SHAW - SHEELER

Gideon¹ Shaw was born in Washington Co., New York January 02, 1810. Gideon died July 29, 1892 Victor, New York, at 82 years of age.

Gideon Shaw died at the Homeopathis Hospital, Rochester, last Friday. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church Sunday at 4 PM.

Mr. Shaw came to Victor from Herkimer County when a young man working at the carpenter's trade until the building of the NYCRR in which he took part, subsequently becoming a section master which position he held until promoted to station agent here, from which declining years compelled his resignation about 13 years ago.

Mrs. Sibley Power of Farmington, Mrs. Adeli Campbell of Rochester, Mrs. Charles Millinan of Suspension Bridge, Mrs. L. W. Searcy of New York City, and Charles Shaw of Racine, Wis. are his surviving children. His body was interred 1892 Victor, New York, Victor Village Cemetery.

He married twice. He married Sarah VanDenbergh. Sarah was born in Rensselear Co. New York 1812. Sarah was the daughter of Abraham F. VanDenbergh and Crista Shulters. Sarah died November 07, 1884 Victor, NY, at 72 years of age.

VICTOR - The funeral of Mrs. Gideon Shaw who died on Friday afternoon, was held at the Presbyterian Church on Monday. She was a faithful member of that church for many years and now rests in hopes of a glorious resurrection. She leaves a husband and four daughters.

Sarah became the mother of Charles H. Shaw 1847. He married 2nd Mrs. Mary Stanton Victor, New York, April 03, 1886.

MARRIED SHAW - STANTON

At the Presbyterian parsonage in Victor, on Saturday, April 3d, 1886, by the Rev. C. W. Backus, Mr. Gideon Shaw, of Victor, and Mrs. Mary Stanton, of Rochester.

Alida M. Shaw was born Victor, New York August 27, 1838. Alida died January 28, 1918 Victor, New York, at 79 years of age.

Obituary - Died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles A. Rowley, Victor, following a long illness. She was one of four daughters of Gideon and Sara VanDenberg Shaw and was born August 27, 1838.

On January 22, 1862 she was united in marriage to M. H. Sibley Power, of Farmington. Fourteen years ago they retired from farm life and had since resided in Victor. Ten years ago she became totally blind. Interment was made in village cemetery.

OBITUARY - POWER

Death has again, with relentless call, visited our village, and removed Mrs. Alida M. Power, who had journeyed long and patiently through various afflictions, waiting and listening for the summons which came at 10 o'clock on Monday morning, January 28th. Mrs. Power passed from darkness into light after many tedious shut-in days, which were bravely and patiently borne. She was 79 years of age, and suffered from a complication of diseases, together with the infirmities of age. The immediate cause of death was bronchial pneumonia.

Alida M. Shaw, was born in the town of Victor, August 27th 1838, one of the four daughters born to Gideon and Sara VanDenbergh Shaw. These sisters grew to young womanhood together, and were known by the residents of Victor as the comely Shaw girls. All were music lovers, possessing good voices, and in the early 60's they were a pleasing addition to the Presbyterian church choir, where they sang for many years.

On January 22nd 1862, Alida M. Shaw became the wife of M. H. Sibley Power, of Farmington, and for many years they resided on a farm in Farmington where two daughters were born to them.

In 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Power retired from active farm life, and came to Victor, where they have since resided with Dr. and Mrs. Charles A. Rowley. Ten years ago, Mrs. Power became the victim of a sad affliction, that of total blindness. Shut out from the sunlight and wholly dependant upon others to satisfy her wants, she has been a wonderful example of patience.

Her daughter Mrs. C. A. Rowley, who has tenderly cared for her, can recall but one murmur against her lot during the years of darkness, and that was when she once said, oh my, why must I be blind. Her sense of hearing was very acute, and music was her greatest delight.

Besides her husband, M. H. Sibley Power, Mrs. Power is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Stella Rowley of Victor, and Mrs. A. B. Parmele of Canandaigua, by two granddaughters, Gladys J. Rowley, Victor, Margaret E. Parmele of Canandaigua, and by a sister, Mrs. L. W. Seavey of Mamaroneck, NY.

Funeral services were held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Rowley Thursday afternoon, Rev. Frank W. Hill pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment in family plot Victor Village Cemetery. Her body was interred 1918 Victor, New York, Victor Village Cemetery.

She married M. H. Sibley Power January 22, 1862. M. was born 1839. M. was the son of Waterman Power and Phebe C.M. died February 17, 1925 Victor, New York, at 85 years of age.

DEATH Mark Sibley Power at Victor February 17, 1925 aged 85 years.

Sibley Power, a well known citizen of Victor, this county, died at his home in that village on Tuesday aged 85 years. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Albert B. Parmele of Canandaigua. A brother D. Dewitt Power of Main Street South, this city, also survives. Interment at Victor Cemetery.

