Obituaries from Orange County
Mrs. Dolly Watkins
from The Whig Press
January 21, 1852
The following obituary notice was communicated to the Goshen Republican:
Died Dec. 18--in Hamptonburgh, in the 96th year of her age, Mrs. Dolly Watkins, relict of the late Hezekiah Watkins of that town, and sister of Joshua Brown, Esq., dec.
It is fit, when the aged die, that something more than a simple record of their departure be published. The subject of the above notice was the immediate maternal ancestor of the Watkins family of Hamptonburgh. For almost seventy years she has been a widow, and has survived her four children, all but one of whom left families to mourn their loss. Like the aged oak, which the storms and winds of well nigh a century have bereft of first one limb and then another, yet still survives, she has remained among us till at last inexorable Time has claimed her as his victim. The deceased never made a profession of religion, yet preserving in a remarkable degree her physical and mental faculties, she left bright evidence that "for her to die was gain." It is worthy of mention, that some of her descendents of the fourth generation followed her remains ot the tomb.
