This firm began business in 1876 in Newburgh, locating at No. 19 Water St. The firm is composed of J. M. Gilles, J. R. Needham and J. A. Sands. The business consists of staple and fancy dry goods and millinery. Messrs. Gilles & Needham established the busines, Mr. Sands becoming a member of the firm in 1876. They do an extensive business and are classed among the leading business men of the city.
Mr. McCullough became proprietor of these works in 1865, and has since continued the same. This business was established in 1790 by Mr. John Currie, and is the oldest business of the kind in the county, the business consists of the manufacture of monuments and tombstones, mantels and furniture marble, etc., the shops are located on Front St., to 103. Mr. McCullough is also engaged in the wholesale and retail tobacco trade, and this business dates back to 1798, Mr. McCullough succeeding to this in 1844. He manufactures cigars and tobacco at 93 Front St., his store and salesroom being 70 Water St; he is the only tobacco manufacturer in Newburgh.
Mr. Brokaw is a gentlemen well known in Newburgh, having been engaged in business here since 1869. He deals in gents, ladies and childrens furnishing goods, carrying the largest stock of any house in the city, he makes a specialty of Cartwright & Warren's imported English underwear, gloves, handkerchiefs, scarfs, ties, umbrellas, etc. He manufactures and deals extensively in Brokaw's perfect fitting shirts, his location is 77 Water St.
Mr. Selleg has been engaged in furniture manufacture for upward of a quarter of a century, in 1876 he sold out to Peck, Van Dalfsen & Co and devoted his time to the exclusive manufacture of folding chairs from his own patents. He now makes over sixty different varieties of chairs, of which some fifty are protected by patents, a peculiarity of Mr. Selleg's trade is that of furnishing dwellings, which he frequently does, the carpets and furniture are matched, he furnishing all designs, notwithstanding the fact that he is totally blind. His factory is located at 75 Front St.
This establishment is located at 65 & 67 Western Ave., and was founded by Spier & Wilson in 1838, being the oldest foundry in the city. The firm conducted it until 1859, when the present proprietor succeeded to its management. The business consists of light castings for stove and agricultural implements. Mr. Speir is one of our best known citizens.
Mr. Magee has been engaged in his present business some over five years, he having been engaged in the grocery trade for a number of years previously, and is one of our best known citizens. He is an extensive dealer in gents and ladies boots and shoes, and everything pertaining to the retail trade of the same, carrying the largest stock of any dealer in Newburgh. He is located at No. 27 Water St.
The business was established in 1798, by Mr. John Brown, who continued the same until 1830, and was succeeded by J. S. & J. Brown, who conducted the business until 1847, when Mr. J. S. Brown took charge until 1856, and was succeeded by L. M. Smith & Co., and by I. M. Smith in 1857. In 1871, Mr. C. J Lawson became proprietor and has continued the business ever since, which consists of agricultural implements, hardware and house furnishing goods, he is located at 69 Water St.
In 1859 Alsdorf & Higby formed a partnership and established the boot and shoe trade, Mr. Higby soon retired and, in 1863, the firm of Alsdorf & Barnes was formed. About one year thereafter Mr. Barnes retired and in 1866 Mr. J. M. Stoutenburgh bought out Mr. Alsdorf and has since conducted the business, which he has added to until he now deals in boots and shoes, together with hats, caps, gloves and furs. He is sole agent for Chas. F. Fall's celebrated calf boots, and also sells E. C. Burt's ladies and children's shoes, Burt's & Mears men's wear. His location is 116 Water St.
This firm is located at No. 1 Front St., cor First, and although but recently established as a firm, the senior member Mr. W. H. Shannon is well known as a slate roofer and dealer, having had twenty-four years experience in the business. The firm is prepared at any time to fill all orders for slate roofing, using the best material, and warrant all their work to give satisfaction. They deal largely in marbleized slate mantels of unlimited variety of colors. They also keep in stock a large assortment of new and handsome designs of plaster centres and brackets for parlors, dining rooms, halls and arches; also grates and summer pieces.
New and handsome designs of iron roof crestings and finials for flat or steep roofs; rosin sized sheathing felt for lining frame buildings, ice houses, etc; also chemically prepared moth proof carpet felt. They offer the above goods at very low rates and will attend promptly and personally to all work or jobbing.