POWER - Mark Sibley Power, 85 years old died Tuesday at the home of his son in law, Dr. Charles Rowley of East Main Street. Mr. Power was born in Farmington, and had lived in Victor for thirty years. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. A. B. Parmele of Canandaigua, two grand daughters, Mrs. Ross Gunn of New Haven, Conn., and Miss Margaret Power of Canandaigua, and a brother, Dewitt Power of Canandaigua.

At 35 years of age Alida became the mother of Florence A. Power Farmington, New York, March 13, 1874.

Mrs. Sibley Power, of Victor, has been the guest of her daughter, Mrs. A. B. Parmele, West Gibson Street.

Norman B.⁴ Shaw was born May 06, 1836. Norman died November 19, 1930 at 94 years of age. His body was interred 1930 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery. Section 11.

He married Sarah Jeanette Lincoln May 16, 1866. Sarah was born February 07, 1844. Sarah was the daughter of Marvin D. Lincoln and Rhoda Perego. Sarah died July 05, 1911 Reed Corners, New York, at 67 years of age.

SHAW - OBITUARY

At her home in the town of Gorham on Wednesday morning occurred the death of Mrs. Sarah J. Shaw, wife of Norman B. Shaw, aged 68 years. Death was due to apoplexy, Mrs. Shaw having suffered a stroke the previous Friday.

Besides her husband there survive four sons, Dudley of Cohoes, Alfred and Irving who live at home, and Hiram of Gorham. A sister, Mrs. Joseph Fransisco of this village, and a brother, Artemus Lincoln of this town survive. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock this PM and Rev. W. H. Skeels of Ithaca will officiate.

Her body was interred 1911 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery.

Florence D. Shaw was born July 25, 1869. Florence died May 28, 1908 Canandaigua, New York, at 38 years of age.^[i] [i]. Canandaigua City Clerk office record number 4221.

SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. JOPSON

The death of Mrs. Florence M. Jopson, aged 38 years, occurred yesterday afternoon at about half past four o'clock, from heart failure. Mrs. Jopson had been living with her sister Mrs. A. M. Smith on Mason Street since the death of her husband about two months ago. Previous to that time her home had been in Centerfield. She had grieved constantly over her bereavement and is thought to have been partly the cause of her death, although she had been a sufferer with heart trouble.

She is survived by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Norman Shaw of Reed Corners, four brothers, Dudley Shaw of Troy, Alfred of California, Hiram and Irving of Reed Corners, and one sister, Mrs. Ella Smith of this place. She had been ill for less than one day. Her body was interred 1908 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery.

She married John M. Jopson January 16, 1889. John was born New York May 1866. John was the son of Mark A. Jopson and Hannah Appleton. John died March 27, 1908 Centerfield, NY, at 41 years of age.

Despondency Led to Suicide

John Jopson committed suicide by hanging in a shed on the farm of his father, Mark A. Jopson at Centerfield on Friday. He had left the house during the forenoon to work in the woods and when he did not return for dinner, his wife became anxious about him and a search was begun.

His body was found by his brother Herbert, hanging from a rafter in an open shed near the barn. Life was extinct. It is thought that he had become despondent over his failure to make satisfactory plans for the season as he had hoped to work his father's farm.

He was 45 years old and with his wife resided in the tenant house on his father's farm. His father, step mother, two sisters, Mrs. Black of Centerfield, and Mrs. Earl Stanley of Canandaigua, and three brothers, Herbert, George and Raymond also survive. Funeral held from his home. Interment at Woodlawn.

Dudley L.⁵ Shaw was born Reed Corners, New York March 14, 1868. Dudley died May 05, 1948 in Hartford, Michigan, at 80 years of age.

D. L. SHAW 80, DIES IN MICHIGAN

Word has been received here of the death of Dudley L. Shaw, 80, native of Reed Corners and a former resident of Canandaigua in Hartford, Michigan on May 5, 1948. Mr. Shaw had been in failing health for several months. Mr. Shaw was born at Reed Corners on March 14, 1868, the son of Norman B. and Jeanette Lincoln Shaw.

He resided in the Reed Corners area for about 21 years and then moved to Canandaigua where he was employed for about 30 years as an engineer for the Lisk Company. He moved to Hartford, Michigan 28 years ago and was associated for 20 years with an electric light company as an inspector. He retired about 8 years ago.

Mrs. Shaw, who survives is the former Miss Inez Brockelbank of Canandaigua. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw lived in South Main street near Clark street during their residence in this city.

Besides Mrs. Shaw there survives a son, Dr. Norman D. Shaw, a doctor in Dearborn, Mich., three grandchildren, Norman Jr., Edward E. , and Mrs. Dorothy Harmel, all of Dearborn, two great grandchildren, two brothers Irving Shaw and Hiram Shaw, both of Reed Corners. A daughter Mary Emma, born to Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, died in infancy.

