General Editorial Review
Swinton, Shimer & Co. Foundry and Hardware.

The foundry of Messrs Swinton, Shimer & Co. has been in successful operation for upward of ten years.  It is located and 41 Front street, Port Jervis.  Their business consists of the manufacture of stoves and hardware, sinks, window caps and sills, and castings in general, copper, tin and sheet iron work. Their foundry is in rear of their large hardware establishment, where may be found a general assortment of hardware, iron, nails, stoves, agricultural implements, cutlery, etc.  The firm is composed of John D. Swinton, David L. Swinton and Frank Shimer, who are all known as enterprising, reliable men.  The fact that within the first six years of their business they were required to enlarge their establishment to supply the demand, is sufficient guarantee that their methods of business are a success, and speaks more to their credit, than any written recommend.  Their card will be found elsewhere in this work, advertising their business and the goods they deal in.

 Geo. E. Cook, Druggist.

This gentleman's drug store is located upon the corner of Pike and Ball streets, where he has one of the best arranged and most commodious stores to be seen in Orange County.  Geo. Cook is a thoroughly live business man, and does a large wholesale and retail trade in drugs medicines and chemicals, paints, oil, varnishes, glass, etc., stationery, toilet articles, wines and liquors.  To conduct such a business successfully requires a man of tact, energy, and perseverance together with an unlimited amount of patience and good nature.  All these Mr. Cook possesses in abundance and they have enabled him to build up the leading drug trade of Port Jervis, and win a host of friends.

St. John & Malven, Foundry and Machine Shop.

This well known firm long ago impressed the public with a knowledge of their reliability and standing.  The business was purchased upward of twenty one years ago by the present firm, the former proprietors having been Messrs Malven & Gordon, hardware merchants, who are now located upon the cor. of Sussex and Front streets, Mr. Geo. Malven being a member of both firms.  The foundry is in the same building with the hardware establishment.  They manufacture stoves, plows, agricultural implements, and general castings.  There is no firm in Port Jervis better known than that of St. John & Malven, Mr. St John having been much in public life, and his name has been associated with nearly all the public improvements of the village.

 B. Goodale, Furniture, Carpets, etc.

Prominent among the business men of Orange County stands the name of Augustus B. Goodale, of Port Jervis, engaged in the manufacture of furniture and the sale of the same, together with carpets and oil cloths.  His factory is located upon the triangle formed by Fowler and Front streets and Jersey Avenue, and occupies the eastern end of the same, using more than half of the entire block.  His salesrooms are upon the corner of Pike street and Orange Square, being a large three story brick building with a basement.  The corner room upon the first floor is used for the Port Jervis Postoffice, being expressly fitted up for this purpose, Mr. Goodale having been postmaster.  The basement is used as storeroom for carpets, the remainder of the first floor is used for retailing carpets and furniture, the second floor being devoted entirely to the display of handsome parlor suits, the upper floor being used for storage of furniture.  The different stories are accessible both by stairways and by an elevator, the latter serving a double purpose, that of carrying passengers and transfer of goods.  Mr. Goodale is the largest furniture and carpet dealer of Port Jervis, and one of the leading citizens of the village.

Fowler House, T. F. Grandin, Propr.

This fine hotel is situated upon Fowler street between Front st. and Jersey Ave., occuping the entire front of the block, it has recently been entirely refitted and refurnished in first class style with the object of making it a resort for summer boarders, and visitors to this part of the Delaware and Neversink valleys; the house is of brick four stories and basement, surmounted with an observatory from which the most delightful views are obtained.  The parlors, sitting-room and reading room of the house are finely furnished, are large commodious apartments, which with the wide halls and broad verandahs make the house especially inviting.  The sleeping apartments are large airy rooms, furnished similarly upon the different floors, and supplied with all modern conveniences.  The house is a three minutes ride from the Erie Depot, to which carriages run to meet all trains. There is a good billiard parlor attached to the house, and livery stables furnishing accommodations to the guests for driving.  The house is conducted by Mr. T. F. Grandin, who took charge in 1878.  Mrs. Grandin personally superintends the wants of her lady guests, and being herself a lady of culture and refinement, this is guarantee that they are never neglected. Mr. Grandin understands fully how to render the duties of “mine host," in an acceptable manner; we speak understandingly upon this point for we have tried the same and know whereof we speak, and we assure the public there are few better kept hotels in this state than is the Fowler House of Port Jervis.

 J. B. Hornbeck, Tobacconist.

We take pleasure in mentioning Mr. Hornbeck as we are personally acquainted with him and know him to be a reliable man, and to deal in first class articles in his line of trade.  He is located at No. 4 Pike street, and deals both wholesale and retail in tobacco, and cigars and smokers articles in general.  His motto is, "to furnish a prime article, that shall give entire satisfaction for the least money,” and that he does this, hardly a user of the “weed” will deny.  If you chance to be a lover of the fragrant weed, and wish for something a little nicer than any you ever tried before, something that will make you forgive every body, and love the remainder, in short something that will make you feel like a father to the fatherless, and a widow to the widowless, -well, go to J. B. Hornbeck's and get your tobacco, No. Pike street, Port Jervis.

 T. J. Gray, Jeweler.

Mr. T. J. Gray was formerly located at Walden, but removed to Port Jervis, and commenced business, since which time he has been eminently successful.  He deals in clocks and watches, silver ware, spectacles and jewelry, making a specialty of silver ware and also of cleaning fine watches.  All work warranted and satisfaction given.  Mr. Chas. B. Gray is with him, a gentleman well known in Port Jervis.  In a community embracing so many railroad men, correct time is imperative.  We recommend to those when wishing to purchase a time-piece or possessing one requiring repairs, to call upon T. J. Gray 126 Pike St., as his work is thoroughly reliable, and his prices low.

 Hon. F. R. Brodhead, Lumber & Coal.

Mr. Brodhead has been a resident of Port Jervis for over a quarter of a century, he formerly conducted the grocery business here, but for the past ten years has been engaged in coal and lumber business, his yard is located at No. 40 Jersey ave.  Mr. Brodhead has won a reputation as a reliable business man, having been much in public life, and is at present the Democratic member for Assembly from this district.  Mr. Brodheads election is clue to his well known sterling intregrity, and business capacity.  Could such men be oftener elected to fill our public offices, the burdens our tax-payers now labor under would soon materially lighten.
