SHENKMAN  - SIMONDS

Louis Nathan¹ Shenkman  was born in Derevsie Lichnie, Russia September 06, 1889.  Louis died September 25, 1973 Canandaigua, New York, at 84 years of age.

 Louis N. Shenkman, 84, of 3409 W. Lake Road, a Canandaigua business man for more than 50 years, died this morning in Thompson Hospital after a short illness.

Mr. Shenkman, a native of Russia, formerly was chairman of the board of Shenkman's Inc., a corporation which owns Shenkman's men's clothing store, The Norma Shop, a ladies apparel store, and Davidson's shoe store. Mr. Shenkman began his men's clothing business here in 1916.  In 1936, his firm bought The Norma Shop, and in 1947, he acquired the shoe store. 

 In 1949 a major fire swept the main store but it was rebuilt, expanded and modernized and the present store was reopened in 1950. Active management today is in charge of his son, Bernard Shenkman.  Victor Aronson son in law of Mr. Shenkman is manager of the Norma Shop. He was a member of the Canandaigua Rotary Club, the Elks, the Odd Fellows, the Masonic Lodge 294, and Merrill Hose.  He is a former director of the Lincoln Rochester Bank and formerly headed the Retail Clothing Association.

Survivors include his son, Bernard of Canandaigua, one daughter, Mrs. Victor Norma Aronson of Canandaigua, four grandchildren, four gr grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mary Rabinowitz of Brooklyn, NY, several nieces and nephews.  The Kennedy and son Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements announced, there will be no prior calling hours.  Burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Rochester.

Norma Shenkman was born Canandaigua, New York 1922.  Norma died October 23, 1996 Canandaigua, New York, at 74 years of age.

                                                                   NORMA  ARONSON

Canandaigua - Norma Aronson, 75, of 190 Parrish Street died Wednesday, October 23, 1996 at her home.  A native of Canandaigua, Mrs. Aronson was associated with her family's clothing businesses, Shenkman's, The Norma Shop, and Davidson's Shoes, on South Main Street.

 She was an avid bridge player and she and her late husband, Victor, owned several thoroughbred race horses. Mrs. Aronson was a member of several community organizations including the Granger Homestead, Sonnenberg Gardens, and the Thompson Hospital Guild.

 The widow of Victor Aronson, who died in 1990, she is survived by her brother and sister in law, Bernard and Henrietta Shenkman of Canandaigua and Naples Fla., several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a son Marc.  Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Geneva.

                                      She married Victor Aronson 1942.  Victor was born 1916.  Victor died February 10, 1990 Canandaigua, New York, at 73 years of age.

                                                          FORMER  MERCHANT  MOURNED  CANANDAIGUA          

Victor Aronson, distinguished himself in Canandaigua through much more than his duties as manager of the Norma Shop. He was known by many as a community leader who loved to work for his city. 

Mr. Aronson, 74, died Saturday at Thompson Hospital.  Bernard Shenkman, who was chief executive officer of Shenkman's Inc, a Canandaigua clothing store, for many years, remembered Mr. Aronson not only as a business partner and brotherinlaw, but as a lifelong friend.  He was one of my best friends besides being my brotherinlaw, Shenkman said. He was a great guy. He did good things for the community. 

Community service was an important area of Mr. Aronson's life, according to some of his friends in Canandaigua. He was involved in American Legion, Kiwanis Club, Merrill Hose and the Chamber of Commerce, of which he was president in 1975.                                      

                                                                           VICTOR  ARONSON

CANANDAIGUA  -  Canandaigua businessman Victor Aronson of 1126 West Lake Road, died Saturday, Feb 10, at Thompson Hospital. Mr. Aronson, 74, was a partner in Shenkman Inc. Clothing Store on South Main Street from 1945 until his retirement in 1975.

 He attended Cornell University and was past president of the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce.  He was a member of the Canandaigua Kiwanis Club, Canandaigua Country Club, Merrill Hose, and the Canandaigua American Legion. He was also a member of the Canandaigua Elks Club and Temple Beth El in Geneva.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Shenkman Aronson, two brothers, Norman Aronson of Stuart, Fla., and  Robert Aronson of Long Island, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Marc Aronson. Burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Geneva.

