 O. S. Burr & Co., Music Dealers.

The oldest house in the trade in this section is O. S. Burr & Co., 56 and, 58 Water st. successors of Demarest & Burr, who started business at 91 Water st. in March 1869.  They progressed steadily from year to year making no pretensions beyond what the amount trade done would warrant, until the early part of 1875, when they opened a branch store at Middletown.  This proved a good business operation besides offering greater advantages to their largely increasing patronage in the western part of Orange and the surrounding country.  At this time they controlled Orange, Sullivan, Ulster and a part of Dutchess counties for the sale of Mason & Hamlin and Estey Organs, and Weber and Steinway pianoes, and a very large business indeed was done in these instruments, especially Organs.    Being the principal sheet music dealers in this section, besides having quite a large list of their own publication, they built up a trade in this line which has steadily increased and to-day is surpassed by but few concerns outside of the metropolis.  In February 1876, Mr. Demarest retired from the firm, since which time the business has been conducted under the name of O. S. Burr & Co.  In August 1877 they removed to 91 Water St. in the centennial building.  In April 1878 Mr. Burr became interested in the Wilcox & White Organ Co., of West Meriden, Conn., and for want of time he was compelled to relinquish the Middletown store.  The Newburgh business was placed under management of Mr. David W. Jagger, their bookkeeper, and by concentrating efforts at this point, they have greatly increased their business.  In addition to representing the manufactures previously mentioned, they are now general agents for the Hudson River counties, of the Wilcox & White organ.  O. S. B., & Co., are pleased at all times to have friends use their rooms as headquarters while in the city.  Address in New York, 56 East 14th St.
