Town of Montgomery
List of Persons living in Montgomery
THE village of Montgomery was incorporated by special act Feb. 17, 1810. It lies in the valley of the Wallkill, in the town of Montgomery, on the Montgomery & Wallkill Valley Railroad, thirty four miles distant from Kingston, seventy miles from Jersey City, and nearly twelve miles west of Newburgh in an air line. The first election in the village was held March 6, 1810. The town was among the first settled in the county. The first patent was granted to Henry Hileman in 1709, and a settlement was soon after made where the present village now stands. A Protestant Dutch Reformed church was formed here in 1632. The Wallkill River flows through the village, furnishing a good water power there is a large paper mill, manufacturing manilla wrapping paper, and a large woolen mill further down the stream.

SCHOOLS.
Montgomery Academy is one of the oldest schools in the county. and was founded some time about 1800, principally through the efforts of Mr. John Miller; the present principal is Prof. Benj. C. Nevins, and he has one assistant. The trustees are Dr. C. M. Crawford, J. M. Wilkins, D. M. Dade, Rev. F. S. Schenck, and Rev. James Forsyth. Montgomery Union School. Prof. D. C. Carvey, principal, assisted by Miss C. Sears.

FIRE DEPARTMENT.
The Fire Department was organized the 7th of March, 1810. The present department consists of Wallkill Hook & Ladder Company, and Wailkill Engine & Hose Company. The department is under the control of five Fire Wardens.
