OBITUARY - SCANTLIN
Funeral
services were held yesterday Thursday morning, from St. Mary's Church, for Mrs.
Mary
Deere Scantlin, 97, who died in her home in Chapel Street, Tuesday,
December 14, 1943, after a brief illness. Interment was made in Calvary
Cemetery.
Mrs.
Scantlin believed to have been Canandaigua's oldest resident, was born in
Ireland, July 6, 1846, and came to America 84 years ago. She had lived in
Canandaigua all but two years of those years, and for some years past had kept
house for her son in law, Charles O'Reiley, doing all of the household
tasks despite her advanced years. She was active and alert and recalled with
regret that she had seen four wars during her lifetime.
On
the occasion of her 97th birthday, last July, she had said she did not
anticipate reaching the century mark, but did want to live to see the return
from the current war of three grandsons. Left
a widow when her husband the late William Scantlin died, soon after
moving into the Chapel Street home in which she lived for so many years, Mrs.
Scantlin reared six children through her own efforts.
She
is survived by three sons, Daniel, John, and Thomas Scantlin, all of
Rochester, nine grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
Her
body was interred 1943 Canandaigua, New
York, Calvary Cemetery.
