Mrs. Franklin J. Gray of Springfield Mass., four grandchildren, Isobel and Helen Smith of Canandaigua, Donald and Martha Jane Gray of Springfield. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery.

OBITUARY VANVECHTEN

The death of Herman VanVechten occurred at his home on Howell street, Canandaigua, Monday afternoon, October 5th, following a stroke of apoplexy. He was in his usual health on Saturday, but became ill on Sunday morning.

Mr. VanVechten was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John VanVechten of Victor, and was born here in 1857. He attended district schools, the Victor Union School and the Brockport Normal School. At the age of 17 years he became a clerk in Moore and Powell's general store, and a year later went on the road as a cigar salesman for the firm. He continued that work until 1880, when he went into business for himself.

In 1881 he removed to Canandaigua, where he has since resided. He retired from business as a wholesale and retail cigar and tobacco dealer several years ago, because of poor health. He had been a member of the Canandaigua Masonic Lodge for over 38 years, and had served as treasurer of the organization. He belonged to the Canandaigua Odd Fellows lodge and for many years was president of the Odd Fellows Temple corporation. He also belonged to the Merrill Hose Company and had been one of its trustees.

He was fond of hunting and fishing and for many years had a yacht on Canandaigua Lake. Mr. VanVechten was a descendant of Teunis Dirksen VanVechten, who came to America with his wife and children and two slaves from Holland in 1638, settling in Greenbush, near Albany.

Mrs. VanVechten died several years ago. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Harry M. Smith of Canandaigua, and Mrs. Franklin J. Gray of Springfield, Mass, besides four grandchildren. The funeral was held from the home of Mrs. Harry M. Smith, Thursday afternoon. Rev. Dascomb E. Forbush, pastor of the Canandaigua Congregational church officiated. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

A very pretty morning wedding was celebrated in the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Elias L. Richardson, in Perinton at 9 AM on Wednesday September 27, 1916 when their daughter, Miss Mary Adelphia Richardson was united in marriage to Charles Edward Lovejoy, son of Mrs. Catherine Lovejoy of this Village. The Rev. W. H. White, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church of Macedon, performed the ceremony.

The bride and groom received the wedding guests and were unattended. Only immediate relatives of the bride and groom witnessed the ceremony. A sumptuous wedding breakfast was served at 11 o'clock by a Pittsford caterer. Gifts to the bride were many and beautiful including much silver.

Out of town guests were the bride's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ketchum of Pittsford, and Miss Marjorie Gunnison of Sheldrake Springs, a niece of the groom. Mr. and Mrs. Lovejoy left shortly after the wedding breakfast for a few days automobile trip. On their return they will establish their home on the groom's farm, situated four miles north of this village. Both bride and groom are lifetime residents of this vicinity.

The bride graduated from Victor High school with the class of 1914, and afterward entered the nurses training class in Thompson Memorial hospital in Canandaigua. The groom is a member of the class of 1913, Victor High school. A year spent in the study of medicine in Buffalo Medical College convinced him that farming was more his liking, and he has been successful in that pursuit.