Bernard² Shenkman  was born Rochester, New York September 06, 1915.   He married Henrietta Bills 1941. Henrietta was born 1920.  Henrietta was the daughter of Lester L. Bills and Ethel Washburn.  Henrietta died January 10, 2001 Canandaigua, New York, at 80 years of age.  Her body was interred 2001 Geneva, New York, Glenwood Cemetery.   

At 22 years of age Henrietta became the mother of Shelley Shenkman Seattle, Washington, February 12, 1943.

 BIRTH -  SHENKMAN    At Seattle, Washington, February 12, 1943, a daughter to Staff Sgt. and Mrs. Bernard Shenkman. Mrs. Shenkman was Miss Henrietta Bill, of Canandaigua.

  DOUGLASS -   In this town, June 29th, 1884, Assenath Douglass, aged 84 years, 4 months.

                            She married Samuel Douglass in Pittstown, New York, February 22, 1820.   Samuel was born Rensselear County, New York December 05, 1802.  Samuel was the son of Samuel Douglass and Priscilla Wood.  He married an unknown person.  Samuel died February 02, 1882 Canandaigua, New York, at 79 years of age.

  DIED   -   DOUGLASS       In this town on Thursday February 2, 1882, Samuel Douglass, aged 82 years.

David² Shulters was born Rensselear County, New York October 15, 1811.  David died November 07, 1890 Mendon, New York, at 79 years of age. 

Honeoye Times November 13, 1890 newspaper stated he was an aged and respected resident of this town, died at his home near Miller's Corners, Friday last, aged 70 years. Mr. Shulters father was one of the early settlers of this town. The funeral was held Monday from his late residence, the pastor of the Mendon Baptist church officiating.

One week prior to his death there was another notice in the same paper stating that Mr. David Shulters is seriously ill, and there are grave doubts as to his recovery, as he is quite advanced in years. Leonard Shulters, of Batavia, is visiting his sick father, David Shulters.

Henry Pettis⁵ Simmons  was born Bristol, New York September 03, 1818.  Henry died February 11, 1883 at 64 years of age.  His body was interred 1883 Bristol, New York, Evergreen Cemetery. 

                       He married Julia F. Dake.  Julia was born in Saratoga County, New York March 1823.  Julia was the daughter of John Dake.  Julia died June 05, 1906 Canandaigua, New York, at 83 years of age.

DIED -   SIMMONS           In Canandaigua, June 5, Mrs. Julia F. Simmons, aged nearly 86 years.

OBITUARY -  Yesterday morning at the home of her son, Constant Simmons, of Sand Street, with whom she resided, the death occurred of Mrs. Julia F. Simmons, aged nearly 86 years. Besides her son at whose home her death occurred, she is survived by one other son, Harry R. Simmons, of Rochester. 

Constant⁶ Simmons was born 1856.  Constant died March 30, 1915 Canandaigua, New York, at 58 years of age.

                                              OBITUARY    CONSTANT  SIMMONS

The death of Constant Simmons, aged fifty eight years, occurred at his home on Telyea Street, on Tuesday night, March 30. He leaves his wife, two sons, and seven daughters. Mrs. C. B. Jones of Bristol, Mrs. Emory Savage and Harry Simmons of Orleans, the Misses Luella, Esther, Alta, Leta, and Florence Simmons and Constant Simmons, of this city, and one brother, Henry P. Simmons of Rochester.

The funeral was held at Woodlawn chapel on Friday afternoon, the Rev. E. P. Wood of the Universalist church officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn. His body was interred 1915 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery. 

                        He married Helen M. Briggs Shortsville, New York, December 24, 1877. I also found a marriage notice in a book at the Hopewell Ontario County Archives which gives a date of Feb. 11, 1874.

In Shortsville, December 8, 1877, by Rev C. C. Thorne, Mr. Constance Simmons and Miss Helen M. Briggs, both of Bristol.  

          The Ontario County Times, January 20, 1886, Bristol heading, the following piece,

Constant Simmons, having purchased the interest in the harness shop of S. H. Wheeler and Company, last spring, and having continued in the business until the present time, would tender his thanks to his customers for past favors, and hopes to retain their confidence which will be duly appreciated. A good supply of ready made harness work on hand. Also blankets, robes, whips, bells etc. Repairing done with neatness and dispatch. Call and see.

Albert² Simonds was born New Hampshire 1808.  Albert died January 08, 1899 Victor, New York, at 90 years of age.

