Town of Walden

THE Village of Walden was incorporated in 1851, and reincorporated under a special act in 1871. It lies in the town of Montgomery, a little east of north; from the village of Goshen distant sixteen miles. It is twelve miles west from Newburgh City and lies upon the Wailkill River, which here pours over the rocks in cascades, some thirty feet, furnishing a water power upon which are located the New York Knife Company’s factory, Perry, Bartow & Wheeler’s Woolen Mills and the Walden Knife Factory. The village is on the Montgomery & Wallkill Valley R. R. Besides the manufacturing establishments just mentioned, the extensive foundry and machine shops of Rider, Wooster & Co., and the Walden Steam Flouring Mills are located here. There are two banks in the village, the Walden National Bank, chartered March 5, 1877, capital $50,000, John C. Scofield pres., Geo. W. Stoddard vice pres., W. G. Rutherford, cashier and the Walden Savings Bank, incorporated April 25th, 1872, Geo. Weller 1st vice pres., Thos. J. Bradley 2d vice pres., Geo. W. Stoddard sec.

FIRE DEPARTMENT.
The Fire Department consists of a Steam Fire Engine Company, and one Hose Company, Enterprise Steamer Co., organized 1872, Chief Engineer, J. C. Scofield. Eagle Hose Co., organized 1877, besides the New York Knife Co. and Perry, Bartow & Wheelers Woolen Mills have each a private engine. Fire Department supplied with water by means of wells and cisterns, and the Wallkill River.