Funeral services were held on May 7, and burial was made in the family plot in Lester Cemetery, Quincy Mass. This lot was purchased by O. E. Brockelbank before the Civil War. His body was interred 1948 in Quincy, Mass., Lester Cemetery.

Barbara A.² Shearer was born New York 1892. She married Leon J. Pierce December 27, 1911. Leon was born December 08, 1889.^[ii] Leon was the son of Robert Melvin Pierce and Ida M. Pierce . Leon died January 19, 1959 at 69 years of age. At 23 years of age Leon became the father of Melvin Thomas Pierce Canandaigua, New York, January 12, 1913. [ii]. BORN - PIERCE At Canandaigua, January 12, 1913, to Mr. and Mrs. Leon Pierce, a son.

Augusta Sheeler was born Mendon, New York December 13, 1877. Augusta died July 17, 1964 Holcomb, New York, at 86 years of age.

Mrs. Arthur Buckelew - HOLCOMB

Funeral service for Mrs. Augusta Sheeler Buckelew, 86, wife of Arthur G. Buckelew, was held at the Wheeler Funeral Home in East Bloomfield Sunday afternoon. Burial was in East Bloomfield Cemetery. Mrs. Buckelew died Friday at her home following a long illness.

She was born December 13, 1877, in the Town of Macedon. After her marriage to Mr. Buckelew, they lived in Bristol until 1922 when they purchased their present home on Main Street. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and for more than 20 years served as treasurer of its missionary society. A life member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, she served as treasurer of the Bloomfield Unit from 1929 until it disbanded several years ago. She was a member of the first Home Bureau Unit in the area and more recently a member of the East Bloomfield Day unit of the Home Demonstration Service.

Besides her husband she is survived by four daughters, Mrs. George Catherine Gifford, Gorham, Mrs. DeWitt Ruth Mowry, Holcomb, Mrs. Ralph Edith Harris, Penn Yan, and Mrs. Charles Mary Elizabeth Wynand, Rochester, one sister, Miss Mary Sheeler, residing at the Buckelew home, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She married Arthur Garfield Buckelew Mendon, New York, November 04, 1906.

Surprise Wedding - The congregation of the Presbyterian Church at Mendon, enjoyed a pleasant surprise at the close of the morning service Sunday. After the benediction had been pronounced, the organist, Miss May Whitcomb began Lohengrins Wedding March to the strains of which a bridal party passed down the aisle to the altar where they were met by the pastor, Rev. J. H. Funnell, who performed the marriage ceremony in the presence of a large congregation.

The contracting parties were Miss Augusta Scheeler of Mendon, and Mr. Arthur Buckelew of Bristol. They were attended by Miss Mary Scheeler and Mr. George Scheeler, sister and brother of the bride. The ceremony was over and the happy couple had departed before the congregation had recovered from their surprise.

Arthur Garfield Buckelew was born Bristol, New York October 31, 1880. Arthur was the son of William Henry Harrison Buckelew and Euseba Helena Ferrin. Arthur died June 12, 1967 Canandaigua, New York, at 86 years of age.

CANANDAIGUA - Arthur Garfield Buckelew, 86, of Holcomb, died this morning in the Elm Manor Nursing Home in Canandaigua. Final rites will be Wednesday in the Wheeler Funeral Home. Burial will be in East Bloomfield Cemetery.

He was married to the late Augusta Sheeler Buckelew. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1956. Mr. Buckelew was a retired farmer. He had operated a farm for many years. He was born in 1880 in Bristol, the son of William H. and Euseba Ferris Buckelew.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Charles Wynand, of Rochester, Mrs. Ralph Harris of Penn Yan, Mrs. Dewitt Mowry of Holcomb, and Mrs. George Gifford of Gorham, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Wilbur Ashley of Honeoye, 90 years old.

ARTHUR G. BUCKELEW - HOLCOMB

Arthur G. Buckelew, 86, died today at the Elm Manor in Canandaigua following a long period of ill health. A native of Bristol, he was born October 30, 1880, the son of William H. and Euseba Buckelew. He attended a barber school in New York City and opened a barber shop in Mendon, where in 1906 he married the former Miss Augusta Sheeler.

For several years he raised registered Oxford sheep and raspberry crops in Bristol before moving to Holcomb in 1921 where he operated a hatchery and apiary for many years. He was a member of the First Congregational church for 46 years and had served in many church offices and committees.

Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. George Katherine Gifford of Gorham, Mrs. DeWitt Ruth Mowry of Holcomb, Mrs. Ralph Edith Harris of Penn Yan, and Mrs. Charles Mary Elizabeth Wynand of Rochester, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Lillian Ashley of Honeoye. Burial will be in East Bloomfield Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