DIED -    SIMONDS  At Victor, Jan 8, 1899, Albert Simonds, aged 90 years, 2 months, 21 days.

VICTOR -  Albert Simonds, one of the most widely known residents of Western New York, died suddenly at the residence of his son, C. Lewis Simonds, in this village, Sunday morning, at the advanced age of 90 years.

He was born in Enfield, New Hampshire, October 13, 1808, and came to Victor by stage, which was the only method of conveyance at that time.  In the year 1832 he commenced his career as a businessman as a clerk in the first general store in this village.  At the end of five years he bought out his employer and for 47 years carried on an active prosperous business.  Although others were associated with him at times, his name was always at the head of the company.

Since his retirement from active life in 1884, the business has been conducted by his two sons, under the firm name of A. Simonds and Sons. Mr. Simonds was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, having united with it in 1837, and was at the time of his death, ruling elder, deacon and clerk of session in that organization.

He was twice married, his second wife dying in 1894. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Gilbert Turner, of Rochester, and three sons, George and Lewis Simonds, of this place, and Henry Simonds of Rochester. 

The funeral services were held at the home of Lewis Simonds Tuesday, Rev H. F. Ellinwood officiating. His body was interred 1899 Victor, New York, Boughton Hill Cemetery.

                     He married twice.  He married Caroline Mansfield.  Caroline was born New York 1824.  Caroline died August 23, 1894 Victor, New York, at 70 years of age.

DIED -   SIMONDS -    At Victor, August 23,1894, Mrs. Caroline Mansfield Simonds, wife of Albert Simonds, aged 70 years.

Harriet Elizabeth³ Simonds was born New York March 19, 1838.  Harriet died February 18, 1898 Victor, New York, at 59 years of age.

At Victor, February 18, 1898, Mrs. Harriet Eliza Simonds Bacon, wife of Orin S. Bacon, aged 59 years. Interment at Canandaigua. Her body was interred 1898 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery.

                            She married Orin S. Bacon.   Orin was born New York March 1837.  Orin was the son of Rev. Hiram Bacon .  Orin died July 22, 1901 Canandaigua, New York, at 64 years of age.  Ontario County Death Record at City Clerk office is number 1491.

                                                             OBITUARY    BACON

The announcement of the death of Orin S. Bacon on Monday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward W. Simmons, was received throughout the village with profound sorrow and regret. Mr. Bacon had been for many years a prominent figure in the business circles of this place, and his death is a public loss.  Mr. Bacon had been ill for many weeks, and during that time had endured great sufferings which was made more intense the last four days of his life by the fracture of a limb just below the thigh, on Thursday, as he was being assisted from a chair to the bed.

While Mr. Bacon had been identified with Canandaigua since 1880, his home had not been here until 3 years ago, when upon the death of his wife in February 1898, he gave up the Victor residence and had since resided with his daughter, Mrs. Simmons.  Mr. Bacon's life had been exceedingly active and his success was due largely to his untiring energy, together with his splendid business ability.

He was born in this town March 29, 1837, and was therefore 64 years of age. His father was Rev. Hiram Bacon, a free will Baptist minister. The family moved to Potter when Mr. Bacon was a boy, and in the District school of that town and the Dundee Academy he received the education which contributed so largely to his future successes. 

 In 1855 he settled at Victor, and there for many years conducted a meat market and also carried on a real estate business. He was always closely identified with the best interest of the town.  He took an active part in the politics and in 1879 he was elected Sheriff by the Republicans of the county. Upon conclusion of his term of office, in 1883, he was appointed deputy revenue collector. In 1887 he became financial manager of McKechnie and Co. Bankers, and at the reorganization of that bank into the McKechnie Bank on March 1, 1899, he became its president. 

Mr. Bacon is survived by two daughters, Mrs. George M. Dunlop of Spring Valley, and Mrs. Edward W. Simmons, of this village, two sons, Orin S. Bacon, of this village, and Rev. Albert S. Bacon, of Niagara Falls, and two brothers, Rev. John S. Bacon and Daniel R. Bacon of Pultney. 

The funeral was held from the Simmons home on Wednesday afternoon, and services conducted by Rev. Charles N. Frost of Bath, formerly pastor of the Presbyterian church of Victor, and Rev. C. H. Dickenson. Interment was made in Woodlawn.
