This gentleman is located on Canal street near Penney's Union Hotel. His business is sign, carriage and ornamental painting, which he is prepared to execute in the most artistic manner, and at reasonable rates. Mr. Bush is prepared to exhibit specimens of his work, together with a list of references to any one desiring the same. Numerous signs for the merchants and business men of Port Jervis, painted by him, testify to the appreciation in which his work is held.
Dr. Barrett has been long known to the citizens of Port Jervis, as a skillful and reliable dentist, having practiced for years in the village. He is more widely known among scientists as a geologist, being the best authority upon the Geology of Orange County, of any citizens residing within its borders. The doctor has contributed numerous articles to the scientific world, which may be found in the Annals of the Lyceum of Natural History of New York. His "Notes upon the Lower Heiderberg Rocks,” read Nov. 13th, 1876, together with his researches in Paleontology, place him among the first scientists of to-day.
Mr. Bennet's establishment is located at No. 1 Main St., the business consisting of dry goods and groceries and general merchandise, together with marble and granite. Mr. Bennet has been engaged for some years in the marble business, and has furnished numerous monuments and tombstones for erection in the Laurel Grove Cemetery, also supplying furniture marble to dealers. He is known as a thorough reliable business man.
Mr. Caskey is an old resident of Port Jervis, and has conducted business here for years. The business consists of custom tailoring, and gent's furnishing goods; he is located at No 6 Ball street, where he has one of the best stores in the village. Mr. Caskey is one of the leading merchants of Port Jervis and is counted among her most substantial citizens
This establishment is known as the New York store, and is located at Nos. 83 and 85 Pike street, in the Port Jervis Opera House, it being one of the finest stores in the village. Mr. Jordan is a young man having established himself through his own merits. He has built up a fine business, having the leading dry goods trade of Port Jervis. Thoroughly alive to the demands of the community, he spares no effort to hold the trade he has established and please customers. He is a thorough business man, enterprising and reliable, and ranks among the best citizens of the place.
Whoever has resided in Port Jervis knows her leading crockery and glassware house, located at 101 Pike street. Mr. May is among the oldest and most influential citizens of Port Jervis, and has for years been identified with her progress and improvement; his business consists at present of crockery and glassware, making a specialty of lamp goods, together with auction and commission. He has a large trade, which is steadily increasing as his goods are staple, and prices low. During our acquaintance with him we have found him pleasant and, obliging, and advise our readers to call upon him when in need of anything in his line.
Dr. Mead makes a specialty of operative dentistry, in which he has been eminently successful, having performed numerous difficult and delicate operations, with skill and to the complete satisfaction of his patients. Dr. Mead is located at No. 8 Pike street, where he has fitted up parlors in superb style. All work warranted satisfactory.
This hotel is located upon cor Main and Canal streets, and is fitted up with all modern conveniences. Its proprietor Mr. Isaac Penney, is a landlord of experience, and has fully demonstrated that he knows how to keep a house; his table is always well supplied, his apartments always in order and beds clean and neat, while his prices are low, with special terms to boarders by the month.
The above firm is well known in Port Jervis as among the largest and best business firms of the village, they are located on the cor. Pike and Ball streets, where they do a custom tailor business, and gents furnishing goods, also dealing in hats and caps. They make a specialty of the latter, and can supply you with all the latest styles as soon as they are put in the market by the manufacturer. Their tailoring trade is largely in goods of their own manufacture, and they warrant all goods purchased of them. They also carry a large stock of underwear in their furnishing department, which they offer at low prices. Parties wishing to purchase will do well to give them a call and examine their stock.
This old and popular school has had over half a century of honorable existence as an Academy and boarding school. The date of its founding we have been unable to earn, or much of its early history, as its records were burned with the town records in 1842. Among its early instructors is mentioned the name of Noah Webster, who once taught the youth of Goshen here. Of its later instructors we mention, David Wells, Mr. Bradley, Dr. Townsend, D. L. Towle, D. K. Bull, Madams Brown, McClure and Plaisted, teachers at the time when the Goshen Academy was in operation. The old academy buildings have been torn down the present building is on East Main street opposite the Presbyterian Church. Its present principal, Mr. Joel Wilson, is a teacher of experience and has infused much of the old zeal and interest into the school since he took charge. It is conducted as a boarding school for boys, and a day school for pupils of both sexes. The Institution is admirably situated, its surroundings being beautiful and above all heathful. Courses of study, terms, etc., will be found in their advertisement in another part of this work.
Mr. Mills is agent of the N. Y. Mutual Life Insurance Company, one of the best and most favorably known Insurance companies in this country. The assets of the company are over eighty two millions with a surplus of nearly eleven million dollars. The Mutual Life Insurance Company of N. Y., is the oldest, largest and one of the best if not the best life insurance company in America. The officers of the company are gentlemen well known in the business world. Mr. Mills is well known to the people of Goshen as a business man; his office and residence is South street near the Erie R. R. Depot.
Mr. Riggs is at 86 West Main street, where he located in 1877, having purchased the business of Mr. Conrad Brown. Mr. Riggs, has had a large experience in his profession, were locating in Goshen and in his long practice he has won many friends, he is gentlemanly and obliging, understands fully the needs and demands of his calling, supplies the same satisfactorily, he is ready day or night to attend to all calls. We recommend him to any in need of his services as a fully reliable man.
